For a self-managed 24/7 4K YouTube stream, a practical starting point to evaluate is FFmpeg on a GPU-backed EC2 instance such as the g4dn family, sending one correctly configured stream to YouTube over RTMPS. It is only a starting point: the right instance depends on your source, codec, frame rate, and output settings, and an AWS benchmark is not proof that your particular workload will run continuously without interruption. If you would rather not operate an encoder, compare that approach with AWS Elemental MediaLive—or, for uploaded recordings and playlists, StreamNeo.
What the EC2 encoder needs to do
The EC2 machine reads your source video or playlist, decodes it, and either passes it through or transcodes it to a profile YouTube can ingest. FFmpeg then sends that one live input to YouTube. YouTube creates the viewer formats: it says it automatically transcodes incoming live video into multiple output formats for viewers. Unless another part of your system requires multiple renditions, you do not need to encode a separate ladder of viewer resolutions on EC2.

For a continuous channel, this is more than an FFmpeg command. You also need to keep the process supervised, observe stream health, protect the stream key, monitor the input and disk, and decide how service will recover if the instance, process, network path, or YouTube connection fails.

Choose an approach before sizing EC2
| Approach | What it means | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | First option for uploaded videos or playlists: it runs the YouTube stream from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. | You want a recording or playlist to run continuously without maintaining an EC2 encoder. |
| FFmpeg on EC2 | You manage the instance, FFmpeg build, encoding settings, process supervision, monitoring, patching, and recovery. | You need direct control over a custom pipeline and can own its operations. |
| AWS Elemental MediaLive | A managed live encoding service with configuration-dependent charges; additional packaging and delivery services may be part of a broader design. | You prefer a managed encoding workflow and have confirmed the needed configuration and regional availability. |
There is no matched current price comparison for the same 24/7 4K YouTube workload on EC2 and MediaLive, so the available figures do not establish which is cheaper. AWS’s FFmpeg benchmark is useful for choosing a test candidate, not for promising capacity or availability for your channel. AWS’s FFmpeg benchmark reported up to four parallel 4K-to-lower-resolution live encodings on g4dn in its tested configuration; that workload encoded to five lower resolutions, not one 4K YouTube output, and the result is not a 24/7 service guarantee.

Set the YouTube ingest profile
Check YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance before launch; platform recommendations can change. The current guidance lists these bitrate targets for 2160p (4K):
| Output | Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p, 30 fps | H.264 | 11 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p, 30 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p, 60 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p, 60 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current guidance values, not a guarantee that a particular source or connection will stream reliably. Match the output frame rate to the source and intended channel profile. YouTube recommends progressive video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not longer than four seconds), and RTMPS. It recommends AAC or MP3 audio. For SDR, its guidance specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth; for HDR it recommends H.265/HEVC and 10-bit depth and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Its 4K/2160p stream cannot use the low-latency option, so plan for normal latency.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion like the planned stream, then checking stream health and messages in Live Control Room. Use that advice as a preflight, not just a one-time launch check: a long-duration test can reveal input changes, thermal or encoder load issues, and reconnection behavior that a short test may miss.
Build the EC2 and FFmpeg pipeline
1. Prepare the source and instance candidate
Choose the actual source file or playlist you intend to run, then test it on the EC2 instance type you are considering. A g4dn instance is a reasonable GPU-backed candidate because AWS has published live FFmpeg benchmark results for that family. The benchmark does not establish a universal instance size for a single 4K output. Codec, frame rate, scene complexity, scaling, audio handling, FFmpeg build, and the number of simultaneous outputs all change the workload.

Install an FFmpeg build that includes the encoder you plan to use, and verify it on the instance before configuring a service. For an NVIDIA GPU path, confirm the installed build exposes the relevant NVENC encoder and that the NVIDIA driver is working. If the encoder is absent or fails to initialize, resolve that before tuning YouTube settings. Do not infer that having a GPU automatically means FFmpeg is using it.
2. Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you will use.
- Copy the server/ingest address and stream key shown for that stream. Use RTMPS as YouTube recommends.
- Store the complete publish destination securely, such as in a permissions-restricted environment file or secret manager. Do not put the stream key in a public script, source repository, shared screenshot, or log. Treat it as a password; regenerate it in YouTube if it is exposed.
The precise controls shown in YouTube Studio can vary with account setup. Confirm the destination and key in the current Live Control Room rather than relying on an address copied from an old configuration.
3. Test a single-file loop with an example FFmpeg command
The following is an example shape, not a tested universal command. It assumes a 30 fps H.264 SDR output and a working FFmpeg build with h264_nvenc. Set YOUTUBE_PUBLISH_URL to the full publish destination using the server address and stream key provided in Live Control Room; keep that value private. Select an encoder preset supported by your installed FFmpeg build, and verify the actual output in YouTube’s stream health panel.

