Use Apple Quick Start when your old iPhone is available. Update both phones, connect the old phone to Wi‑Fi, turn on Bluetooth, place the devices together, authenticate the pairing and choose either a direct transfer or an iCloud download. Keep both iPhones powered until the chosen process finishes. If the old iPhone is lost, damaged or already erased, restore an iCloud or computer backup instead.

iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide, so there is no physical SIM to remove. During setup, follow the cellular-transfer prompt or use your carrier’s activation process. Do not erase the old iPhone until calls, texts and mobile data work on Duo. Apple lists iPhone Duo availability from October 23, 2026; setup screens and carrier requirements can vary by country and software version.

Choose the right transfer method

Your best route depends mainly on whether the old iPhone still works and how quickly you need to use Duo.

Old iPhone is working and beside you Quick Start direct transfer Data moves from the old phone to Duo during setup. Both phones remain occupied until the transfer completes, as Apple notes in its Quick Start guidance.
You want to start using Duo sooner Quick Start with iCloud download Initial setup completes first; apps and data continue downloading in the background. Full availability depends on network speed and the amount of data.
Old iPhone cannot participate but a recent backup exists Restore an iCloud backup Duo is rebuilt from the selected cloud backup. You can restore only what was included in that backup.
You have a Mac or PC backup Finder, Apple Devices or iTunes restore Duo is restored from the computer backup. You need access to the computer and the backup used to create it.
Wireless transfer is impractical Wired transfer with a USB-C data cable The phones communicate over a physical cable during migration. The cable must support data; a charge-only cable will not provide the required connection.

Apple’s migration overview (December 11, 2025) lists iCloud and computer restoration as supported fallbacks. Its Quick Start article (published September 17, 2026) describes both direct transfer and downloading from iCloud.

  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Prepare both iPhones before setup

A few minutes of preparation prevents most failed transfers and cellular-activation surprises.

  • Make a fresh backup of the old iPhone. Apple’s checklist specifically says to make sure you have a backup before moving to a new device. A current backup gives you a recovery point if setup is interrupted.
  • Have your Apple Account password ready. You may need it to authenticate Quick Start, restore purchases and complete account services.
  • Update both iPhones if possible. Install available iOS updates while the old phone is still usable. If Duo has already been updated, bring the old phone as close to the same release as practical.
  • Charge both devices and keep them connected to power. A transfer can take a long time when the old phone contains many photos, videos or apps.
  • Check eSIM support with your carrier. Keep the carrier account login, account PIN or other verification details available. Support for automatic line transfer differs by carrier and country.
  • Locate a compatible USB-C data cable. Duo has a USB-C connector and Apple includes a 1 m USB-C charge cable. Confirm that any cable you plan to use supports data, not only charging.

Do not trade in, erase or reset the old iPhone yet. You may need it to approve an account sign-in, retrieve an authentication code or repeat the transfer.

Transfer directly with Quick Start

Quick Start is the default choice when the old iPhone is present, unlocked and functioning. It transfers the device configuration while the two phones are together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Put the old iPhone in the correct state

  1. Connect the old iPhone to Wi‑Fi.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth in Settings > Bluetooth.
  3. Unlock the old iPhone and leave it on the Home Screen.
  4. Connect it to power if the battery is not nearly full.

Apple’s exact requirement is that the current device be connected to Wi‑Fi with Bluetooth turned on. If Bluetooth is disabled, Quick Start may not display the pairing card.

2. Start Duo beside the old phone

  1. Turn on iPhone Duo and place it next to the old iPhone.
  2. Wait for the Quick Start prompt to appear on the old phone.
  3. Tap the option to set up the new iPhone and follow the onscreen pairing instructions.
  4. When Duo shows an animation, use the old iPhone’s camera to scan it if prompted.
  5. Enter the old iPhone’s passcode on Duo when requested.

Keep the devices close together. Moving one phone away during authentication or the initial connection can interrupt the process.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

3. Connect Duo and choose direct transfer

  1. Connect Duo to Wi‑Fi, or to its mobile network when the setup screen offers that route.
  2. Complete the requested Touch ID setup.
  3. When asked how to move your information, choose the option to transfer directly from the previous iPhone.
  4. Approve Apple Account and security prompts as they appear.

