Track shipbuilding as three separate time series: new contracts and orders (future work), completed vessel deliveries (yard output), and the fleet already in service (the stock). Add a fourth, separately documented layer for productive capacity. Keeping these signals apart prevents the most common errors, such as calling an order a delivery or treating a count of active yards as a capacity measurement.
A repeatable system starts by fixing the geography, vessel classes, size threshold, unit, status definition and observation date. Use UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) public aggregates for context, then add a specialist vessel register when you need named ships, yards, orderbook records or expected delivery dates. Preserve every source value and its definition so that changes, cancellations and delays can be audited rather than silently rewritten.

What you are actually measuring
Shipbuilding data answers different questions depending on whether you are looking at a flow, a stock or a capability. Put each observation into the correct category before comparing it with anything else.

Contracts and orders are future workload
An order is a signed or otherwise reported commitment for construction. Record the contract or order date, number of hulls, vessel type, builder, ordering party when disclosed, status and expected delivery date. An option, a memorandum of understanding, a firm contract, a postponed order and a cancelled order should not be treated as equivalent events. If the provider does not define those statuses, retain its wording and flag the ambiguity.

Deliveries are completed output
A delivery belongs in the output ledger only after the vessel has actually been completed and delivered according to the source’s definition. Capture the actual completion or delivery date, yard and the delivered vessel’s measure. Do not count an undelivered vessel merely because it appears in an orderbook, has a keel-laying date or has an estimated handover date.
The fleet is a stock at a point in time
A fleet snapshot describes vessels in service on a reference date. It is not a yearly production figure. Fleet totals can rise through deliveries, fall through scrapping or transfers, and change because of classification or ownership updates. Keep the reference date beside every fleet number.
Capacity is a capability, not a yard count
Capacity describes what facilities and their workforce can produce over a period and for specified ship types and sizes. UNCTAD warns in its Review of Maritime Transport 2025: “Assessing the number of shipyards and their capacity depends on wide-ranging factors, including the size and range of ships.” A yard count therefore cannot stand in for tonnes, berths, docks or annual output.

Fix the scope before collecting data
Write a one-sentence measurement specification before opening a dataset. For example: “Compare commercial container-ship orders and deliveries in East Asia by calendar year, measured in gross tonnage, for vessels of at least 100 GT.” This prevents a later chart from mixing unlike populations.
- Geography: decide whether “country” means the builder’s location, the owner’s domicile, the flag, or another classification.
- Sector: state whether naval vessels are excluded and whether the series covers commercial ships only.
- Vessel class and size: name the type and threshold; a tanker, bulk carrier and offshore vessel have different construction profiles.
- Time window: distinguish a calendar-year flow from a beginning-of-year or in-period snapshot.
- Unit: choose vessel count, gross tonnage (GT), compensated gross tonnage (CGT) or deadweight tonnes (DWT), and never remove the unit from a displayed number.
- Status rules: define how you treat options, cancellations, postponements, conversions and estimated delivery dates.
- Cutoff date: record when the data was downloaded or viewed, not only the period it describes.
Build three ledgers and a capacity file
A spreadsheet, database or data warehouse should keep separate tables for orders, deliveries and fleet stock. A fourth file stores capacity evidence without pretending that it is comparable to an order count.
Order ledger
| Field | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Vessel or project identifier | Stable key for later updates; retain the source name and any IMO number. |
| Builder and facility | Separates a corporate group from the physical yard where work occurs. |
| Vessel type and size | Enables like-for-like comparisons. |
| Ordering party | Shows who placed the order when reported. |
| Order or contract date | Anchors the workload flow. |
| Status | Use the provider’s defined category; preserve the original text. |
| Quantity and measure | Store vessel count plus GT, CGT or another reported measure. |
| Expected delivery | Store the current estimate and retain prior estimates for slippage analysis. |
| Source and update date | Makes each revision auditable. |
Delivery ledger
Use one row per completed vessel or an explicitly aggregated record. Include the actual delivery date, builder, facility, vessel type, delivered measure, source and any caveat about whether “delivery” means acceptance, completion or another event in that provider’s methodology.
Fleet snapshot
Store the reference date, flag or ownership basis, vessel type, size threshold and unit. A fleet record should identify whether it is a count of all vessels, only merchant ships, or another population. Never join a 1,000-GT fleet series to a 100-GT construction series without labeling the difference.

Start with UNCTAD’s public maritime statistics
UNCTAD’s maritime data hub links datasets for ships built by country and merchant fleets by flag, type and ownership, with metadata describing scope and definitions. Its public series are useful for reproducible country and global context, but they do not constitute a complete, live, yard-level orderbook.
The shipbuilding and recycling statistics cover commercial ships of 100 GT and above. Some fleet ownership comparisons use ships of 1,000 GT and above; the threshold must appear in your table or chart title. UNCTAD’s figures are snapshots tied to specified reference dates, not a continuous contract feed.
When extracting a value, copy the observation date, publication or update date, population, geography, vessel type and unit into your metadata table. Keep the original series name so another analyst can reproduce the selection.

