Track the ICE U.S. Dollar Index (DXY, also called USDX) on a clearly labeled quote page or data feed, then record the quote’s timestamp, data status, instrument and Bitcoin benchmark. Use the index to understand broad dollar conditions—not as an automatic Bitcoin buy or sell signal. A useful comparison requires synchronized observations: DXY and Bitcoin trade on different schedules, and both the dollar quote and BTC price can differ by instrument or venue.
What DXY measures
DXY is ICE Data Indices’ geometrically averaged measure of the U.S. dollar against six currencies:

- Euro
- Japanese yen
- British pound
- Canadian dollar
- Swedish krona
- Swiss franc
ICE calculates the index from component-currency spot prices, using bid/offer midpoints. The basket’s composition changed only once, in January 1999, when the euro replaced several European currencies. ICE’s methodology says the currencies replaced by the euro represented a cumulative 57.6% exposure, which the euro retained in the revised basket. That history is why DXY is heavily influenced by euro-dollar movements.
ICE says USDX is calculated in real time every second from the component spot prices. That does not mean every website displays a live value: a distributor may show a delayed, end-of-day or historical series. The label attached to the quote matters as much as the number.

Choose the DXY instrument before you start
“DXY” can refer to a cash-style index quote or to a futures market. They are related, but they are not interchangeable observations.
| Instrument | What it represents | Timing and trading information | Best use before a Bitcoin purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash DXY/USDX quote | ICE’s six-currency geometric index calculated from component spot-price bid/offer midpoints | ICE documents calculation every second; the displayed feed can be real-time, delayed, end-of-day or historical | A spot-style reading of broad dollar direction |
| DX futures | A tradable ICE futures instrument that tracks the U.S. Dollar Index | The main futures symbol is DX; ICE says USDX futures trade 21 hours per day | When you specifically need a futures price, futures-market timing or a tradable contract |
| SDX futures | The mini USDX futures contract | ICE identifies SDX as the mini contract symbol; the applicable quote and session depend on the futures feed | When your data or trading plan calls for the mini contract rather than the main contract |
Pick one series and keep it consistent. Do not compare a delayed cash-index screenshot with a live futures candle and call the difference a market move.
How to set up a dependable tracking routine
1. Select an authoritative quote source
Use an ICE-labeled quote or an established data feed that identifies the series as DXY or USDX. ICE’s delivery options include ICE Connect, APIs and files, with real-time, delayed, end-of-day and historical choices. For a simple decision log, a quote page is sufficient if it clearly identifies the instrument and delay. For automated records, use a feed whose documentation states the update frequency and delivery status.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm whether the page shows cash DXY/USDX, DX futures or SDX futures.
- Check whether the value is real-time, delayed, end-of-day or historical.
- Note the page’s displayed time zone and convert the observation to UTC in your log.
- Keep the same instrument and feed for every comparison in a given analysis.
2. Record the quote status with every observation
A number without its status is difficult to interpret. Write “real-time,” “delayed,” “end-of-day” or “historical” next to each value. If the provider gives a delay length, record that too. A delayed quote can still be useful for studying a completed move, but it should not be treated as the current market level when deciding an entry.
3. Timestamp DXY in UTC
For each observation, record the UTC date and time, index level, daily change and whether the relevant market session is open. UTC avoids confusion when a chart, exchange or phone is using a local time zone. It also makes it possible to reproduce the comparison later.
At minimum, your log should contain:
| Field | What to write |
|---|---|
| UTC timestamp | The exact time of the observation |
| Instrument | Cash DXY/USDX, DX futures or SDX futures |
| Data status | Real-time, delayed, end-of-day or historical |
| DXY level | The quoted index value |
| Daily change | The displayed change for that series and session |
| Bitcoin reference | The BTC/USD venue or benchmark used alongside it |
| Market-session note | Whether the DXY source was updating at the observation time |
4. Define the Bitcoin price you will compare
Bitcoin is traded across multiple venues, so “the Bitcoin price” is not one universal quote. Choose a specific BTC/USD spot venue or a defined benchmark and write it beside the DXY observation. Do not switch venues midway through a chart simply because one shows a more convenient candle.

