You can track daily movement and workouts without wearing a smartwatch with a screen. A screen-free band or ring can collect activity data in the background, while a phone app or external heart-rate sensor can provide live workout feedback. The key choice is whether you want automatic logging, a way to start sessions deliberately, or live metrics during exercise.
Choose the kind of tracking you need
Passive activity tracking records movement in the background and may suggest what you were doing. A workout session is more intentional: you start or confirm it, and the app may record details such as duration, intensity, route, pace, or heart rate. These functions can overlap, but automatic detection has limits and is not a guarantee that every workout will be logged.

- For background movement: look for a band or ring that tracks daily activity and offers automatic detection.
- For deliberate workout logging: check whether you can start a session on the device or in its app.
- For live feedback: confirm which metrics appear during exercise, and whether you need your phone or a separate heart-rate monitor.
A screen-free device still relies on a companion app for setup, reviewing data, and often workout controls. “No watch screen” does not necessarily mean “no screen during a workout”: the phone may become the display.

| Option | Background and workout tracking | Live metrics and phone needs | Requirements and fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garmin CIRQA Smart Band | Garmin says it tracks daily steps and calories, detects activities automatically, and lets users start more than 80 activity types with a side button. | Outdoor route recording uses GPS from a compatible iPhone or Android phone. The announcement does not describe live workout metrics on a wearable screen. | Garmin says core tracking requires no subscription. A wrist-worn band suits people who prefer a band over a ring. |
| Oura Ring | Automatic Activity Detection suggests activity type, time, duration, and intensity; users can confirm, edit, or dismiss suggestions. Live Activity Tracking is started in the app. | For supported outdoor activity, the phone app uses GPS for a live map, pace, and distance. Compatible BLE heart-rate monitors can provide live heart rate and zones; without one, ring heart-rate data appears in the post-activity summary. | Automatic Activity Detection is listed for Gen2 and Gen3 or later with active membership. Live Activity Tracking is listed for Gen3 or later with active membership. Route and distance details require location services and carrying a phone. |
| WHOOP | WHOOP describes automatic workout detection without a display; its guidance says steady activities with repetitive movement are easier to classify than some lower-intensity or stationary workouts. | There is no built-in GPS or display. A connected phone is needed for route, pace, and elevation; live workout stats cannot be viewed on the wearable. | The cited workout guidance does not establish current plan pricing or membership terms. A screen-free wrist-worn wearable suits users who are comfortable relying on the app. |

What automatic detection can miss
Automatic detection is convenient, but it uses thresholds and can overlook activity. Oura says its Automatic Activity Detection requires an activity to last at least 10 minutes. WHOOP says auto-detection typically requires about 15 minutes of sustained elevated heart rate. WHOOP also notes that lower-intensity or stationary sessions, including some yoga and strength workouts, may be harder to recognize. These are vendor-described behaviors, not independent accuracy findings.
For a workout that matters to your log, use a deliberate start or review the app afterward rather than assuming passive detection caught it. CIRQA offers a side-button start for supported activities; Oura’s Live Activity Tracking starts in its app. WHOOP’s cited guidance describes auto-detection, not an on-device session control.

When a phone or sensor is needed
Outdoor route, pace, and distance
For the documented outdoor route features, expect to bring a phone. Garmin CIRQA uses connected GPS from a compatible iPhone or Android phone, Oura uses phone GPS for supported outdoor live activity and route details, and WHOOP says a connected phone is required for distance, pace, and elevation. Location services or GPS must be available for route data; carrying a screen-free wearable alone does not provide the phone-based route details described by these manufacturers.

Live heart rate without a wearable display
Oura’s Live Activity Tracking can show live heart rate and zones in the app when paired with a compatible device that exposes the BLE Heart Rate Service. Oura lists Garmin HRM Dual, Polar H10, and Polar Verity Sense among devices it has tested. Without an external monitor, the ring’s heart-rate data is available in the activity summary rather than live on the phone screen. A BLE heart-rate strap is an accessory for live workout readings, not a replacement for a daily activity tracker.

Compare the actual costs and fit
Do not compare only “band versus ring.” Check whether the feature you want works on your device generation, whether membership is needed, and whether you will carry a phone. Garmin’s July 21, 2026 U.S. announcement lists CIRQA at a suggested retail price of $199.99 and says its described core tracking has no subscription requirement; Garmin also claims up to 10 days of battery life. These are manufacturer-stated details, not independent testing, and the price is specific to the U.S. announcement.
Oura’s activity features have generation and membership conditions: its support pages list Automatic Activity Detection for Gen2 and Gen3 or later with active membership, while Live Activity Tracking is listed for Gen3 or later with active membership. WHOOP’s workout-detection article does not establish current pricing or plan terms, so check the current offer for your market before deciding.

- Prefer a band: consider CIRQA if you want button-started activities as well as background tracking, and accept phone-based GPS for outdoor routes.
- Prefer a ring: consider Oura if its generation and membership requirements fit, and you are comfortable using the phone app to start live activity. Add a compatible BLE monitor only if live heart rate is important.
- Prefer automatic logging: WHOOP is designed around background detection, but its own guidance cautions that some workouts are less readily classified; route metrics also require a connected phone.
Comfort is personal: a wrist band and a ring are worn differently, especially during activities involving gripping or equipment. Try the form factor if possible, and check the maker’s fit and activity guidance before relying on it for a particular sport.
