There is no single, authoritative “ChatGPT visibility score.” Track AI search presence with three layers: Google Search Console for impressions from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Bing Webmaster Tools for citations in Microsoft’s AI experiences, and a repeatable prompt log for ChatGPT and other assistants. Combine those records with your analytics so you can see whether visibility is associated with branded searches, referrals, leads, or sales without treating a citation as proof of traffic.
What “AI search visibility” actually means
Traditional search reporting starts with a query, a result position and a click. AI answers are less uniform. An assistant may mention a company without linking to it, cite one of its pages, recommend a competitor instead, or answer from a mixture of web sources. The same prompt can also produce different wording and sources on separate runs.

For practical reporting, define visibility as a set of observable outcomes rather than one score:

- Mention coverage: how often your brand appears in the answers to the prompts you track.
- Citation coverage: how often your domain or a page on it is cited.
- Citation share: where a platform reports the proportion of citations attributed to your site for a particular grounding query.
- Competitive presence: which alternatives are named or cited in the same answers.
- Intent and topic coverage: the subjects and stages of the buyer journey in which your brand appears.
- Business outcomes: changes in AI referrals, branded search, leads and conversions measured in your own analytics.
These measures answer different questions. A brand can be mentioned frequently but rarely cited, or cited on an informational topic without being recommended for a purchase. Keep the surface, geography, date range and prompt set attached to every result.

The three-layer measurement stack
| Layer | What it measures | Best use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console Generative AI performance report | Organic impressions from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode; pages, country and device dimensions | Trend reporting for Google’s own generative search features | Impressions are not a cross-assistant brand score and do not show ChatGPT visibility |
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | How content appears in AI-generated answers across Microsoft Copilot, Bing and selected partner experiences; intents, topics and citations | Understanding grounding queries and the sources Microsoft’s systems cite | Citation Share is observational, not a ranking system, traffic share, quality score or competitive scoreboard |
| Manual prompt log | Mentions, citations, competitors, wording and sentiment in ChatGPT and other assistants | Measuring surfaces that do not expose a public visibility dashboard | Individual answers are noisy; trends require repeated, consistently run prompts |
Use the first two layers as first-party evidence and the prompt log to cover assistants and questions they do not report directly. A paid monitoring service can automate the log later, but it does not turn an answer sample into a universal ranking.
Use Google Search Console for Google AI visibility
What the report contains
Google’s Generative AI performance report shows how your site performs in generative AI features on Google Search. It includes AI Overviews and AI Mode and lets you examine how organic impressions change over time, which pages receive the highest or lowest impressions, and where impressions originate by country and device.
The report became available to all websites worldwide on August 31, 2026. Dates can be grouped by day, week or month and are reported in Pacific Time. The newest period may be preliminary, so avoid treating the last day or two as final.
How to use it
- Open the verified property for your site in Google Search Console.
- Select the Generative AI performance report.
- Choose a date range and group results by day, week or month. Record that the interface uses Pacific Time.
- Review total impressions, then break them down by page, country and device.
- Separate AI Overview and AI Mode views when the report offers that filter, and export the period for your reporting sheet.
- Compare equivalent periods rather than a partial current period with a completed prior period.
This is an exposure report. It does not provide a universal percentage of ChatGPT mentions, a share-of-voice number across assistants, or proof that an impression produced a visit. Use your analytics to look for associated clicks, branded queries and conversions.

- Intents organize the kinds of questions that produce answers about your site.
- Topics group the subject areas associated with those questions.
- Citation Share is the percentage of citations attributed to your site out of all citations shown for the same grounding query.
- Compare helps examine differences between sites or reporting selections where the preview provides that comparison.
Interpret Citation Share correctly
Microsoft explicitly describes Citation Share as observational. It is not a ranking system, competitive scoreboard, traffic share or quality score. A higher value means your site supplied more of the citations displayed for the measured grounding query; it does not establish that users preferred your answer, clicked it or converted.
Save the query context, date and market with every exported value. A change may reflect different grounding queries or answer composition rather than a change in conventional search ranking.
Track ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and other assistants with a prompt log
Why manual sampling is necessary
ChatGPT can decide to search the web when current information would improve an answer, and a user can also select web search manually. Search responses may contain inline citations and a Sources area. OpenAI’s documentation does not provide a public dashboard for brand mentions or share of voice, so the defensible alternative is a fixed, repeatable sample.
The same method works for other assistants relevant to your audience, including Perplexity, Gemini or a regional service. Treat each assistant and surface as a separate measurement stream; do not merge them into one unexplained number.
Choose the prompt set
Start with 20 to 50 real buyer questions. Include non-brand wording, branded questions and questions that name competitors. Keep the wording stable so a month-to-month change is not simply a different test.