A Federal Register description of the CME Bitcoin benchmark defines a 3:00–4:00 p.m. Eastern observation window. It names Bitstamp, Coinbase, Gemini, itBit, Kraken and LMAX Digital as constituent platforms. If you use that benchmark, label it as the benchmark rather than as an instantaneous spot quote. If you use a single exchange’s spot price, record the exchange and the exact timestamp.
5. Align the observation windows
DXY and Bitcoin do not share identical venue schedules. Bitcoin markets operate continuously across venues, while ICE USDX futures trade 21 hours per day and the cash index is supplied according to the data feed’s publication schedule. A screenshot of DXY taken at one time and a Bitcoin price taken hours later can create an apparent relationship that is only a timing mismatch.
For a short-term comparison, capture both values as close together as your sources allow. For a daily comparison, use the same UTC cut-off every day. If you use the CME benchmark, compare it with a DXY observation taken during the benchmark’s defined window, and document the conversion from Eastern Time to UTC for the relevant date.
6. Examine a multi-session trend
A single tick does not establish a regime. Review several sessions and note whether DXY is making a sustained rise, a sustained fall or moving without a clear direction. Then examine the move alongside volatility, liquidity, interest rates and general risk sentiment. These factors can affect Bitcoin and the dollar at the same time, and they can also push them in different directions.
A sustained DXY rise indicates appreciation of the dollar against its basket. A sustained fall indicates depreciation against that basket. Neither description specifies what Bitcoin must do next. The index is a context variable, not a deterministic signal.

How to read DXY without overinterpreting it
A rising DXY
When DXY rises over several observations, the dollar is strengthening against the six-currency basket. That may coincide with tighter financial conditions or weaker appetite for risk, but the index itself does not identify the cause. Check the surrounding market information—rates, liquidity, volatility and risk sentiment—before deciding what the move means for your Bitcoin plan.
A falling DXY
A sustained decline means the dollar is weakening against the basket. That can occur during a period of easier financial conditions or stronger risk appetite, but those are interpretations to test against other evidence, not conclusions supplied by the index. A falling DXY is therefore not a standalone instruction to buy Bitcoin.
A choppy or flat DXY
Sideways movement provides less directional information. In that situation, give more weight to your entry rules, volatility limits and liquidity assumptions than to a marginal change in the index. Avoid inventing a threshold at which DXY supposedly flips from “safe” to “unsafe” for Bitcoin; no such universal level is established by the index methodology.

DXY is not the Federal Reserve’s dollar index
The Federal Reserve’s H.10 release includes broad, advanced foreign economy and emerging-market dollar indexes. Their currency weights are updated and revised annually, making them trade-oriented measures rather than fixed-weight copies of ICE’s DXY.
| Question | ICE DXY/USDX | Federal Reserve H.10 indexes |
|---|---|---|
| Basket | Six currencies: euro, yen, pound, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona and Swiss franc | Broad, advanced foreign economy and emerging-market series |
| Weighting approach | Fixed basket; composition changed in January 1999 when the euro replaced several currencies | Currency weights are updated and revised annually |
| Primary interpretation | A widely followed ICE dollar index against its six-currency basket | Trade-oriented dollar measures published by the Federal Reserve |
| Update and delivery | ICE says USDX is calculated every second; access may be real-time, delayed, end-of-day or historical depending on the feed | Published as H.10 index series with the Federal Reserve’s release schedule |
| Use in a comparison | Keep the exact DXY/USDX series named in every chart or note | Do not present an H.10 series as interchangeable with DXY |
Select one family of indexes for a time-series comparison. Switching from DXY to an H.10 series changes the basket and weighting method, so a change in the chart may reflect methodology rather than a new dollar move.
The Federal Reserve also states: “The value of the dollar is determined in foreign exchange markets, and neither the U.S. Treasury nor the Federal Reserve targets a level for the exchange rate.” The Board of Governors gave that explanation in an FAQ updated July 11, 2024. It also notes that dollar movements affect U.S. economic activity and prices and are considered in monetary-policy transmission. That policy context explains why traders watch dollar indexes; it does not turn DXY into a policy target or a Bitcoin forecast.

