There is no research-backed hour split that makes TV and console sharing fair for every couple. A workable agreement is one both partners help create: make access predictable, set a clear handoff point, account for genuinely fixed events, and review the arrangement after a short trial.
Start by agreeing on what “fair” means
Talk before the next disagreement, when neither person is waiting to use the screen. Each partner should describe what they want the TV or console for, when they prefer to use it, and whether any plans are genuinely time-sensitive—for example, a live broadcast or a scheduled online match.

Then compare expectations. One person may care most about equal time, while the other values predictable access or a chance to use the equipment together. Naming those differences makes it easier to negotiate a plan that addresses both rather than arguing over a single definition of fairness.

Write down a few predictable blocks or alternating turns. Give each person some separate-use time, and include shared viewing or gaming only if both want it. Keep the first version flexible: it is a trial, not a permanent contract.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises families to make a media plan for every household member and revisit it as circumstances change. That guidance is aimed at families, not specifically adult couples, but the planning principle is useful here. See HealthyChildren.org’s guide to making a family media plan.
Example rotation to negotiate
For instance, you could alternate who chooses the first evening’s solo-use block, then switch the next evening; reserve a mutually agreed slot for a fixed-time event when one comes up; and leave one block open for shared use or other plans. The exact days and durations should reflect your routines. This example is a starting point, not a scientifically established formula.

Set a handoff rule that works for games and TV
Choose a turn length and stopping point before anyone starts. A timer can make the agreed limit visible; a phone or console timer is enough, so buying a separate timer is optional.
Games do not always stop neatly when a timer rings. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner recommends setting a timer and agreeing to finish at the end of a round or at the next save point. That advice is written for families, but the practical handoff idea also works between partners. Agree how fixed-time requests and exceptions work
Decide together how much notice is reasonable for a time-sensitive event and how the other person will get a comparable opportunity later. A live event or scheduled match may justify a one-off adjustment; a general preference usually does not need to override the plan. Making that distinction in advance helps keep exceptions from becoming the default.
Review the plan after trying it
Choose a date to check in after you have used the schedule for a while. Ask whether each person had predictable access, whether handoffs felt workable, and whether the arrangement crowded out sleep, work, other responsibilities, or time together. Adjust the blocks or rules where needed. Revisiting a plan is consistent with family media guidance, but this adult-couple approach has not been evaluated as a tested intervention.

Use device settings for account issues, not scheduling
Separate profiles or passcodes may help protect account privacy and purchases on shared devices. The US Federal Trade Commission discusses account controls in guidance for families with children; those settings do not determine who gets the living-room screen at a particular time. Likewise, PlayStation’s Console Sharing feature on PS5 concerns access to purchased games and media and some PlayStation Plus benefits for users on one enabled console, subject to Sony’s conditions.
