To track work time, use a browser-extension timer such as Clockify or Toggl Track, or record it manually in a timesheet. Google Docs’ version history and Activity dashboard show edits or file views—not time spent working.
What Google Docs tracks—and what it doesn’t
Google says edits are automatically saved in version history, which lets users track or undo changes. That is a record of revisions, not a running timer or a total of hours worked. Google’s Docs overview describes this edit-history feature.

The Activity dashboard is different: in qualifying work or school contexts, it can show signed-in viewers of a shared file. It does not establish how long anyone worked on the document. Google’s Activity dashboard help page explains the account, file-ownership, and privacy conditions.
Choose a tracking method
| Method | How time is captured | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Clockify browser extension | Start and stop a timer from Google Docs; review entries and reports in Clockify. | People who want a timer near the document and time reports. |
| Toggl Track browser extension | Start a timer from Docs; the extension documentation says the Docs integration maps the task name. | People who already use Toggl or want its reporting and project options. |
| Manual timesheet | Enter work times, breaks, and other details yourself in a Google Docs or Sheets template. | People who need a simple, manually maintained record. |
Neither an extension timer nor a timesheet proves focused attention or determines whether every minute was productive. Timers record the intervals you start and stop; a manual sheet records the values you enter.

Set up a Clockify timer in Google Docs
Clockify’s instructions describe a Chrome or Firefox extension that adds a timer button to Google Docs documents and spreadsheets. Its integration page says the timer can be stopped from a browser, mobile device, or desktop, and that time entries, timesheets, reports, and exports are managed in Clockify’s web app. These are features described by the vendor, not independent test results.
- Create a Clockify account and install its Chrome or Firefox browser extension.
- Open the Google Docs document you want to track and use the Clockify timer button to start a timer.
- Stop the timer when you finish. You can also stop it from Clockify on a supported mobile or desktop workflow, according to Clockify’s Google Docs integration instructions.
- Review or edit past entries, then use Clockify’s web app for timesheets, analysis, reports, or exports.
Set up Toggl Track in Google Docs
Toggl’s integration instructions describe enabling Google Docs in the browser extension’s settings, then starting a timer using the Toggl icon in Docs. The timer popup can include a description, project, or tags; reports are available in the Toggl web app. Toggl’s browser-extension documentation lists Google Docs as a supported integration and says it maps the task name. That mapping is not a claim that Toggl measures attention or independently determines how long you worked.
- Install the Toggl Track browser extension.
- Open the extension’s settings and enable the Google Docs integration.
- Open a document, select the Toggl icon, and start the timer. Add a description, project, or tags in the popup if useful.
- Stop the timer when the work interval ends, then review or export reports from Toggl’s web app.
Extension interfaces and browser support can change; consult Toggl’s current Google Docs integration page if the icon or settings differ from these instructions.

If you do not need an in-document start/stop control, Toggl offers weekly timesheet templates in Google Docs and Google Sheets formats. The template page describes entering start and end times, breaks, and overtime, with totals for hours worked and billable hours. You enter the information yourself; the template is not an automatic Google Docs timer. See Toggl’s timesheet templates.

Understand Google’s Activity dashboard privacy limits
Google’s dashboard help says people using a work or school account may be able to see signed-in viewers of a shared file. If the file is not owned by a Google Account through work or school, view history is not available there. Users can turn off view history for an individual file or for all files. Views made while history is off will not appear in the dashboard, and hiding dashboard history does not affect view logs outside the Activity dashboard. These controls concern viewer history—not work duration or employee time tracking. Check the Google help page for the conditions that apply to your account and file.