Cash DXY, futures and Bitcoin benchmarks: the comparison that actually works
| Comparison | Methodology | Update or observation timing | Tradable or informational role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash DXY vs. DX futures | Cash DXY uses component spot-price midpoints; DX is a futures contract tracking USDX | Cash USDX is calculated every second by ICE; DX futures trade 21 hours per day | Cash is a spot-style macro reading; DX is the tradable futures instrument |
| Real-time vs. delayed DXY | The underlying series can be the same, but the delivery status differs | ICE documents real-time, delayed, end-of-day and historical delivery options | Real-time supports current monitoring; delayed or historical data supports analysis only with its status labeled |
| ICE DXY vs. Federal Reserve H.10 | ICE uses a fixed six-currency basket; H.10 series use annually updated and revised trade-oriented weights | Each follows its publisher’s calculation and release schedule | They answer different questions and should not be substituted for one another |
| BTC spot vs. CME benchmark | Spot is a venue-specific BTC/USD quote; the CME benchmark uses a defined calculation window and named constituent platforms | The benchmark’s documented window is 3:00–4:00 p.m. Eastern; spot observations use the chosen venue’s timestamp | Spot is an immediate venue quote; the benchmark is a standardized reference for its stated window |
A practical pre-purchase workflow
- Write the instrument name. Put “cash DXY/USDX,” “DX futures” or “SDX futures” at the top of the note.
- Write the data status. Mark the quote real-time, delayed, end-of-day or historical, using the provider’s label.
- Capture the UTC timestamp. Record the index level and daily change at that moment.
- Capture Bitcoin on the same basis. Use one named BTC/USD venue or the defined CME benchmark, and record its timestamp or observation window.
- Review several sessions. Classify the DXY path as rising, falling or unclear rather than reacting to one candle.
- Check context. Review volatility, liquidity, rates and risk sentiment, and note whether they support or contradict your interpretation.
- Apply your trading plan. Decide the entry method, position size and risk limit independently of the DXY reading.
- Save the record. Keep the chart or data row with its instrument, source status and UTC time so you can audit the decision later.
Common tracking mistakes and how to correct them
Mixing cash DXY and DX futures
Symptom: Two charts show slightly different levels or changes, and the difference is treated as an error or a signal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCorrection: Identify each symbol before comparing it. Use cash DXY/USDX for a spot-style index reading and DX when your analysis specifically concerns futures. If both are displayed, label them separately instead of merging them into one series.
Using a delayed quote as if it were live
Symptom: An order is planned from a level that was printed minutes earlier or at the previous close.
Correction: Put the delay status beside the number. If the feed is delayed, treat it as a lagged observation and verify the current status through an appropriately labeled source before acting.
Comparing unsynchronized timestamps
Symptom: DXY appears to lead or lag Bitcoin, but the screenshots were taken at different times.

Correction: Use UTC timestamps and a common daily cut-off, or compare both values during the CME benchmark’s 3:00–4:00 p.m. Eastern window. Record whether the DXY source was updating when the Bitcoin value was captured.

Changing the Bitcoin venue during the analysis
Symptom: A move looks larger or smaller after switching exchanges.
Correction: Keep one BTC/USD venue for spot comparisons, or use the defined CME benchmark throughout. Bitcoin prices vary by venue, so a venue change changes the measurement.
Treating DXY as a trigger
Symptom: A single up or down move produces an immediate buy decision.

Substituting an H.10 index for DXY
Symptom: A chart labeled “dollar index” is assumed to be DXY even though it comes from the Federal Reserve’s H.10 release.
Correction: Name the publisher and series. H.10 indexes have annually updated and revised trade-oriented weights, while DXY is ICE’s fixed six-currency basket.
When this method is useful—and when it is not
DXY tracking is useful when you want a repeatable macro input: the same instrument, the same data status, the same timestamp convention and the same Bitcoin reference. It can help you describe whether the dollar environment is strengthening, weakening or unclear while you evaluate other market conditions.
It is less useful when the comparison is assembled from unlabeled screenshots, mixed instruments, different venues or different time windows. It is also insufficient as a complete Bitcoin strategy. The index does not set your acceptable loss, tell you how much capital to deploy or provide a guaranteed direction for Bitcoin.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Have you identified cash DXY/USDX, DX futures or SDX futures?
- Is the quote labeled real-time, delayed, end-of-day or historical?
- Did you record the exact UTC timestamp and daily change?
- Are you using one consistent BTC/USD venue or a defined benchmark?
- If using the CME benchmark, did you use its 3:00–4:00 p.m. Eastern window?
- Did you keep DXY separate from the Federal Reserve’s H.10 indexes?
- Did you examine several sessions instead of one threshold or candle?
- Are position size, entry method and risk limit set independently of DXY?
