Workday time tracking is configured by each employer, so the available clock-in buttons, timesheet screens, submission rules, and correction steps depend on your organization. You may record a shift with check-in and check-out, enter hours on a calendar or grid, use a company kiosk, or submit time through another configured method.
How to record time in Workday
- Sign in. Use your employer-provided Workday site or the Workday app. Mobile access must be authorized by your organization, which also supplies the appropriate sign-in details. See Workday mobile information.
- Open your employer’s time task. Look for the time or time-tracking task your organization uses. Depending on its setup, you may see check-in/check-out controls, a time-entry calendar, a weekly grid, or access to a kiosk. Workday does not have one universal menu path or screen label for every employer.
- Enter the required details. Follow any prompts for time type, worktags, comments, meal or break attestations, or a checkout reason. These fields appear only when enabled for your organization.
- Review and submit if required. Check that your recorded time is complete, then submit it if your workflow requires submission. Managers may have separate approval or exception tasks.
Workday describes check-in and check-out as time-clock events. The system can match those events and translate them into time blocks displayed on a worker’s time-entry calendar. Details of how those blocks are reviewed or corrected are controlled by the employer. Workday administrator documentation

Which time-entry method might you see?
| Method | How it works | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Check-in/check-out | Record clock events for a shift; Workday can match events into time blocks. | Mobile or other clock controls must be enabled for your organization. |
| Calendar or weekly grid | Enter time blocks directly rather than recording clock events. | Screen layout and required details vary by employer. |
| Workday Time Kiosk | Workers check in and out using the kiosk app on a company tablet. | Organizations should confirm their tenant’s requirements before purchasing hardware; no specific tablet model or operating system requirement is established here. |
| Imported time | Time blocks or clock events can come from an integrated third-party collection system. | The employer determines the integration and worker-facing process. |
Workday also documents high-volume time entry using a grid, manager mass entry, time-clock history, and schedule-based autofill. These are capabilities available for organizations to configure, not features every employee will see. Workday administrator documentation

The Workday mobile app can support check-in/check-out, time entry and submission, schedule and total views, editing time where enabled, and manager approvals. The exact tasks available on a phone depend on the organization’s setup; a feature supported by the app is not necessarily enabled for every worker or tenant. Workday mobile information

If your mobile clock blocks an action, ask your manager or timekeeping administrator which rules apply.
For administrators: the mobile clock can display time down to seconds, but Workday stores and uses seconds in calculations only when the relevant time-entry template is configured to track them. Workday administrator documentation

Why might Workday block a clock-in or show missing time?
A blocked punch, absent check-in control, or missing time block can reflect the employer’s configuration or permissions—for example, a time-entry rule, schedule restriction, enabled location control, or a workflow that uses direct timesheet entry instead of a clock button. Workday’s configuration options do not establish which explanation applies in a particular tenant.

What organizations should consider when setting up time tracking
Workday’s documented options include security domains, time-entry templates, worker eligibility, validations, approvals, calculation rules, and integrations. Its time-tracking capabilities can include overtime and premium calculations, meal and break validation, time accumulators, audit functions, exception handling, and payroll data integration. These are product capabilities; their presence does not by itself establish a particular compliance result, accuracy rate, or cost saving. Workday Time Tracking (UK)

When choosing a workflow, organizations can assess whether workers need individual mobile access, desktop entry, a shared kiosk, or an integrated physical clock; whether schedule or location restrictions are needed; whether event-based punches or grid entry suit the volume of work; and how time types, worktags, attestations, approvals, exceptions, payroll, and corrections should be handled. For a kiosk deployment, confirm app and device requirements with the Workday administrator before buying a tablet. Workday documentation also describes APIs and imports for physical clocks and third-party time systems, but it does not establish a current list of compatible clock models.