- Informational: questions that seek definitions, requirements or how-to guidance.
- Commercial: questions asking for products, providers, pricing or alternatives.
- Navigational: questions seeking a specific company, site or product.
- Local: questions that include a city, region or service area.
- Research and comparison: “best,” “versus,” shortlist and evaluation questions.
- Task-solving: prompts asking the assistant to complete a practical job or recommend a workflow.
Tag every prompt as brand or non-brand, funnel stage, location, topic and intent. A small, representative set is more useful than hundreds of improvised questions that change every time.

A spreadsheet is sufficient at the beginning. Keep one row per prompt run, not one row per prompt in a summary-only dashboard, so you retain the answer evidence.
| Column | What to record |
|---|---|
| Run date and time | Timestamp, including time zone |
| Assistant and surface | For example, ChatGPT web search, Bing, Copilot or another selected interface |
| Model or experience label | The model or product label shown by the interface, when available |
| Prompt ID and exact wording | A stable identifier and the complete question |
| Market and language | Country, city or region and interface language |
| Intent, topic and funnel stage | Your controlled tags, such as commercial/comparison/mid-funnel |
| Mention status | Recommended, merely mentioned or absent |
| Citation status | Your domain cited, another page cited, or no citation shown |
| Cited URLs | Copy every displayed URL exactly |
| Competitors named or cited | Record each one and its role in the answer |
| Description and sentiment | How the answer characterizes your brand; use a consistent coding rule |
| Full answer | Save the complete response, not only a screenshot or excerpt |
| Notes | Major answer changes, missing pages, qualification or ambiguity |
Copying the full response matters because a short mention can sound positive while the surrounding qualifications change its practical meaning. Preserve citations and the Sources area separately where the interface displays them.
Run a baseline and repeat it consistently
- Define scope. List the audience, markets, products and assistants that matter to your business.
- Freeze the test set. Select 20–50 buyer prompts and assign the tags described above.
- Run every surface. Establish one baseline across ChatGPT, Google AI Search where available, Bing or Copilot, Perplexity, Gemini and any other service your audience actually uses.
- Capture evidence. Save the full answer, timestamp, model or surface, cited URLs, named competitors and whether the brand was recommended, merely mentioned or absent.
- Repeat on a schedule. Run weekly when you need fast detection of changes; run monthly when you need a steadier trend. Keep wording, market and recording rules constant.
- Compare periods. Calculate coverage and competitor changes by assistant, intent, topic and market instead of reporting one blended percentage.
- Investigate recurring sources. Identify your pages and external sources that repeatedly earn citations, then examine what those pages make clear or leave unanswered.
Do not treat one answer as a ranking event. The signal is the direction and consistency across repeated runs.
Calculate the metrics that answer business questions
| Metric | Calculation | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Mention coverage | Prompts where the brand appears ÷ total tracked prompts × 100 | How often does the assistant include us? |
| Citation coverage | Prompts citing your domain or page ÷ total tracked prompts × 100 | How often can readers verify the answer through our site? |
| Citation Share | Use the platform’s reported percentage for the same grounding query | What proportion of displayed citations did the platform attribute to us? |
| Competitive presence | Count and percentage of runs naming or citing each competitor | Who appears alongside or instead of us? |
| Intent and topic coverage | Mention or citation coverage grouped by your intent and topic tags | Which buyer needs are covered or missing? |
| Business outcome trend | Compare AI referrals, branded search, leads and conversions by period in analytics | Is visibility associated with measurable activity? |
Visibility alone does not prove causation. A rise in mentions may coincide with a campaign, seasonality, a product launch or a change in the assistant. Report associations and investigate them rather than promising that a citation generated a sale.