For ship-by-ship monitoring, commercial fleet registers can complement public aggregates. Clarksons Research describes its World Fleet Register and Shipping Intelligence Network as covering vessel and fleet information, including shipbuilding-related details. Such systems can support named-vessel orderbooks, builder records and expected delivery tracking.
Coverage is not automatically identical across products or subscription tiers. Before relying on a field, confirm whether it includes firm orders, options, cancellations, postponed contracts, estimated delivery windows and historical revisions. Record the provider’s definition and update cadence next to your extracted value; do not infer a common status taxonomy where none is documented.
A repeatable tracking workflow
- Write the measurement specification. State the question, period, geography, commercial or naval scope, vessel classes, size threshold, unit and cutoff date.
- Create identifiers. Use an IMO number when available, plus a normalized vessel name, builder and facility. Keep the source’s original spelling in a separate field.
- Load orders into the order ledger. Capture order date, quantity, type, measure, status and current expected delivery. Mark options and unconfirmed announcements rather than silently upgrading them to firm contracts.
- Load completed vessels separately. Enter actual delivery or completion dates only after the source records completion. If a source reports a batch, retain its aggregation rule.
- Load fleet snapshots. Attach the exact reference date and threshold. Treat the result as stock, not output.
- Attach capacity evidence. Add facility, workforce, berth, dock, production-line or stated annual-capacity information with its source and date. If no physical measure is available, say that capacity is not stated rather than estimating it from orders.
- Version the estimates. When an expected delivery moves, keep the former date, new date and observation date. This creates a measurable schedule-slippage history.
- Reconcile statuses. Match later deliveries to their originating orders where identifiers permit. Record cancellations, substitutions, conversions and split contracts as events, not as unexplained changes in totals.
- Validate units and populations. Check that every aggregation combines the same measure, vessel class, threshold and geography. Convert units only when the source provides a defensible conversion basis; otherwise display separate series.
- Publish an audit trail. Place the observation date, source, update date, definition, scope and unit beside every chart or table.
Understand GT, CGT, DWT and vessel counts
Gross tonnage (GT) is a measure of the ship’s enclosed internal volume and is used in UNCTAD shipbuilding and recycling activity statistics. Deadweight tonnes (DWT) indicate cargo-carrying capacity, so DWT is useful for describing the carrying capability of a fleet, not the physical volume of a shipyard’s work. Compensated gross tonnage (CGT) may appear in industry reporting to reflect the relative effort required to build different ship types.
Vessel count, GT, CGT and DWT answer different questions. A market with fewer, very large ships can have more GT or DWT than a market with many small ships. Show the unit in the column heading, chart label and downloadable data.

| Measure | Best used for | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| Vessel count | Number of hulls, yards or fleet entries | Hides differences in vessel size and complexity. |
| GT | Shipbuilding and recycling activity by internal volume | Not a cargo-capacity measure. |
| CGT | Relative construction effort across ship types when supplied by the source | Do not merge with GT without labeling the methodology. |
| DWT | Fleet cargo-carrying capacity | Describes the fleet stock, not completed yard output. |
Measure shipyard capacity without overclaiming
Separate installed capability from observed output
A dock that can physically accept a large vessel, a production line designed for a vessel class and the number of ships delivered last year are different observations. Label each as installed, planned, practical or observed. A new facility announced in a press release is not current productive capacity until its operating status and measurement are established.

Track constraints at facility level
Useful fields include dry-dock or berth length and width, crane limits, block-assembly lines, launch method, workforce, shift pattern, supplier bottlenecks and the vessel classes accepted. These details explain why two yards with the same number of deliveries may have very different ability to take on another large order.
Use orderbook as workload, not capacity
An orderbook can show how much future work is contracted, but it does not reveal maximum throughput. A yard may carry a large orderbook while operating below physical capability because of labor, finance, materials, dry-dock access or schedule constraints. Conversely, a small orderbook may reflect a temporary lull rather than a small facility.
When capacity is not stated
Report “capacity not stated” and show the available proxy, such as active orders or completed GT, in a different column. Do not turn an activity-based yard count into a percentage of global capacity.
Compare countries, yards and sources on like-for-like axes
Use the following checklist before ranking two markets or providers:
- Are you comparing order volume with order volume, or orders with completed deliveries?
- Are both figures in vessel count, GT, CGT or DWT?
- Do both populations use the same commercial-vessel definition and minimum size?
- Are the vessel types and size bands comparable?
- Is one number a national aggregate while the other is a single-yard orderbook?
- Do the snapshots share a reference date and update frequency?
- Are options, cancellations and postponed contracts treated the same way?
- Does either source measure physical productive capacity, or do both merely report observed orders and deliveries?
Only after these checks should you calculate shares, growth rates or rankings. If a difference remains, explain the definition rather than presenting a false precision.
Reconcile orders with later deliveries
Ship construction commonly spans multiple years, so a calendar year’s contracts will not normally equal that year’s deliveries. Compare an order cohort with deliveries in later periods, grouped by vessel type and size. Keep the original order date and each expected-delivery revision so you can distinguish normal lead time from slippage.
For every order that does not become a delivery, assign the best-supported outcome: still active, delivered, cancelled, postponed, converted or unknown. “Unknown” is preferable to assuming cancellation. If a contract covers several vessels and only some are delivered, split the quantity and retain the parent contract identifier.
Current benchmarks and how to read them
UNCTAD reported that 91% of ships completed in 2025 by gross tonnage were built in China, the Republic of Korea or Japan. The figure was published by UNCTAD in 2026, with the page updated 18 June 2026, and attributes the underlying insight to UNCTADstat and Clarksons Research. It is a GT-based concentration measure, not a count of yards or a measure of installed capacity.