Direct transfer keeps both phones busy. Apple states that you must wait for the transfer to finish on both devices before using them. Leave the phones close together, plugged in and undisturbed until Duo reaches the end of migration.

What direct transfer brings across

Quick Start is intended to move your device data, settings and app arrangement rather than merely copy a few files. Photos, messages, contacts and many system preferences are therefore available on Duo after migration, subject to what was stored on the old phone and what can be redownloaded from Apple’s services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume every app remains signed in. Banking, password-management, work-security and carrier apps can require a fresh login, two-factor approval or identity check. Some apps may appear on the Home Screen while their content continues downloading.

Use the iCloud download option when you need the phone sooner

Quick Start can offer an iCloud-based choice instead of keeping the two iPhones occupied for a direct copy. Select the iCloud download option when the old phone is inconvenient to keep connected, when you need to begin using Duo quickly or when a direct device link is unreliable.

  1. Start Quick Start with the old iPhone beside Duo.
  2. Authenticate the pairing and connect Duo to Wi‑Fi.
  3. At the transfer-choice screen, select the option to download from iCloud.
  4. Finish the remaining setup prompts and leave Duo on reliable Wi‑Fi and power.

Apple says that, with an iCloud download, apps and data download in the background so you can start using the new device straight away. That convenience means setup completion is not the same as complete restoration: large photo libraries, app packages and other data may continue arriving after you reach the Home Screen.

Download time depends on the network and the amount of data. Avoid judging the process by the first few minutes of setup. Keep Duo connected to power and Wi‑Fi, and check the Home Screen or App Store download indicators later.

Transfer over USB-C when wireless migration is unsuitable

A wired route can be useful when Wi‑Fi is slow, congested or unavailable. Apple identifies wired transfer as an alternative to wireless migration. Use a USB-C cable that carries data between the old iPhone and Duo; a cable designed only for charging will not establish a migration connection.

Before connecting the cable

  • Use a cable with the correct connector for each phone. Duo uses USB-C; the old iPhone may use a different connector depending on its model.
  • Check the cable packaging or manufacturer specification for data-transfer support.
  • Keep both phones powered where possible. If the cable is also supplying power, make sure neither device is losing charge during the process.
  • Begin setup on Duo and follow the transfer instructions until Apple asks for the wired connection, rather than plugging in at a random setup screen.

Apple’s current specifications list a USB-C connector on Duo and a 1 m USB-C charge cable in the box. The included cable’s stated purpose is charging; verify its data capability before relying on it for migration.

Restore from an iCloud backup when the old iPhone is unavailable

If the old iPhone is missing, broken, locked out or already erased, choose restoration from an iCloud backup during Duo setup.

  1. Turn on Duo and proceed through language, region and network setup.
  2. At the data-transfer screen, choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup.
  3. Sign in with the Apple Account used to create the backup.
  4. Review the backup dates and sizes, then select the most recent suitable backup.
  5. Keep Duo connected to Wi‑Fi and power while the restoration runs and subsequent downloads continue.

The result reflects the selected backup, not necessarily the exact state of the missing phone at the moment it disappeared. Anything created after that backup may need to be recovered from another service or recreated. Apple says new-device buyers may be eligible for temporary iCloud storage, which can help when the old phone does not have enough available cloud space for a fresh backup.

Restore a Finder, Apple Devices or iTunes backup

A computer backup is another supported fallback. Apple lists Finder on Mac, Apple Devices on Windows and iTunes on older Windows setups as restoration tools.

  1. Open the tool that created the backup: Finder, Apple Devices or iTunes.
  2. Connect Duo to the computer with a compatible USB cable.
  3. Complete the trust and passcode prompts on Duo if they appear.
  4. Choose the command to restore the iPhone from a backup.
  5. Select the intended backup by date and complete the restore.
  6. Leave Duo connected until the tool reports completion, then allow apps and cloud content to finish downloading over Wi‑Fi.

Choose the backup deliberately. A computer may contain several snapshots from different dates or devices. If you are unsure which one is current, compare its date with the last time the old iPhone was known to contain the required photos, messages and contacts.

Move your phone number and eSIM

iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide. Apple describes it as using eSIM technology and being incompatible with physical SIM cards, so there is no removable card to transfer.

