To check an RBI liquidity injection, absorption or repo auction, start with the latest Money Market Operations press release in the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Press Releases archive. Use the release date to find the newest document, then use the operation date in its tables. In the RBI OPERATIONS section, record every repo, reverse repo, fine-tuning operation, Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) and Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) row. Keep transactions conducted on that operation date separate from earlier transactions that are still outstanding. Finally, cross-check the broader Liquidity Operations by RBI table and calculate the signed net effect using RBI’s formula: Net liquidity = Repo + MSF + SLF − Reverse Repo − SDF.
This method gives you the auction date, tenor, maturity date, amount in ₹ crore, applicable or cut-off rate, direction of liquidity and the difference between a new transaction and an open one. It also preserves enough context to compare releases over time without mistaking a historical rate or an outstanding balance for today’s auction.

Where RBI publishes the numbers
The authoritative starting point is the RBI Press Releases archive. Find the newest release titled Money Market Operations as on [date] (the wording may vary slightly). Two dates matter:

Use the publication date to identify the newest release, but use the operation date when you label a transaction in a spreadsheet or chart. A release posted after midnight can therefore describe the previous business day’s operation.

A dependable daily workflow
- Open the Press Releases archive. Search or filter for the latest Money Market Operations release. Do not assume the most recently displayed page covers the calendar day you are interested in; read the operation date printed in the release.
- Write down both dates. Create separate fields for publication date and operation date. This prevents a release date from being misread as an auction date.
- Read the RBI OPERATIONS section. Capture each row for fixed-rate and variable-rate LAF repo or reverse repo, fine-tuning operations, MSF and SDF. Do not skip a row because its amount is small: several facilities can operate on the same day.
- Capture the row fields. Record auction or operation date, tenor in days, maturity date, amount in ₹ crore and the current or cut-off rate in percent. Keep the rate exactly as displayed, including decimal places.
- Split new and open transactions. Put transactions conducted for the operation date in a “today’s operations” group. Put earlier transactions that have not matured in an “outstanding operations” group. An outstanding two-day repo is not a new auction simply because it appears in the latest release.
- Check the broader liquidity table. In Liquidity Operations by RBI, review repo, reverse repo, variable-rate operations, MSF, SDF and outright open-market-operation (OMO) sales or purchases. This table provides the signed daily effect and a combined outstanding figure that the individual rows may not make obvious.
- Record the sign and unit. Enter injections as positive and absorptions as negative, while retaining RBI’s ₹ crore unit. Never convert to rupees, lakh crore or another currency without adding a separate converted column.
- Archive the source. Save the release URL, publication date, operation date, rate, amount and unit with your notes or spreadsheet row. A source reference is essential when RBI later publishes a corrected or expanded table.
Suggested tracking columns
A practical log can use these columns in this order:
- Publication date
- Operation date
- Facility and operation type
- Direction (injection or absorption)
- Auction date
- Tenor (days)
- Maturity date
- Amount (₹ crore)
- Current or cut-off rate (%)
- Status (today’s or outstanding)
- Source release
- Notes on OMO sales or purchases
Keep one row per operation rather than combining all facilities into a daily total. A second daily-summary sheet can then add the rows without destroying the maturity and rate information.
How to read each field
Auction date
The auction date is when bids were accepted or the operation was conducted. For a fixed-rate facility, the date identifies the transaction even though there may be no competitive cut-off. For a variable-rate auction, it identifies the auction whose cut-off rate you are recording.
Tenor
Tenor is the number of days until contractual maturity. A one-day and a two-day transaction can both appear in the same release, but their liquidity effects roll off on different dates. Keep the number as an integer of days rather than replacing it with a label such as “overnight.”
Maturity date
The maturity date is the contractual return date. It lets you forecast when an injection or absorption will cease to be outstanding. If the maturity date is later than the operation date, classify the row as open until it matures or RBI reports its return.
Amount
Amounts are reported in ₹ crore. The amount is the size of that operation, not automatically the system-wide net position. Several rows can offset one another, so add them only after assigning the correct sign and status.
Current or cut-off rate
Use the current rate for a fixed-rate facility and the auction cut-off rate for a variable-rate operation. The rate is a percentage. Keep the rate tied to its facility and operation date; a rate from an earlier outstanding transaction should not be presented as today’s auction rate.