UNCTAD’s Review of Maritime Transport 2025 reported that China held 63.7% of the global orderbook by gross tonnage at the start of 2025, based on Clarksons Research. This is an orderbook snapshot, so it should not be described as China’s share of deliveries or fleet ownership.
The same review reported that about 348 operational shipyards worldwide secured new contracts or completed deliveries in 2024. Because this is an activity-based count, it is not a standardized inventory of productive capacity; ship size and range affect both the count and its interpretation.
UNCTAD’s 2026 statistics put the global merchant fleet at around 116,000 vessels of at least 100 GT at the start of 2026, including around 62,000 vessels over 1,000 GT. These are fleet-stock counts, not annual construction totals.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWorld fleet carrying capacity reached 2.5 billion DWT on 1 January 2026, an increase of 85 million DWT from the prior year. DWT expresses cargo-carrying capacity, so this number should be kept separate from GT-based shipbuilding output and from the number of hulls delivered.
Design a dashboard that exposes definitions
A useful dashboard has separate panels rather than one composite “shipbuilding” number:
- Orders: new contracts by year, vessel type, builder country and GT or CGT, with active, optional, postponed and cancelled statuses shown separately.
- Deliveries: completed vessels by delivery year, builder and unit, with the actual completion date.
- Orderbook: vessels and tonnage outstanding at a stated snapshot date, including expected delivery windows.
- Fleet stock: vessels and DWT at the stated reference date, with the size threshold visible.
- Capacity evidence: facility-level fields and source dates, never a derived capacity percentage unless the denominator is explicitly documented.
- Data quality: a panel listing records with unknown status, missing identifiers, conflicting dates or unmatched units.
Every visual should have a footnote containing source, publication or update date, observation date, population, geography, vessel scope, unit and status definition. This is more informative than a generic “latest data” label.
Common failure modes and fixes
Calling an order a delivery
Symptom: the orderbook and annual output are identical in a chart. Fix: move orders and completed vessels into separate ledgers and require an actual delivery date for output.
Ranking capacity by yard count
Symptom: a country with more listed yards is declared to have greater capacity. Fix: present the count as active-yard activity and add facility, workforce, berth or production-line evidence before making a capacity claim.
Best Value
Mixing units
Symptom: GT, CGT and DWT appear in one unlabeled total. Fix: split the series, label every value and preserve the provider’s measure.
Ignoring thresholds
Symptom: a 100-GT construction series is compared with a 1,000-GT ownership series as though they cover the same fleet. Fix: put the threshold in the title and compare only matched populations or explain the difference.
Using stale expected dates
Symptom: a delivery forecast is treated as fixed. Fix: save each estimate with its observation date and calculate slippage from the revision history.
Hiding missing definitions
Symptom: “confirmed order” appears without explaining whether options or memoranda are included. Fix: quote the provider’s status definition, or mark the field as not stated.
Set an update and review cadence
Use a faster cycle for live order and delivery monitoring than for structural capacity research. At each refresh, record the provider’s update date, download date and last-seen value. Re-run identifier matching so renamed vessels, yard ownership changes and split contracts do not create duplicate hulls.
At period end, freeze a snapshot before loading revisions. This allows you to answer both “what was known then?” and “what is the current status?” without rewriting history. When a public aggregate is revised, retain the prior published value and explain the revision in the metadata log.
Choose the right level of detail
For a global trend, UNCTAD’s public aggregates may be sufficient. For a country comparison, combine those aggregates with a clear threshold, unit and reference date. For a named-vessel or named-yard question, use a specialist register and validate its status fields. For an investment or supply-chain decision, add facility-level capacity evidence and document the uncertainty around labor, berth availability and schedule risk.
The practical rule is simple: use orders to measure future workload, deliveries to measure completed output, fleet data to measure the operating stock and facility evidence to discuss capacity. Keeping those four layers distinct produces a tracker that can survive cancellations, delayed handovers, changing definitions and new reporting periods.
