For a local USB transfer, use calibre if it detects your Kindle. Amazon-purchased books can instead be delivered from your account to a registered device.
Choose the right transfer method
| What you want to do | Best route | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Send a personal EPUB, PDF, or other supported document | Amazon Send to Kindle website | Works in a Linux browser; web uploads are limited to 200 MB. Select “Add to your library” for access on other devices and apps linked to the account. Amazon’s format and upload details. |
| Send a personal document without using the website | Send to Kindle email | Use the Kindle’s assigned Send to Kindle email address, and send from an address authorized in Amazon account settings. Amazon’s Send to Kindle information. |
| Transfer and manage local files over USB | calibre | Use calibre’s “Send to device” function if Linux and calibre recognize the Kindle. Newer models may need extra troubleshooting. calibre’s device FAQ. |

Send a personal book through Amazon in Linux
- Open Amazon’s Send to Kindle website in a browser on your Linux computer and sign in.
- Upload a supported document. Amazon lists HTML/HTM, RTF, TXT, JPEG/JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP, PDF, and EPUB. The web-upload limit is 200 MB.
- Select “Add to your library” if you want the document available to download on other Kindle devices or apps linked to your account.
- Allow Amazon to process and deliver the document, then check the Kindle’s library. The Kindle needs a network connection to receive the cloud-delivered file.
Amazon also allows documents to be sent as email attachments to a Kindle’s unique Send to Kindle address. The sending email address must be authorized in the account settings. Amazon says the service is provided at no additional cost. These are cloud-delivery options: Amazon’s supported-format list describes what its service accepts, not what can necessarily be copied unchanged to the Kindle over USB.

Transfer a local file over USB with calibre
- Install calibre for Linux from calibre’s official Linux download page, then add the DRM-free book to your calibre library.
- Connect the Kindle with a USB cable that supports data transfer. Check the connector required by your particular model.
- If calibre detects the Kindle, select the book and choose “Send to device.”
- Use a format suitable for the local transfer. Do not assume a format accepted by Amazon’s cloud service can be copied raw to Kindle storage and opened.
calibre’s device integration depends on the operating system exposing the Kindle in a usable way. If calibre does not show it, check whether Linux sees the device and whether calibre is set to ignore it. calibre’s device FAQ includes a device-detection debugging tool for cases that remain unresolved.
Check the model before troubleshooting a recent Kindle
calibre specifically flags Kindle devices released in 2024 or later on Linux or macOS as cases that may require additional USB guidance. Follow the current note in calibre’s FAQ for the exact device. Amazon’s cited USB File Manager instructions describe a Mac procedure, not a Linux fix; they also note a separate application requirement for Kindle Scribe and 2024-released Kindles when transferring files by USB on Mac. The available Amazon guidance does not establish that application’s availability for Linux.
