How to Transfer 3DS Data to a Larger SD Card

Move a 3DS card’s contents to a larger compatible card by copying the whole card through a computer, then checking it in the same console before retiring the original.

To upgrade storage on the same Nintendo 3DS-family console, copy the entire contents of the old card to a computer, then copy them to a compatible replacement card. Keep the Nintendo 3DS folder intact and leave the original card unchanged until you confirm the replacement works in the console. If you are moving content to a different console, use Nintendo’s separate system-transfer process instead.

Check which card your 3DS uses

Choose a card for your exact console model before copying anything. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance, checked on October 4, 2026, lists SDHC cards from 4 GB through 32 GB for original Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, and 2DS models. New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, and New Nintendo 2DS XL use microSDHC in the same capacity range. Nintendo lists SD and microSD cards up to 2 GB as well, but does not consider SDXC or microSDXC compatible. See Nintendo’s SD card compatibility guidance.

Console family Card type Nintendo-listed capacity
Original Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS SD up to 2 GB; SDHC SDHC: 4 GB through 32 GB
New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 2DS XL microSD up to 2 GB; microSDHC microSDHC: 4 GB through 32 GB

For a straightforward upgrade within Nintendo’s listed standards, choose a 32 GB SDHC card for an original-family console or a 32 GB microSDHC card for a New-family console. Nintendo says it cannot guarantee products other than the card included with the system, so the listed standard and capacity are compatibility guidance, not a guarantee for every third-party card. The cited guidance does not establish a required speed rating or endorse particular brands.

What you need

  • A compatible replacement card for your console model.
  • A computer with an SD or microSD slot, or a card reader/writer that accepts the card. A microSD-to-SD adapter may be needed if the computer has only a full-size SD slot.
  • For New Nintendo 3DS-family models, a size #0 crosshead screwdriver may be needed to remove the backplate and reach the microSD card. Follow Nintendo’s microSD card access instructions.

Copy the old card to the larger card

  1. Turn off the console. Do not remove its SD or microSD card while the system is on. On a New-family model, use the appropriate screwdriver to access the microSD card if required.
  2. Copy the old card to the computer. Insert the source card into the computer or reader. In File Explorer on Windows or Finder on Mac, copy all of the card’s contents to a folder on the computer. Nintendo instructs users to copy the entire Nintendo 3DS folder; do not open it to choose, rename, or change individual files. Follow your computer’s normal eject procedure before removing the source card. Nintendo’s SD card transfer instructions describe this copy method.
  3. Copy the saved contents to the replacement card. Eject the source card, insert the new card, and copy the saved contents from the computer onto it, preserving the folder structure. Do not erase or alter the source card.
  4. Eject and install the replacement. Use the computer’s normal eject procedure before removing the new card, then install it in the same console.
  5. Check the console before retiring the old card. Turn on the system and verify that the expected downloaded software and other card content are available. Keep the old card unchanged until this check is complete.

Nintendo also cautions against using save data from the old card after transfer or overwriting data by copying onto the same card again. Treat the original card as a backup during verification rather than as a second usable copy of the transferred data.

If you are moving to another console

A card copy is for replacing storage in the same console. It does not by itself make copied content usable on a different 3DS-family system. To move content between consoles, use Nintendo’s system-transfer guide, which covers PC-based, wireless, and low-capacity transfer choices for some situations. The PC-based process for New systems has separate prerequisites, including an active internet connection, matching region settings, current system updates, and no Nintendo Network ID linked to the target system; check Nintendo’s current instructions for the process that applies to your models.