During Duo setup

  1. When setup displays the cellular-transfer screen, choose the option to transfer the line from the old iPhone if your carrier supports it.
  2. Approve any verification request on the old phone.
  3. Follow the carrier-specific prompts, which may include an account password, security code or confirmation in the carrier’s app.
  4. Wait for Duo to show the line as active before treating cellular setup as complete.

Automatic transfer is not universal. Carrier rules and activation flows differ by provider and country. If the line does not move automatically, use the carrier’s approved eSIM activation process or contact carrier support for a new activation. Apple’s setup screens can also vary with the iOS version installed on each phone.

Verify service before erasing the old phone

  • Place a call from Duo and answer a call to it.
  • Send and receive a text message.
  • Turn off Wi‑Fi briefly and confirm mobile data works.
  • Check that the correct number and carrier plan appear under Settings > Cellular.

Only after these checks pass should you erase or return the old iPhone. Duo supports dual eSIM, allowing two active eSIMs, and its specifications say it can store eight or more eSIMs. Those capabilities do not remove the need for carrier approval for each line.

Check Duo after migration

A setup-complete message confirms that the migration process ended; it does not prove that every account or download is ready. Work through this checklist before wiping the old phone:

  • Photos and videos: Open the Photos app, inspect recent and older items, and check whether cloud syncing is still in progress.
  • Messages and contacts: Search for a recent conversation and several important contacts.
  • Apps: Scan all Home Screen pages and the App Library. Open essential apps and let pending downloads finish.
  • Authentication: Sign in again where requested, especially in banking, work, password and carrier apps.
  • Apple services: Confirm that iCloud, App Store purchases and other Apple Account services show the expected account.
  • Accessories and settings: Reconnect Bluetooth devices, check notifications and review privacy permissions for critical apps.
  • Cellular: Complete the call, text and mobile-data checks before erasing the old iPhone.

Troubleshoot common transfer problems

Quick Start does not appear

  • Unlock the old iPhone and return it to the Home Screen.
  • Confirm Wi‑Fi is connected and Bluetooth is on.
  • Restart both phones, place them together and try again.
  • Install available software updates, then repeat the setup.

The direct transfer is taking a long time

Large data volumes and network conditions affect the duration. Keep both phones close, plugged in and untouched. Do not cancel merely because the progress indicator pauses briefly. If the connection repeatedly fails, restart setup and choose the iCloud download route instead.

Apps are missing after setup

With an iCloud download, apps can continue arriving in the background. Keep Duo on Wi‑Fi and power, then check the App Store and Home Screen later. An app may also require a new sign-in even when its icon and data have transferred.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The eSIM will not activate

  • Confirm that the carrier supports eSIM activation for your country and plan.
  • Check the carrier account credentials and any verification code.
  • Restart Duo and retry the carrier’s approved activation flow.
  • Contact the carrier if the old line remains active or Duo reports that the transfer is unavailable.

Do not delete the old line or erase the old iPhone while the status is uncertain. Keep the old device available for carrier verification until Duo can call, text and use mobile data.

The old iPhone is unavailable

Skip Quick Start and restore the newest suitable iCloud backup, or use a Finder, Apple Devices or iTunes backup on a computer. If no usable backup exists, only information already synchronized to cloud services or other accounts can be recovered through those services.

Managed iPhones need a different process

Apple states that Quick Start cannot be used when the new device is enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business. If an organization manages Duo, follow its deployment, enrollment and backup instructions instead of attempting a personal Quick Start migration. The administrator may need to release, assign or supervise the device before your data can be restored.

Which method should you use?

  • Choose direct Quick Start when the old iPhone works, you want the closest device-to-device move and you can leave both phones together until completion.
  • Choose iCloud download when beginning to use Duo quickly matters more than having every app and file ready immediately.
  • Choose a wired transfer when you want to avoid a wireless link and have a verified USB-C data cable with the required connectors.
  • Choose iCloud or computer restoration when the old iPhone cannot participate.
  • Plan eSIM activation separately because cellular transfer depends on carrier support, not only on Apple’s setup assistant.

The safest sequence is to make a fresh backup, keep the Apple Account password and carrier credentials available, migrate with Quick Start or a backup, verify essential data and cellular service, and only then erase the old iPhone.
