The simplest way to move data to an iPhone 17 is Apple’s Move to iOS process during the iPhone’s first setup. On the iPhone, choose Transfer Your Apps & Data, tap From Android, then use the Move to iOS app on Android. Enter the temporary code shown on the iPhone, select what to copy, and leave both phones powered and close together until the transfer finishes. If both phones have USB-C, a data-capable USB-C cable is the faster connection Apple describes.
If the iPhone 17 has already finished setup, Move to iOS is no longer available from the normal setup screens. You must either erase the iPhone and repeat setup or move content manually.

What you need before starting
Move to iOS works best when you prepare both phones first. The transfer can include a large photo library, videos, messages and app data, so a few minutes of preparation can prevent an incomplete migration.

- Turn on Wi-Fi on the Android phone. The wireless Move to iOS process uses a direct wireless connection created during setup.
- Check iPhone storage. Compare the Android phone’s used storage, including content on a Micro SD card that you intend to move, with the iPhone 17’s available capacity. If the selected content will not fit, remove or archive files before trying again.
- Update Chrome on Android if bookmarks matter. Move to iOS can transfer web bookmarks, and an up-to-date Chrome installation avoids preventable compatibility problems.
- Have a USB-C data cable ready. If both phones use USB-C, a cable that supports data—not only charging—can provide a faster direct connection.
- Keep account and carrier details available. You may need your Apple Account, Android account, carrier login, eSIM verification or other security checks after the copy completes.
Do not erase or trade in the Android phone until you have checked the iPhone 17. The old phone is your fallback if a category did not transfer or a carrier activation needs additional information.

Choose a transfer method

For a new iPhone 17, use the USB-C method when both devices support it and the cable is suitable for data. Otherwise, the wireless method is the normal choice.
Transfer data during first-time iPhone 17 setup
- Start the iPhone 17. Turn it on and place it near the Android phone. Begin the normal iPhone setup.
- Open the data-transfer screen. Continue until you reach Transfer Your Apps & Data, then tap From Android. Do not choose a different setup path if you want Move to iOS.
- Install Move to iOS on Android. Open the app if it is already installed. If it is not, tap the QR-code button shown on the iPhone to open its Google Play listing, then install and launch it.
- Accept the setup prompts. In Move to iOS, tap Continue, read and accept the terms, and grant the permissions the app requests. These permissions allow it to read the categories you choose to migrate.
- Get the temporary code. The iPhone displays a one-time code. Enter that code in Move to iOS on the Android phone. This pairs the devices for the transfer; it is not your Apple Account password.
- Connect the phones. For wireless transfer, follow the on-screen connection instructions and keep Wi-Fi enabled. For a wired transfer, connect the USB-C cable before starting and respond to any Android USB prompt so the connection is configured for data.
- Select the content. Choose the categories you want to copy. The amount selected affects the duration and the storage required on the iPhone.
- Start and leave the process alone. Tap the control to begin the transfer. Keep the phones close together, connected to power and on their respective transfer screens. Do not switch to other apps, unplug the cable or restart either phone.
- Wait for the iPhone progress bar. Apple says the transfer can take a while, depending on how much content is moved. There is no official universal time or guaranteed speed because a small contacts-only move and a large video library are very different jobs.
- Finish iPhone setup. When the iPhone indicates that the transfer is complete, continue through the remaining setup screens. The Android phone may still show its own completion message; wait for both devices to finish before disconnecting.
- Download matched apps. Some free apps with an App Store equivalent can be matched during migration. Complete any remaining downloads from the App Store after setup and sign in to each service as required.
What Move to iOS can copy
The automatic process is broad, but “everything” does not mean a byte-for-byte clone of an Android phone. Apple lists the following supported categories:

| Mail accounts | Supported account information can be brought over. You may still be asked to authenticate again. |
| WhatsApp messages and media | Supported WhatsApp conversations and associated media are included when selected. Open WhatsApp on the iPhone afterward and complete its sign-in or activation prompts. |

Content that needs a separate plan
Apple specifically says that music, books and PDFs must be moved manually. Apps without a matching App Store version also require separate installation, an alternative app or manual handling of their data. A subscription service may restore its content after you install the iPhone version and sign in, but that is different from copying the Android app itself.
USB-C versus wireless transfer
Why use USB-C
Apple says you can directly connect an Android device and iPhone with USB-C for a faster transfer, and its iPhone 17 guidance likewise recommends a USB-C cable to boost transfer speed. The cable must support data. A charge-only cable will not provide the expected connection.

