Move the existing Verizon line rather than adding service. During iPhone setup, choose the option to transfer your phone number or cellular plan from the previous iPhone. If that option is unavailable, use My Verizon’s move-or-activate flow for the existing line. Do not choose Add a line unless you actually want another number.
What you are trying to do
A Verizon eSIM transfer replaces the old iPhone on your current mobile line. Your phone number, plan and billing line remain the same; the new iPhone receives the eSIM and the previous SIM is turned off for that line. The process is different from opening a new Verizon line, which can create a second number and a separate service charge.

There are two practical routes:
- Apple eSIM Quick Transfer: the simplest iPhone-to-iPhone method when both phones, the same Apple Account, Bluetooth and compatible iOS are available.
- My Verizon: the fallback or preferred route when Quick Transfer is missing, fails, or you need Verizon to move the existing line directly.
Apple describes the supported carrier process this way: “If your carrier supports eSIM Quick Transfer, you can transfer the SIM from your previous iPhone to your new iPhone without contacting them.” This wording appears on Apple Support’s Set up eSIM on iPhone page.

Do not erase or trade in the old iPhone until the new phone can make a call, send a text and use Verizon mobile data. The old phone may be needed for authentication, especially on an account with only one line.

| Both iPhones | Quick Transfer moves the SIM information from the previous iPhone to the new one. | Keep the phones close together and leave the old iPhone powered on and unlocked. |
| Apple Account | Apple’s nearby transfer flow requires both iPhones to be signed in with the same Apple Account. | Know the Apple Account credentials used on both devices. |
| Bluetooth | The phones use a nearby wireless connection to discover and authorize the transfer. | Turn on Bluetooth on both iPhones. |
| Compatible iOS | Apple’s current Quick Transfer instructions list iOS 18.4 or later for this flow. | Update the phones if the transfer prompt does not appear, provided the devices support that update. |
| Wi-Fi | My Verizon can perform the move over Wi-Fi, and the old phone may need to receive an authentication prompt. | Connect the new iPhone and, if possible, the old iPhone to Wi-Fi. |
| Verizon account role | Verizon restricts an existing-line device move to an Account Owner or Account Manager. | Use an account login with one of those roles. |
The old iPhone does not need a physical SIM adapter for this procedure. The goal is to move the Verizon line to the new phone’s eSIM, not to obtain another SIM or activate another number.
Method 1: Transfer the line with Apple eSIM Quick Transfer
During initial setup of the new iPhone
- Turn on the new iPhone and proceed through setup until cellular service is offered.
- When the cellular screen appears, choose the option to transfer your phone number or cellular plan from the previous iPhone. The exact wording can vary slightly by iOS release.
- Keep the old iPhone nearby, unlocked and with Bluetooth enabled. Follow the approval prompts shown on the old phone.
- Wait while the new iPhone activates the Verizon plan. Do not remove the old phone from the area or power it off while the transfer is being authorized.
- When the new phone shows Verizon service, test a call, an SMS message and mobile data before erasing the old iPhone.
Activating the new plan deactivates the previous SIM for that line. That is expected: the number is being moved, not duplicated.
If the new iPhone has already been set up
- Open Settings on the new iPhone.
- Tap Cellular.
- Tap Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
- Choose the option to transfer a plan from another iPhone. Depending on the screen, it may be labeled Transfer From Nearby iPhone.
- Approve the transfer on the old iPhone and wait for activation to finish.
- Confirm that the new phone displays Verizon service, then perform the three-function test: call, SMS and cellular data.
If neither transfer label appears, do not substitute a new-line activation. Move to the My Verizon procedure below. The missing option can indicate that the phones, iOS versions, account state or carrier configuration do not meet Quick Transfer’s requirements.

Method 2: Move the existing line in My Verizon
Verizon’s app can move an existing mobile number to a different eSIM-enabled smartphone. Verizon says this process works over Wi-Fi, does not require you to type the device IMEI or SIM ICCID, and activates service instantly over Wi-Fi once the move is completed.
- Connect the new iPhone to Wi-Fi. Keep the old iPhone available in case Verizon requests authentication.
- Open the My Verizon app and sign in with an account that is an Account Owner or Account Manager.
- Open the Mobile tab.
- Select the device or mobile line you already use. Choose the option to move, change or activate that existing line on the new device.
- Follow Verizon’s prompts to identify the new eSIM-enabled iPhone and authorize the move. Select the existing number; do not select Add a line.
- Wait for the activation confirmation. Keep the new iPhone on Wi-Fi while Verizon provisions the eSIM.
- Check for Verizon service on the new phone, then call, text and use mobile data.
Verizon’s own explanation is explicit: “After you move your number to the new device, service is deactivated on the old phone.” That deactivation is the safeguard that keeps one number attached to one active device on the line.
Existing-line move versus adding a line
The wording in Verizon’s app matters. A device change on an existing line replaces the phone attached to that line. Add a line is a different transaction intended to add another service line.