Today’s operations and outstanding operations
“Today’s operations” covers transactions conducted for the operation date in the release. “Outstanding operations” covers earlier transactions that remain active. The distinction is the key to avoiding double counting: an outstanding transaction can be listed again on several releases while it remains open.
Facility types and what they contribute to liquidity
The RBI tables use several facilities. The sign convention in the published net-liquidity formula tells you how to classify the main entries.
Repo
Repo appears with a positive sign in RBI’s formula. Treat the reported repo amount as an injection component when calculating net liquidity. Note its tenor and maturity because the injection is temporary.
Reverse repo
Reverse repo appears with a negative sign. It is an absorption component in the calculation. A large reverse-repo amount can therefore offset repo or other positive entries on the same date.
Variable-rate operations and fine-tuning operations
A variable-rate operation has an auction cut-off rate rather than a single pre-announced fixed rate. Fine-tuning operations are listed separately in the RBI OPERATIONS section. Record their facility, auction date, tenor, amount and rate exactly as shown; do not merge them into a generic repo line if the release distinguishes them.
Marginal Standing Facility (MSF)
MSF is added in the formula and therefore contributes to the positive side of net liquidity. The release can show different MSF rows for different tenors, so preserve each row and its maturity date.
Standing Deposit Facility (SDF)
SDF is subtracted in the formula and contributes to absorption. Separate one-day and longer-tenor SDF entries rather than treating the displayed total as a single maturity.

SLF and outright OMO entries
The formula also includes SLF: Repo + MSF + SLF − Reverse Repo − SDF. The broader liquidity table can additionally list outright OMO sales or purchases. Record those OMO entries in their own columns and use the signed total RBI publishes; do not silently insert OMO into the formula unless the release explicitly includes it in that total.

Calculating net liquidity correctly
RBI’s published wording is: Net liquidity is calculated as Repo+MSF+SLF-Reverse Repo-SDF.
The plus signs represent injection components and the minus signs represent absorption components. A positive result means net injection; a negative result means net absorption. RBI reports the result in ₹ crore.
For a spreadsheet, store each component as a signed number or maintain separate positive and negative columns. A transparent calculation is:
Net liquidity = Repo + MSF + SLF - Reverse repo - SDF
Calculate at least three separate totals when the release provides them:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Today’s operations: only transactions conducted for the operation date.
- Outstanding operations: earlier transactions that remain active.
- Combined outstanding including today’s operations: the open position after adding the new day’s transactions.
Do not add the combined figure to either of the first two figures; it already incorporates them.
Worked official example: 7 June 2025
The RBI release Money Market Operations as on June 07, 2025 illustrates the distinction between new and open transactions. It reports the following net-liquidity figures:
| Measure | Net liquidity | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Today’s operations | −₹1,97,212 crore | Net absorption from transactions conducted for the operation date |
| Outstanding operations | −₹47,714.14 crore | Net absorption from earlier transactions still active |
| Outstanding operations including today’s operations | −₹2,44,926.14 crore | Combined open position after adding the day’s transactions |
All three figures are negative, so each represents net absorption. The combined number is not a fourth auction; it is the outstanding position after today’s activity is included.
The same release lists these MSF and SDF rows:
| Facility | Amount | Rate | Tenor |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSF | ₹3 crore | 5.75% | One day |
| MSF | ₹55 crore | 5.75% | Two days |
| SDF | ₹1,95,976 crore | 5.25% | One day |
| SDF | ₹1,294 crore | 5.25% | Two days |
These are historical observations from that release, not current rates. They demonstrate why a tracker needs separate rows for each tenor: the one-day and two-day amounts mature on different dates even though the facility and rate are the same.