Improve the pages that AI systems can use
Meet Google’s eligibility requirements
Google says pages need normal Search indexing and snippet eligibility to appear in its generative AI features. Its guidance emphasizes foundational technical SEO and unique, helpful, reliable, people-first content. It says there is no requirement for special AI text files or markup, no ideal page length and no need to pursue inauthentic mentions.
That means the first fixes are ordinary but important: make important pages crawlable and indexable, ensure the visible copy answers the topic directly, keep facts current, and remove ambiguity that could make an answer misrepresent your product or service.
Use citation evidence to prioritize work
- For pages repeatedly cited, check that the cited section states the key fact plainly and includes the relevant date, location, edition or limitation.
- For pages that receive impressions but few citations, improve topical coverage, headings, internal links and the clarity of definitions, comparisons and specifications.
- For questions where external pages are cited instead, examine whether those pages provide clearer evidence, better structure or more complete answers; improve your own page without copying them.
- Resolve technical accessibility problems that prevent important content from being read normally by search systems.
Do not manufacture third-party mentions or add special files simply to signal that content is “for AI.” The stated guidance favors useful, reliable information written for people.
Set a reporting cadence that separates noise from trend
Weekly operating review
Use weekly runs to catch sudden changes: a product page disappearing from citations, a competitor appearing for a high-value prompt, or an answer changing its description of your brand. Review the raw answers and URLs, not just the percentages.
Monthly trend report
Use a monthly report for decisions. Show the prompt count, assistants and surfaces tested, markets, date range, mention and citation coverage, competitor presence, top cited pages and notable answer changes. Include Google’s impression trend and Bing’s reported citation data in their own sections.
Best Value
Every result should state its measurement surface, geography, date range, prompt set and limitations. This prevents a Google impression number from being mistaken for a ChatGPT score or a Bing Citation Share percentage from being read as traffic share.
When a paid monitoring platform is worthwhile
Manual logging is usually the strongest starting point because you can inspect the exact answer and control the prompts. Consider an AI visibility monitoring platform or AEO tracking software when the number of prompts, markets, assistants or clients makes manual runs too slow.
Evaluate a service on workflow capabilities rather than claims of secret rankings:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Can you import and lock your own prompt set?
- Does it retain full answers, citations, timestamps and the tested surface?
- Can it segment by intent, topic, market and competitor?
- Does it export raw evidence as well as charts?
- Can you distinguish a recommendation from a passing mention?
- Does it clearly label sampling, model changes and missing data?
Third-party dashboards are useful for scheduling, comparison and client reporting. They do not have privileged access to internal Google ranking or AI systems, and they cannot establish a universal cross-model benchmark that the official sources do not provide.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot misleading results
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The brand is absent from one answer | Assistant output is variable, the prompt may not call for a provider, or the answer used different sources | Repeat the same prompt on schedule and judge the trend, not one response |
| Citations rise but visits do not | A citation is exposure, not a click; the answer may satisfy the user without a visit | Check referral data, branded search, leads and conversions separately |
| Google impressions change sharply near the current date | The newest Search Console period can be preliminary | Wait for a completed period before declaring a trend |
| Bing Citation Share falls | The grounding query or answer composition may have changed | Record the query context and compare like-for-like periods |
| Different assistants cite different pages | Each system has its own retrieval and answer process | Keep assistant-level results separate and improve pages that repeatedly miss important topics |
| A monitoring tool reports a single “AI score” | The score is a vendor-defined aggregation, not an authoritative universal measure | Inspect its prompt set, weighting, dates and raw citations before using it |
A practical checklist
- Verify the site in Google Search Console and review its Generative AI performance report.
- Open Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance and export Intents, Topics and citation observations available for your property.
- Select 20–50 stable buyer prompts across informational, commercial, navigational, local, research, comparison and task-solving intents.
- Tag each prompt by brand status, funnel stage, location, topic and intent.
- Run a baseline on the assistants and search surfaces relevant to your audience.
- Save complete answers, timestamps, model or surface labels, cited URLs, competitors and recommendation status.
- Repeat weekly for operational monitoring or monthly for a steadier trend.
- Report mention coverage, citation coverage, platform Citation Share, competitors, topic gaps and associated business outcomes separately.
- Improve indexing, technical accessibility, factual clarity, topical coverage and internal linking on pages that should earn citations.
- State the date range, geography, prompt set and limitations every time you publish a result.
