Use Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) to add structured, product-specific information to WooCommerce’s product editor, then connect those fields to the product-page layout to show them to shoppers. Creating a field does not automatically display it on the storefront. First decide whether the information belongs in a WooCommerce attribute, descriptive product metadata, or a customer-facing product add-on.
Choose the right kind of product data
Pick the data model based on who supplies the information and how the store uses it. WooCommerce attributes are suited to shared characteristics that help group or filter products; custom fields hold additional product metadata. ACF provides an editing interface for that metadata, while product add-ons handle choices or details customers submit during purchase.

| What the information is for | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A shared characteristic such as color, size, or material | WooCommerce attribute | Attributes describe product characteristics and can support customer navigation and filtering. WooCommerce product attributes. |
| Descriptive information specific to a product | ACF field or native product custom field | Both store product metadata. ACF adds a field-building and editing interface; displaying the value still requires a theme, builder, or template implementation. WooCommerce custom fields; ACF Getting Started. |
| A choice, text entry, or paid option supplied by the customer | Product add-on or custom-field extension | This is purchase-time input, not a descriptive fact about the product. WooCommerce’s extension documentation covers field types, product or category targeting, conditions, and optional pricing. WooCommerce Product Add-Ons. |
Before building fields, check whether the information needs to be filterable, whether editors need conditional fields, whether an option changes the price, and where the value should appear on the product page. Those needs determine whether ACF is the right fit and how you will implement the customer-facing output.

Create an ACF field group for products
In WordPress, open the ACF field-group editor, create a field group, and add the fields editors need. ACF field groups organize fields and determine which editing screens show them. Use clear labels for store staff, stable field names for later template references, and field types appropriate to the value, such as text for a short specification or an image field for a product-specific image. ACF describes field types, location rules, and field-value editing in its Getting Started guide.

Set the location rule to products
In the field group’s location settings, target the WooCommerce product post type. That makes the group available while editing products rather than unrelated WordPress content. ACF’s product-specific walkthrough explains how to add custom fields to WooCommerce products.
Make editor entry consistent
For each field, consider whether editors need instructions, required validation, or conditional logic. Instructions clarify what belongs in a field; validation can help prevent missing required values; conditional logic can show fields only when they are relevant. Configure these only where they improve consistency for the people maintaining the catalog.

Enter values on each product
Open a product in the WooCommerce editor and fill in the ACF fields assigned to that product. Save or update the product, then confirm the values remain in the editor. Repeat for each product that needs the information; the field group defines the available structure, while the product record holds that product’s values.

Render ACF values on the product page
Plan a separate presentation step after the fields are saved. WooCommerce’s native custom-field guidance says display requires edits to the theme or site. ACF supports output through theme code and integration with page builders, but the exact method depends on the active theme, builder, and product template. See WooCommerce’s custom-field guidance and ACF’s guide to using field values.
Use the method your store already uses
- Page builder: If your builder supports ACF fields, add a dynamic field element to the product template and select the relevant field. Check that the template is assigned to product pages.
- Theme or custom template: Have the theme’s product template retrieve and render the field value. Use the field’s stable name in the implementation, and escape output appropriately for its content type.
- Theme-specific display controls: If the active theme offers product-template or custom-field controls, use those controls and verify their behavior in the actual product layout.
After implementation, preview a product with a value and one without it. Confirm the value appears in the intended location, that missing values do not leave awkward empty labels or sections, and that the output suits the field type. Do not assume a newly created ACF field is automatically visible to customers.

ACF’s datastore is an optional feature integrating ACF fields with Gutenberg’s native wp.data store; it is not required for ordinary ACF fields on product edit screens. ACF’s datastore documentation, last updated May 14, 2026, lists ACF PRO 6.8.1 or later and WordPress 6.7 or later for that specific feature, and includes a product post-type example. See Using the ACF Datastore for its requirements and setup.
