The safest way to move data to a CMF by Nothing phone is to start the CMF phone’s first-time setup, choose the Android copy option, and transfer directly from the old phone by cable or wireless connection. Back up the old phone first, review the categories before copying, restore WhatsApp separately, and verify important content before erasing the old device.
What you need before starting
These instructions use the general Android-to-Nothing setup method. Nothing publishes guidance for Nothing phones as a product family rather than for every CMF model, and Android setup screens can differ by model and Android version. The wording on your CMF phone may therefore be slightly different, but the sequence is usually the same: prepare both phones, begin setup on the new phone, connect the devices, choose what to copy, and check the result.

- Both phones: Charge the old Android phone and the CMF phone. Nothing recommends starting with both phones fully charged. Keep them near a reliable Wi-Fi connection if possible.
- Access to the old phone: You must be able to unlock it with its PIN, pattern, password or other screen lock when the transfer asks for approval.
- Your Google Account: Have the email address, password and any verification method ready. The account helps the new phone download apps and restore backed-up content.
- Connectivity: Connect the CMF phone to Wi-Fi or mobile data during setup. Wireless transfer also requires the phones to follow the pairing instructions shown on screen.
- A cable only if you choose wired transfer: The cable must fit both phones and carry data, not merely charge. Depending on the ports, you may also need an adapter. Wireless transfer is an official alternative when the setup wizard offers it.
Before connecting anything, make a current backup on the old phone. A direct copy is useful, but Google warns that some app data, non-Google accounts, contacts and calendars synchronized through other services, ringtones and certain settings may not be included automatically. A backup gives you another recovery path if a category is missing.

Start the CMF phone’s setup
- Turn on the CMF by Nothing phone and select your language.
- Insert a SIM card if you plan to activate cellular service during setup, then connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data when prompted.
- Continue through the setup wizard until it asks whether you want to set up the phone using another device or copy apps and data.
- Choose the option for an Android phone. The exact label can vary, so look for wording about copying apps, data or information from an old device.
- Keep the old phone unlocked and close by. The CMF phone may display a QR code to scan, or it may ask you to connect the phones with a cable. Follow the method shown by your particular model.
Transfer is normally initiated during initial setup. If you skip the copy screen, some phones later show a “Finish setting up” or copy-data option, but the availability and menu path depend on the CMF model and Android version. Do not factory-reset the old phone merely because you cannot find a post-setup shortcut; use the backup-restore route described below if necessary.

Choose wired or wireless transfer
Google’s Android transfer instructions document both cable and wireless methods and state: “Both methods support the same data.” The practical difference is how the phones connect and how much hardware you need.
| Method | What you need | How it starts | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wired | A compatible data cable for both phones; an adapter may be needed. | Connect the phones when the CMF setup wizard requests a cable, then approve the connection on the old phone. | Useful when both phones are nearby and you already have a suitable cable. | A charging-only cable or an incorrect connector will not work. Do not buy a cable unless wireless transfer is unavailable or you prefer a wired connection. |
| Wireless | Both phones powered on, unlocked and following the on-screen pairing process; Wi-Fi or mobile data as requested. | Select the wireless option in the CMF setup flow and complete the pairing prompts on both phones. One version of Nothing’s guidance uses a QR-code scan. | Convenient when you do not have a cable or the phones use different connectors. | Pairing screens and availability vary by device. Keep the phones close and powered until copying finishes. |
| Google Account backup restore | A backup made from the old phone and access to the same Google Account. | During setup, sign in and choose an available backup when the CMF phone offers restore. | A fallback when the old phone is lost, damaged or unavailable. | This is not a live device-to-device copy. What restores depends on the backup, phone model and Android versions. |
For a cable transfer, connect only when the setup wizard asks. Approve any permission or trust prompt on the old phone. If the cable does not trigger a prompt, unlock both devices, disconnect and reconnect it, try another known data cable, and check whether an adapter is seated firmly. If the wizard offers wireless transfer, you can switch to it rather than troubleshooting a connector.
Review what will be copied
After the phones connect, the CMF phone normally displays categories or an estimate of the content it can move. Read this screen instead of accepting every category automatically. Deselect anything you intentionally want to leave on the old phone, then choose the copy or transfer button.