| Screen or choice | Use it when | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer your phone number or cellular plan | You are moving the Verizon number from the old iPhone during setup. | The existing number is activated on the new iPhone. |
| Transfer From Nearby iPhone | The new iPhone is already set up and both phones meet Quick Transfer requirements. | The existing plan is transferred from the nearby iPhone. |
| Move or activate an existing device/line in My Verizon | Quick Transfer is unavailable or you prefer Verizon’s account flow. | The selected current line moves to the new eSIM-enabled iPhone. |
| Add a line | Only when you intentionally want another mobile number and service line. | A new line may be created; this is not the normal replacement-phone path. |
If a screen asks you to select a number, choose the number already used on the old iPhone. Stop if the only available action is to create new service and use My Verizon or Verizon support to change the device on the current line instead.
Which method should you use?
| Situation | Best first choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You have both iPhones, the same Apple Account, Bluetooth and iOS 18.4 or later. | Apple Quick Transfer | It is designed for an iPhone-to-iPhone move and does not require contacting Verizon. |
| The new iPhone is already configured and both phones are nearby. | Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM | You can start the nearby transfer without resetting the new phone. |
| Quick Transfer is missing or repeatedly fails. | My Verizon | Verizon can move the existing line through the Mobile tab over Wi-Fi. |
| You cannot use the old iPhone for nearby approval. | My Verizon or Verizon support | The app may provide account-based activation, although a single-line account can still require the old phone for authentication. |
| You deliberately want a second number. | Add a line | This is the one situation in which a new-line activation is appropriate. |
What to do when Quick Transfer is unavailable
Apple documents several carrier-activation alternatives: a carrier activation link, a carrier app, manual eSIM details or a carrier-issued QR code. For a Verizon number, use Verizon’s My Verizon app or Verizon’s support instructions so the number is moved on the existing account line.
Do not scan a QR code or start an activation labeled as a new line merely because Quick Transfer is absent. A QR code can be a legitimate carrier method, but the label and account action still need to identify the current Verizon line. If you are unsure which number the activation will use, stop before confirming and ask Verizon to move the existing line.

Manual eSIM details are also carrier-specific. Do not guess an SM-DP+ address, activation code, IMEI or ICCID. Verizon’s app-based existing-line flow is intended to avoid entering those identifiers yourself.

Activation can take the new phone from No Service or SOS to Verizon. Wait for the carrier name or normal signal indicator, then run these checks:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Voice: place a call to a number you can answer or to voicemail.
- Messaging: send an SMS and confirm that a reply arrives. Test SMS separately from an internet messaging service.
- Mobile data: turn off Wi-Fi temporarily and load a webpage or another data-dependent service.
- Line identity: check the new iPhone’s cellular settings to ensure the transferred Verizon line is present and selected for calls, messages and data as appropriate.
Only after all three network functions work should you erase, sell or trade in the old iPhone. If the old phone is still needed for account authentication, retaining it until verification is complete prevents an avoidable lockout.

Troubleshooting a failed or incomplete activation
The transfer option never appears
- Confirm that both iPhones use the same Apple Account.
- Unlock the old iPhone and turn on Bluetooth on both phones.
- Keep the phones close together and verify compatible iOS; Apple’s current instructions list iOS 18.4 or later for Quick Transfer.
- Make sure the new iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi.
- If the prompt remains absent, use My Verizon rather than choosing Add a line.
The transfer starts but does not complete
- Keep both phones powered on, nearby and unlocked while the approval screens are active.
- Check that the old phone can receive the authentication request. On a one-line account, that phone may be required to prove account access.
- Quit and reopen My Verizon if you are using the app, then return to the Mobile tab and select the existing line again.
- Do not begin a second activation under Add a line while the first attempt is unresolved; that can send you into a new-line workflow instead of fixing the device move.
The new iPhone remains on No Service or SOS
- Wait briefly for the activation state to update while the phone remains connected to Wi-Fi.
- Restart the new iPhone. Verizon’s activation FAQ recommends a restart when calls or connectivity do not return after the move.
- After restarting, check again for Verizon service and repeat the call, SMS and mobile-data tests.
- If service still does not return, use Verizon’s device troubleshooter or contact Verizon support. Explain that you are replacing the device on an existing line and that the new iPhone’s eSIM is not active.
Calls work but texts or data do not
Run each test separately because partial service can hide an incomplete activation. Confirm the Verizon line is selected for cellular data and that Wi-Fi is disabled during the data test. If the line still behaves inconsistently after a restart, use Verizon support or its device troubleshooter rather than creating another line to “fix” the problem.
Account and authentication details that can block the move
Only a Verizon Account Owner or Account Manager can move an existing line through the documented My Verizon process. If you are a different account user, ask one of those authorized people to perform the move or to update your account access.
On an account with only one line, the old iPhone may be needed to receive an authentication challenge. This is why erasing the old device first is risky. Keep it connected and usable until the new eSIM is verified.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe transfer does not require entering the new phone’s IMEI or SIM ICCID in the My Verizon flow described by Verizon. If a different screen asks for identifiers, confirm that you are in the existing-line device-move path and not in a new activation flow.
After the number is working on the new iPhone
- Confirm that incoming calls reach the new iPhone.
- Send and receive SMS, not only internet-based messages.
- Test mobile data away from Wi-Fi.
- Keep the old iPhone available until you no longer need it for authentication or account recovery.
- Erase the old iPhone only after the transfer is fully verified and you have backed up any data you still need.
The essential distinction is simple: select a transfer or move action for the current Verizon line. A successful activation places that line on the new iPhone and deactivates service on the old phone; it does not create a second number.