Those times and eligibility rules are historical scheme details, not a promise that every current operation follows them. RBI can amend operational notices, so check the latest notice attached to the operation before treating 10:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m. or same-day settlement as current. When comparing two years of data, store the notice date and avoid assuming that an unchanged facility name implies unchanged timing or eligibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Comparing several operations or days
When you follow more than one release, use the same six comparison axes each time:
- Direction: injection versus absorption, based on RBI’s sign convention.
- Facility: repo, reverse repo, variable-rate operation, MSF, SDF or OMO.
- Tenor and maturity concentration: whether liquidity is concentrated in one-day, two-day or longer maturities.
- Amount: the ₹ crore size of each row and the daily total.
- Rate: current or auction cut-off rate compared with the policy corridor in force on that date.
- Status: today’s transactions versus earlier outstanding transactions.
A useful dashboard can show the daily signed total on one chart and the maturity schedule on another. The first answers “Is the system being injected or absorbed today?” The second answers “When will the current open position roll off?” Keeping those questions separate prevents a large outstanding balance from obscuring a small new auction.
Practical spreadsheet checks
Check the arithmetic
Recalculate the formula from the component rows and compare it with RBI’s published total. If your result differs, check whether you omitted SLF, used an unsigned reverse-repo or SDF amount, or mixed today’s and outstanding rows.
Check the units
Every amount should carry the ₹ crore label. A value of 1,95,976 means ₹1,95,976 crore, not ₹1,95,976. Conversions to rupees or lakh crore belong in a separate field with an explicit multiplier.
Check the dates
Sort by operation date, not by the date on which you downloaded the release. Then verify that every open row has a maturity date later than or equal to its operation date.
Check the rate type
Label a fixed-rate entry as “current rate” and a variable-rate auction entry as “cut-off rate.” This avoids comparing two numbers as though they were produced by the same auction mechanism.

Common mistakes and how to fix them
Mistaking the release date for the operation date
Symptom: your daily series appears one day late or contains duplicate dates. Fix: retain both fields and use the operation date for analysis.
Best Value
Counting outstanding transactions as new auctions
Symptom: your calculated daily amount is larger than RBI’s “today’s operations” figure. Fix: classify rows by the date they were conducted, then calculate a separate outstanding total.
Dropping the negative sign
Symptom: a day that RBI reports as absorption appears to be an injection in your chart. Fix: enter reverse repo and SDF as negative components, or apply the subtraction explicitly in the formula.
Combining tenors
Symptom: you cannot tell when liquidity will mature. Fix: preserve one row per tenor and maturity date, even when the facility and rate match.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Treating a historical rate as current
Symptom: a 2025 example is quoted as today’s policy rate. Fix: attach the operation date and release title to every rate and describe the figure as historical when it is used for illustration.
Assuming the original auction timetable still applies
Symptom: a bid deadline or result time conflicts with a newer RBI notice. Fix: follow the latest operational notice for that facility and retain the older timetable only as historical context.
Building a repeatable monitoring routine
For a once-a-day check, open the Press Releases archive at a consistent time, identify the newest Money Market Operations release, and append only rows whose source release you have saved. If no new release has appeared, do not manufacture a zero: mark your log as awaiting the next publication and leave the prior outstanding rows unchanged.
For a longer-term series, maintain three views:
- Operation ledger: one row for every facility, tenor and date.
- Daily net view: RBI’s signed totals for today’s, outstanding and combined operations.
- Maturity view: open amounts grouped by maturity date.
When a later release shows that an earlier transaction has matured, close the original row rather than deleting it. Historical rows explain why the outstanding total changed and preserve an audit trail.

The tables show the size, direction, tenor, maturity and rate of the operations RBI reports. They do not, by themselves, explain why a particular institution bid, predict the next auction or establish a current policy decision. Use the policy-corridor comparison only as context for the rate on that date, and avoid inferring a future operation from one unusually large or small row.
The June 7, 2025 example is useful for learning the layout, but its rates and amounts are not a current market quote. Every time you publish or circulate a number, include its operation date, facility, unit and whether it is today’s or outstanding activity.
Bottom line for tracking RBI operations
The reliable process is simple but strict: find the newest RBI Money Market Operations release, distinguish publication and operation dates, transcribe every RBI OPERATIONS row, separate today’s from outstanding transactions, then verify the signed totals in the Liquidity Operations by RBI table. Apply Repo + MSF + SLF − Reverse Repo − SDF, keep all amounts in ₹ crore, and treat auction timings as changeable unless the latest operational notice confirms them. That produces a traceable record of both the day’s liquidity direction and the open transactions that will affect future days.