-re paces file playback in real time, and -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. The filter fits the picture within 3840×2160 and pads any unused area; review the result for unwanted bars or cropping. This example sets a 60-frame GOP, which is two seconds at 30 fps. For 60 fps, use a two-second GOP of 120 frames and select the 60 fps bitrate recommendation for the codec. If the source is already in the right format and your installed FFmpeg supports safe stream copy, copying rather than re-encoding may reduce compute use, but only do so after confirming the stream’s codec, pixel format, frame rate, keyframe cadence, and audio are suitable for YouTube ingest. Otherwise transcode and inspect the actual output.

For other sources, do not blindly keep the example’s 30 fps, H.264, SDR filter, or bitrate. Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio, and color characteristics to the profile you will actually deliver. A 60 fps source encoded as 30 fps changes motion cadence; an HDR source passed through an SDR filter does not remain a proper HDR workflow. Validate every material change in a test stream.
4. Loop a playlist only after validating continuity
If the channel rotates multiple files, create a playlist in the order you want, then feed it through FFmpeg using a playlist/concat workflow compatible with your installed build. Files intended for seamless transitions should have compatible codecs, time bases, frame rates, dimensions, and audio layouts. Concatenation can fail or produce discontinuities when files differ; test the exact playlist for gaps, black frames, audio jumps, and timestamp errors before leaving it unattended. A single-file loop is a simpler initial test.
5. Run it under supervision and monitor it
Once the manual test is stable, run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd or an equivalent service manager configured to restart the process after an unexpected exit. A restart policy does not by itself provide high availability: the same instance, disk, or network failure can still stop the stream. Capture FFmpeg logs and alert on process exits, repeated reconnects, dropped frames, encoder lag, abnormal CPU/GPU use, disk exhaustion, and missing or changing input files. Restrict access to logs if they could contain sensitive configuration.

Estimate the recurring cost correctly
For a 24/7 design, price the whole pipeline in the AWS region you will use. A typical month is about 730 runtime hours, with the actual number depending on the month. Include the selected EC2 instance, storage and reads, output network egress or CDN delivery, logging and metrics, and any redundancy or standby capacity. Compare options using equivalent outputs, regions, and availability assumptions.
AWS’s published MediaLive example totals $21.791 per hour for a UHD input and six configured outputs (three AVC and three HEVC) in US East (N. Virginia), or $0.363 per minute with a ten-minute minimum. It is a configuration-specific pricing illustration, not a quote for this single-output EC2 workflow. MediaLive charges depend on inputs, outputs, codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and selected features. See AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing and confirm current regional availability and prices.
Delivery can outweigh encoding when an audience is large. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS planning example estimates $69.74 for a one-hour event with approximately 1,000 viewers. That example assumes US East (N. Virginia), a 540p SD profile, viewers watching the highest bitrate, and a 99% CDN cache/hit ratio; $67.24 of the estimate is CloudFront distribution. It is not a 4K or EC2 cost forecast. AWS notes that prices are subject to change. Use AWS Budgets and Cost Explorer, and enter your own region, bitrate, audience, storage, delivery and failover assumptions rather than scaling that example as if it were a quote.

When MediaLive or a different ingest path makes sense
MediaLive is worth evaluating when reducing the work of operating the encoder matters more than having a self-managed FFmpeg process. It remains necessary to confirm the exact channel configuration, region, output needs, monitoring, packaging, delivery path, and total cost. The published MediaLive example above uses multiple outputs and should not be compared directly with one EC2-to-YouTube stream.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for live encoder ingest. AWS published a 2021-04-14 example of a specific 4K HDR workflow using MediaLive or an Elemental Live appliance with YouTube HLS ingest, HEVC, AAC in MPEG-2 transport stream, 3840×2160 video, and two-second GOP settings. Treat it as a dated, specialized reference—not a general replacement for YouTube’s current RTMPS recommendation—and check current YouTube and AWS documentation before using that route: AWS’s 4K HDR HLS ingest article.
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded videos or a playlist, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining the EC2 encoder: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from its cloud service; it does not broadcast a camera feed and streams to YouTube only. Nothing has to stay on at home, including a computer, OBS, or home internet connection. Every slot supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use AV1 or H.265 instead of H.264 for 4K?
YouTube’s current live encoder table includes bitrate guidance for AV1 and H.265/HEVC as well as H.264. Confirm support and ingest health for the encoder and stream profile you intend to use before relying on either codec.
Can one EC2 instance guarantee an uninterrupted stream?
No. Neither the cited AWS benchmark nor a restart policy proves uninterrupted 24/7 service. An availability target needs an explicit failover design and recovery testing.
