You can monitor a store page without an API by using a browser’s built-in price tracking, a hosted website monitor, or a small scraper for a few stable public pages. Start with the exact product page, track the specific price or page area if possible, record a baseline, and verify every alert on the live store page before acting.
Choose a tracking method
The right option depends on whether the browser recognizes the product, whether the page is public, and how much maintenance you can accept.

Use built-in browser tracking first
Chrome Help documents a workflow on Android: open a product page in Chrome, choose “Track prices,” then manage tracked products and notifications in Chrome’s settings. Chrome can also show price-drop badges on open Android tabs. Google says those discount badges are available only to users in the US; that limitation applies to the badges, not necessarily every tracking function. Device, browser version, region, and retailer support can vary, so check Google’s current Chrome price tracking instructions for your platform.

Use a hosted page monitor
A hosted monitor checks a URL on a schedule and can send an alert when the page or a selected area changes. Some services describe options for selecting page elements and receiving alerts by email or messaging integrations. These are vendor-documented capabilities, not independently verified performance. For example, PageCrawl’s Chrome Web Store listing describes page and price monitoring, element selection, and alert channels. Wachete and PageChange also describe scheduled page monitoring.

Check page access before choosing a service. DiffScout’s documentation says it monitors publicly accessible URLs, not login-protected pages. PageChange warns that bot protection, CAPTCHA challenges, and login walls can prevent automated checks; PageCrawl’s listing describes support for JavaScript-heavy and login-protected pages, but that remains a vendor claim.
Use a targeted scraper or a manual record
If you need to watch only a handful of stable public product URLs, a small script can retrieve each page periodically, extract a price, save timestamped observations, compare them with the previous value or a threshold, and send a notification. Eurostat’s Practical guidelines on web scraping for the HICP describe targeted scraping of predetermined products as a useful starting approach for that statistical use case. The guidance also notes that site changes can break scrapers and CAPTCHA challenges are an obstacle. For occasional personal checks, a dated spreadsheet and recurring manual review may be simpler than maintaining a script.

Set up a useful price alert
- Open the canonical product URL. Choose the exact size, color, seller, or other variant you intend to buy. A page for the wrong variant can produce a technically accurate but irrelevant alert.
- Define the price you care about. Decide whether to track the displayed price, a selected variant’s price, or a threshold crossing. Keep list price, discounted price, shipping, taxes, coupons, and checkout total distinct.
- Record a baseline. Note the date and time, currency, URL and variant, and visible price. Save a screenshot or price history if you need to audit later changes.
- Target the price field or a narrow page area. If the monitor supports selecting an element or text region, use it. Watching the whole page can create alerts for unrelated edits, such as reviews or promotional text.
- Choose a check interval and threshold. Match the schedule to the decision you need to make. Faster checks may use more quota on some services, and no single interval is best for every product or monitor.
- Enable and test an alert channel. Confirm that a test notification reaches the intended inbox or messaging channel.
- Verify the live page when an alert arrives. Confirm the product, variant, currency, and location on the store itself before relying on the reported price.
- Check the rules that apply to the site. Review the store’s terms and relevant rules in your jurisdiction before automating collection. The sources cited here do not establish permission for any particular retailer.
Compare monitors by the details that affect reliability
Do not choose on the promise of “price tracking” alone. Compare the capabilities that determine whether a service can read your page and deliver an alert you can trust.

For example, DiffScout documents public-URL monitoring and excludes login-protected pages. PageChange documents possible blocking by CAPTCHA, bot protections, or login walls. Confirm current features, limits, and privacy terms directly with any provider; product listings and documentation describe what vendors say their tools do, not an independent performance test.

Why alerts can be wrong or incomplete
- The displayed amount may not be your checkout total. A snapshot can miss shipping, taxes, coupons, account-specific pricing, geographic pricing, or later checkout steps.
- The wrong variant may be monitored. Prices can differ by size, color, seller, or location even on the same product page.
- Extraction can break. A redesign or change to a page’s structure may cause a selected price field or scraper to stop working. Eurostat’s guidance notes that site changes can cause scraper malfunctions.
- Whole-page monitoring can be noisy. A review, banner, or other unrelated change may trigger a notification even when the price is unchanged.
- Automated access can be blocked. Login walls, CAPTCHA, and anti-bot defenses can prevent a monitor from retrieving the page.
- A quiet inbox does not prove the price stayed the same. The monitor may have missed a check, lost access, or stopped reading the correct field. Use stored history and periodically inspect the live page.
A price monitor reports what it can retrieve from the page, not a guaranteed purchase price. Treat alerts as prompts to check the store, not as a substitute for confirming the offer.