| Data type | What the official guidance establishes | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Text messages | Nothing’s general Android-to-Nothing instructions list texts as transferable in a cable copy. | Open the messaging app on the CMF phone after setup and check recent and older conversations. |
| Contacts | Contacts can be included, but Google warns that contacts synchronized through services other than the Google Account may not copy through the standard process. | Check both Google-synced and locally stored contacts. Export or sync contacts through their original service if a group is missing. |
| Calendar entries | Calendar data is listed by Nothing, while Google cautions that calendars synced to non-Google services may not transfer. | Open each calendar account on the new phone and confirm that the relevant calendars are enabled. |
| Photos and videos | Nothing lists videos among the content included in its general cable-transfer guidance. | Check the gallery or photo app and any cloud-photo account separately. Do not assume a cloud library has downloaded locally just because you signed in. |
| Music | Music is included in Nothing’s general list of cable-transfer content. | Confirm locally stored files and sign in again to any music service that manages its own library. |
| Apps | Apps may be copied or downloaded through the Google Account. Nothing says apps that do not transfer can be downloaded from Google Play. | Review the app list after setup and reinstall missing apps from Google Play. App data still depends on whether each app supports Android backup. |
| Ringtones and settings | Google says ringtones and some phone settings may not be copied by the standard process. | Re-select your ringtone, notification sounds, wallpaper, permissions and other preferences manually. |
| Accounts other than Google | Google warns that data for accounts other than Google Accounts may not be included. | Sign in to work, school, email, cloud-storage and social accounts individually, using each service’s own recovery method. |
When you are satisfied with the categories, tap the on-screen copy button and leave both phones alone. Nothing says a transfer can take from a few minutes to over an hour, depending on the amount of data. A large photo or video library, a slow wireless connection or many apps can extend the wait.
Restore WhatsApp separately
Do not treat WhatsApp chats as guaranteed contents of the general phone copy. Google’s Android guidance describes WhatsApp as a separate backup-and-restore process.
- On the old phone, open WhatsApp and turn on its chat backup before starting the move. Confirm that the backup completes successfully.
- Complete the CMF phone’s setup and sign in with the Google Account used for the WhatsApp backup.
- Install or open WhatsApp on the CMF phone and verify the same phone number when requested.
- When WhatsApp detects the cloud backup, choose the restore option and wait for chats and media to finish restoring.
If no backup is detected, check that the new phone uses the same Google Account and phone number as the old installation, then confirm that the old phone’s backup actually finished. A successful general Android transfer does not replace this WhatsApp cloud-restore step.

Check the CMF phone before erasing the old one
Use the new phone for a deliberate verification pass. Google advises clearing the old device only after confirming that the data copied.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Unlock the CMF phone and open the Contacts app. Search for several contacts you use regularly, including one that may have been stored locally rather than in Google.
- Open Messages and inspect recent conversations, older threads and any media attachments that matter.
- Open the gallery or photo app and check representative photos and videos from different dates. Verify that cloud services are signed in and syncing if you rely on them.
- Open Calendar and switch through each account or calendar that you used on the old phone.
- Launch your essential apps, sign in where necessary and confirm that app-specific data is present. Apps that do not use Android backup may require their own export or sign-in process.
- Open WhatsApp and confirm that the expected chats and media are visible after its separate restore.
- Check downloaded files, documents, music, alarms, ringtones, wallpaper, accessibility settings and two-factor-authentication apps.
- Make a test call, send a text and confirm mobile data, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work with the accessories you depend on.
Keep the old phone powered and untouched until these checks are complete. If something is missing, use the old device or its service-specific export before wiping it. A factory reset permanently removes local data that has not been copied elsewhere.
If the old Android phone is unavailable
When the old phone is lost, damaged or cannot be unlocked, direct cable or wireless transfer is not possible. During CMF setup, sign in to the Google Account associated with the old phone and select an available backup when the restore screen appears.

Google notes that backup and restore behavior varies by phone and Android version. A backup made on a newer Android version cannot be restored to an older Android version. If the CMF phone is running an older version than the old device, the result may be incomplete. Install available system updates before setup when the phone allows it, but do not assume an update will recover data that was never included in the backup.
Only data present in the backup can be restored this way. Content belonging to non-Google accounts, services that maintain their own synchronization, apps without Android backup support, ringtones and some settings may still require separate recovery. Contact the relevant service or use its web account if the data was synchronized outside the phone backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTroubleshoot common transfer problems
The CMF phone does not show the copy option
Continue through the initial setup screens rather than jumping directly to the home screen. The copy prompt normally appears during first-time setup. If you already completed setup, look for a device-specific “Finish setting up” or copy-data path, but do not expect every CMF model to expose the same menu. If no such path exists, reset the CMF phone only after confirming that it contains no new data, then repeat setup, or restore from a Google Account backup instead.

The cable is connected but nothing happens
- Unlock the old phone and accept any permission or connection prompt.
- Confirm that the cable fits both ports and supports data transfer.
- Reseat or replace the adapter if one is being used.
- Disconnect and reconnect only when the setup wizard is waiting for the cable.
- Switch to wireless transfer if the CMF setup offers it.
Wireless pairing fails
Keep the phones close, charged and unlocked. Re-read the pairing instructions on both displays and repeat the QR-code or confirmation step if one is shown. Use a stable Wi-Fi connection and avoid leaving the setup screen while the devices are pairing. If pairing remains unavailable, a compatible wired data cable is the alternative.
Some apps or data are missing
Compare the missing item with the transfer categories you selected. Reinstall missing apps from Google Play, then sign in to each app. If an app does not use Android backup, its data may not have been included. Check whether the service provides its own cloud restore, export or account synchronization. Apply the same approach to non-Google contacts and calendars, ringtones and settings.
The transfer appears stuck
Large transfers can take over an hour. Keep both phones connected to power if necessary and do not erase the old phone while the process is still running. If the progress screen stops responding for an extended period, note which categories were selected, restart the setup only after confirming the old phone still has the data, and try the other transfer method or a smaller category selection.

A safe sequence for handing off the old phone
- Finish the verification checklist on the CMF phone.
- Complete separate restores for WhatsApp and any other service that has its own backup.
- Confirm that authenticator, banking, work and password-manager access has been transferred before removing accounts from the old phone.
- Move or export any remaining local files that did not copy.
- Sign out of accounts on the old phone and remove its SIM or memory card if you are keeping them.
- Only then perform a factory reset using the old phone’s own settings and follow its erase confirmation screens.
This order preserves a recovery device while you are still discovering omissions. The most important decision is not whether you used a cable or wireless transfer; it is whether you verified the information you cannot easily recreate before erasing the source phone.