Connect the phones before starting the transfer or when the setup screen requests it. If Android displays a USB-use prompt, choose the data or file-transfer option appropriate to the prompt, then return to Move to iOS. If the iPhone does not detect the connection, disconnect, unlock both phones, reconnect firmly and try another known data cable.
When wireless is the better choice
Wireless Move to iOS avoids cable compatibility problems and is sufficient for many migrations. Turn on Wi-Fi, keep both devices close and connect both to power. Because Apple does not publish a guaranteed duration, do not schedule the migration around a precise number of minutes. A large collection of high-resolution videos can take substantially longer than contacts and messages alone.
Move your phone number and eSIM
During the move, Apple may activate the phone number and physical SIM or eSIM, depending on the carrier and the devices involved. In some cases, the iPhone sends you to the carrier’s website to complete activation.

- Keep the carrier account username, password and verification method available.
- Do not assume that transferring personal data automatically completes every carrier requirement.
- Leave the Android phone available until you can place a call, send a text and use cellular data on the iPhone 17.
- If the carrier asks for a QR code, transfer PIN or identity check, complete that step through the carrier’s official process.
Carrier and regional requirements vary, so an eSIM that works on one Android-to-iPhone move may require extra steps on another. If activation remains pending, contact the carrier before deleting the eSIM or wiping the Android phone.

If the iPhone 17 is already set up
Move to iOS is part of the iPhone’s initial setup. Apple’s supported way to use it after setup is to erase the iPhone and begin again.
Option 1: Erase and use Move to iOS
This gives you the full automated workflow, but erasing removes data currently stored on the iPhone. Make an iPhone backup first if there is anything you need to preserve, then open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. After the restart, follow the setup steps in this article and choose From Android.
Do not choose this option casually: any iPhone photos, messages, files, accounts or settings created since setup will be removed unless they are backed up or otherwise preserved.
Option 2: Keep the setup and move content manually
If erasing is unacceptable, leave the iPhone as it is and handle each category separately. Add the same mail, calendar and contact accounts on the iPhone, copy photos and videos through the storage or cloud service where they already live, install iPhone versions of your apps from the App Store, and move music, books and PDFs using the service or computer workflow that stores those files. For WhatsApp, use the supported in-app migration or restore path shown by WhatsApp on the two phones rather than assuming a generic file copy will recreate conversations.

Manual migration takes longer because there is no single progress bar for all categories. Keep a checklist of contacts, photos, messages, WhatsApp media, calendars and call history, then verify each one before retiring the Android phone.

The cable connection shows an Android USB prompt
Unlock Android and set the USB connection to a data or file-transfer mode when prompted. Then return to Move to iOS and restart the connection if necessary. A charge-only cable, loose connector or incompatible adapter can prevent the phones from communicating.
The transfer stops or appears frozen
- Keep both phones on power and close together.
- Do not open another app, answer a call or switch away from the transfer screen.
- Check that Wi-Fi remains enabled for a wireless move.
- For a wired move, reseat the cable only if the process has clearly stopped and the on-screen instructions tell you to retry; repeatedly unplugging during an active transfer can leave the migration incomplete.
- Restart the process if it cannot continue, selecting the same categories again.
Only some data arrived
Check which categories were selected and compare the iPhone’s available storage with the Android phone’s content, including the Micro SD card. If the iPhone ran out of space or the result is incomplete, Apple recommends checking storage and, when necessary, erasing the iPhone and repeating the transfer with enough capacity or fewer selected files.
The iPhone has no room
Stop before deleting the Android originals. Free space on the iPhone, reduce the selection or move large videos and other files manually after setup. If the automatic transfer cannot complete, erase and repeat only after you have confirmed that the revised selection will fit.

The QR option or Move to iOS app is unavailable
Use the normal Google Play installation path if the QR button is absent. The app-free QR pairing option is limited to compatible Android 17-or-later devices and compatible iOS or iPadOS versions, and the phone manufacturer determines whether it is supported. If your devices do not qualify, use the standard Move to iOS app.
eSIM activation does not finish
Complete any carrier website or verification step shown during setup. Confirm that the iPhone can connect to Wi-Fi, keep your carrier credentials ready and test calling, texting and cellular data. Carrier support is the correct escalation point when the account or regional requirements block activation.
Verify the iPhone before wiping Android
Use the following acceptance check while the Android phone is still available:

- Open Messages and confirm that important SMS history is present.
- Launch WhatsApp, complete its prompts and check both conversations and media.
- Open Calendar and confirm upcoming appointments and recurring events.
- Check call history, Voice Memos, files, folders and web bookmarks that matter to you.
- Place a call, send a text and test cellular data after SIM or eSIM activation.
- Install or sign in to the apps you use most, especially banking, authentication and messaging apps.
Only after these checks pass should you reset, sell or trade in the Android phone.
When in-person setup makes sense
If the phones cannot establish a connection, the iPhone lacks sufficient storage, or carrier activation is blocking the move, an Apple Store can perform setup assistance. Apple says its store staff can activate a plan and transfer data so you leave with the iPhone running. Bring both phones, charging accessories, account credentials and any carrier verification information.
