Depending on what the employer enables, employees may punch at a time clock or kiosk, use the web app or a time sheet, or clock in through the Paylocity mobile app. To punch in on a phone, sign in with employer-provided credentials, open Punch, and tap Clock In.

If the punch is unavailable or denied, check that you are using the method and location your employer permits. Confirm that your account is active and contact your employer about access or configuration problems.
Paylocity says mobile punches can work with limited or no mobile service. Whether that capability is available to you depends on your employer’s setup. The app can also support clocking in and out from an Apple Watch. Paylocity’s time-collection overview describes mobile options.
Where else you may be able to record time
Your employer chooses and configures the collection methods. These options are not necessarily all available at every workplace.
| Method | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Physical time clock | Employees punch at a shared clock. Depending on the setup, options can include badge reading, photo capture, attestation, touchless methods, facial recognition, or fingerprint recognition. | Ask your employer which clock and identification method your workplace uses. Paylocity’s public information does not identify specific compatible clock models. |
| Kiosk tablet | A securely enclosed, preconfigured tablet can record punches and may capture employee photos and attestation responses. | Ask your employer where the kiosk is and how to use it. Paylocity does not specify a compatible consumer tablet or enclosure model. |
| Web app or time sheet | After logging in, employees can access clock-in and clock-out functions. Time sheets can also assign hours to jobs, projects, cost centers, and labor levels. | Check with your employer about web access and any required labor codes or assignments. |
| Mobile app | Employees can use time functions and, where enabled, schedules on a phone. Mobile punches may use geofencing and photo capture. | Confirm that your employer has enabled mobile punching and learn any location or device restrictions. |
These capabilities are described on Paylocity’s time-collection page.

Why a punch may be unavailable or rejected
Paylocity gives employers controls over how and where workers can punch. A problem may reflect an account or workplace rule rather than a fault with the phone.
- Location restrictions: Geofencing can limit mobile punches to an allowed area.
- Network restrictions: An employer may restrict punches by IP address.
- Clock restrictions: The employer may require a particular clock or other designated method.
- Account access: Mobile use requires an active account provided through the employer.
Start by checking the method and location your employer expects you to use. If the Punch option is missing, the punch is rejected, or you cannot sign in, contact your employer or Paylocity support for account-specific help. Paylocity’s app page describes its mobile app and punch guidance.
Does Paylocity track your location?
Paylocity describes geofencing as an option for mobile punches, alongside photo capture. If an employer enables a geofence, the punch can be checked against an allowed area. That does not establish that every employer enables geofencing or that every employee’s app has the same settings. Ask your employer what location controls apply to your account and when they are used.
What happens after employees submit time
Time tracking can feed into time-card review and payroll workflows. Paylocity says managers can review, edit, and approve time cards from mobile or desktop, and approved data can pass to Payroll. The employer’s configuration determines which actions and screens employees and managers can access. Paylocity’s Time & Attendance page describes time-card and attendance capabilities.

If a recorded punch or time-card entry looks wrong, follow your employer’s correction and approval process rather than assuming a punch automatically changes payroll.

Paylocity’s scheduling tools can include schedule visibility and updates, open-shift claims and swaps, mobile notifications, and rules for shifts, breaks, and overtime. The company’s June 15, 2026 update says May releases added enhanced scheduling templates for employee-assigned or open shifts. These product capabilities do not mean every employer has enabled them for every employee. Paylocity’s scheduling overview describes the tools, and its May 2026 product update gives the dated release information.
Choosing a time-tracking method as an employer
For employers configuring Paylocity, the right collection method depends on the work pattern and the controls the organization needs. Consider these factors before selecting or combining methods:
Recommended Free Tools
- Where employees work: Shared clocks or kiosks may suit on-site teams; mobile or web access can serve other work patterns, subject to employer controls.
- How punches are validated: Clock options may include badges, photos, attestation, or biometric methods; mobile punches may use geofencing and photo capture.
- Whether hours need allocation: Time sheets can assign hours to jobs, projects, cost centers, and labor levels.
- How managers handle time: Review correction and approval workflows, reporting, missed-punch and overtime alerts, and the payroll handoff.
- Whether scheduling is needed: Confirm whether schedule visibility, shift claims or swaps, and staffing rules are enabled for your organization.
Paylocity describes clocks that may be leased or purchased, but its public materials do not establish model-level compatibility for third-party clocks, consumer tablets, or enclosures. Confirm hardware requirements with Paylocity or the employer’s account representative. The public pricing page directs prospects to request pricing rather than listing a universal price for a particular module, deployment, or clock hardware.
Can you get Paylocity time tracking on your own?
No: downloading the app does not by itself provide access to an employer’s time-tracking system. Paylocity says use requires an active account through an employer. Employees should ask their employer to enable access or explain the workplace’s approved punch method; employers evaluating the product should request pricing and confirm which modules and hardware fit their deployment.
