Meta emphasizes discovery across Marketplace and Meta content; Amazon’s current assistant, Alexa for Shopping, helps customers research and act within Amazon; Shopify combines conversational search in Shop with tools that help merchants make catalogs available to AI commerce channels.
What each tool is for
Meta AI: inspiration and product discovery
Meta’s April 2026 announcement describes a shopping mode in which people can ask Meta AI to find nearby Facebook Marketplace listings alongside options from across the internet. Results can bring used and new items together with a map, and shoppers can refine them by price, style, or distance. Meta also describes using an @ mention for a brand or creator to browse public content in a product grid, and asking for ideas such as what to wear, how to style a room, or what to give as a gift. The company says the experience draws inspiration from posts, Reels, and products shared across its apps. Meta’s announcement describes these capabilities, but does not provide a complete country-by-country availability list or independent evaluation of recommendation quality.

Related Marketplace features are separate from shopping mode. In November 2025, Meta said it was testing suggested questions for seller chats based on listing and conversation details, as well as AI-generated insights for vehicle listings. These were described as tests, not universal features. Meta’s Marketplace announcement also reported more than 3.5 million listings posted per day in the United States and Canada in 2026. That is a listing-volume figure, not a count of Meta AI users.

Amazon renamed and incorporated its former Rufus assistant into Alexa for Shopping in May 2026. Amazon describes it as combining Rufus’s product expertise and customers’ Amazon shopping history with Alexa+ personalization. Its announcement said it was available to U.S. customers through the Amazon Shopping app, Amazon.com, and Echo Show devices; that announcement does not establish availability in every account or later rollout. See Amazon’s announcement for the stated scope.
#1 Best Overall
Amazon says customers can ask everyday-language questions, follow up, get personalized recommendations, track prices, compare selected products side by side—including features, prices, and reviews—and take shopping actions. The experience is centered on Amazon’s catalog and shopping history, rather than Meta’s described mix of local Marketplace listings, internet options, and public Meta content. Amazon also reported that Rufus helped more than 300 million customers research, compare, and buy products in 2025. This is Amazon’s company-reported activity figure, not an independent measure of adoption, satisfaction, or accuracy. Amazon’s feature description provides additional detail.
Shopify: buyer search and merchant distribution
Shopify’s June 2026 Spring Edition describes AI-powered Shop Search for buyers. Shoppers can use conversational product queries, and Shopify says results are tailored to shopping history; its example is a request for a waterproof jacket for a weekend hiking trip. This is a search experience in Shop, not a claim that Shopify offers a universal assistant for shopping across every retailer.
Rank #2
Shopify also describes merchant-facing infrastructure intended to make product data and catalogs usable across AI channels and future commerce partners. That catalog-distribution work is a different layer from a consumer searching in Shop. The partner mix and rollout can change, so merchants should confirm which channels are available to their store before relying on a particular integration. Details are in Shopify’s Spring Edition.

| Question | Meta AI shopping mode | Amazon Alexa for Shopping | Shopify AI shopping tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where products or information come from | Nearby Marketplace listings, options from across the internet, and public content across Meta apps, as described by Meta. | Amazon’s catalog, with personalization informed by Amazon shopping history, as described by Amazon. | Shop Search provides conversational product discovery; separate merchant infrastructure is intended to make catalogs usable across AI channels. |
| Primary job | Inspiration and local or broader discovery. | Product questions, recommendations, comparison, price tracking, and shopping actions. | Conversational product search for buyers, plus catalog distribution infrastructure for merchants. |
| Personalization described | Meta said AI interactions would begin informing content and ad recommendations on its platforms from December 16, 2025. This is relevant context, not a complete description of every shopping-mode input. Meta’s explanation. | Amazon explicitly cites shopping history and Alexa+ personalization. | Shop Search tailors results to shopping history. |
| Purchase path | The announcement emphasizes discovery and results; it does not establish a consistent purchase flow for all results. | Amazon describes shopping actions within its shopping experience. | Shop Search is a buyer discovery surface; merchant tools concern distribution to AI channels. A purchase path depends on the surface and channel. |

How to choose the right one
Choose Meta AI for discovery that starts with ideas or nearby listings
Meta’s described mix is most relevant when you are browsing for inspiration, looking for local Marketplace items, or want product ideas connected to public content from Meta apps. Treat results as leads to inspect: the announcement does not establish that every result is available in every market or that recommendations have been independently tested.
Rank #3
Choose Alexa for Shopping for Amazon-focused research
If the products you are considering are on Amazon and you want to ask follow-up questions, compare listed features and reviews, track prices, or take shopping actions, Amazon’s assistant is the one designed around that store. The announced U.S. availability is not a guarantee that the feature appears for every account, device, or location.
Use Shopify’s buyer search or merchant tools according to your role
For shoppers, Shop Search is relevant when you want to describe a product need conversationally and receive results tailored to Shop shopping history. For merchants, Shopify’s AI commerce infrastructure is about exposing catalog data to supported AI channels—not simply enabling a Shopify-branded chatbot. Check channel availability and eligibility for your specific store rather than assuming a particular partner is included.

The public descriptions are company announcements, not an independent head-to-head test. They do not establish which tool is more accurate, saves more money, converts better, or produces the best recommendations. Meta’s daily Marketplace listing volume and Amazon’s Rufus customer figure measure different things and should not be compared as usage or performance rankings. Meta Director of E-commerce & Retail Meghna Apparao described a shift from search-and-buy toward discovery in a May 13, 2026 article about shopping trends in India; that is company commentary in an India-specific context, not a universal consumer study. Availability is also surface-, account-, market-, and merchant-dependent. Before choosing a workflow, verify that the relevant feature is present in your app or account and, for a Shopify merchant, that the intended AI channel supports your store.
