To use Google Drive files offline on Windows, open the Google Drive folder in File Explorer, right-click the files or folders you need, and choose Offline access > Available offline. This applies to ordinary files in Drive for desktop’s streaming mode. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides require a separate offline setup in Drive on the web.
Set up Drive for desktop on Windows

If Drive for desktop is not installed, follow Google’s Windows installation instructions, download and open

Open Drive for desktop from the Windows system tray. In streaming mode, open the Google Drive folder in File Explorer.

Make files and folders available offline

In File Explorer, select the file or folder you want. You can select more than one item.

Right-click the selection and choose Offline access > Available offline. A green check indicates an item is marked for offline access.

Wait for the files to finish downloading before disconnecting from the internet. Offline copies use space on your computer. Marking a folder offline can also include its contents and future items added to it.

Keep Drive for desktop running and your account connected. In streaming mode, closing the app or signing out makes cached offline files inaccessible; disconnecting the account removes streamed offline files.

Choose streaming or mirroring
Drive for desktop offers two ways to keep My Drive files on a Windows PC. The choice affects local storage, which files are available offline, and whether the app must be running.

The computer uses space for opened, cached, recently or frequently used files, and files explicitly marked offline. | Only items marked offline are guaranteed to be available without a connection, and Drive for desktop must be running. | Useful when conserving disk space matters and you can keep the app open. Shared drives can be streamed. |
| Mirror files | My Drive is downloaded to a local folder and also kept in the cloud. | My Drive files are available offline, including when Drive for desktop is not running. | Useful when you need all of My Drive locally and have enough disk space. Shared drives cannot be mirrored. |

Change the My Drive mode

Open Drive for desktop and go to Settings > Preferences.

Choose Folders from Drive; some versions may label this section Google Drive.

Select Stream files or Mirror files. Before switching, make sure recent changes have finished syncing.
If removing a previous mirrored folder on Windows, quit Drive for desktop first and verify that files have synced. Deleting the folder before uploads finish can lose unsynced files.
Make Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides available offline
The File Explorer command is for streamed files other than Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Set up offline access for those Google formats in Drive on the web while you are online.

In Drive settings, enable the option to create, open, and edit recent Docs, Sheets, and Slides on the device while offline.

To save a specific file for offline use, right-click it in Drive on the web and select Make available offline.
After you reconnect, changes sync. Google notes that new changes can overwrite previous changes and that edits appear in version history. See Google’s instructions for using Drive files offline on a computer.

Fix common offline-access problems

“Available offline” is missing: The option appears in streaming mode when Drive for desktop is running. It is not shown in mirroring mode because mirrored files are already stored locally.

An offline file will not open: In streaming mode, check that Drive for desktop is running and your account is still connected.

Marking files offline fails: Check available disk space, internet connection, and file permissions. For a large selection, try smaller batches; Google notes that errors such as “too many open files” can occur.

Shared-drive files will not mirror: Shared drives are supported for streaming, not mirroring.

You are switching modes or removing a mirrored folder: Wait for syncing to finish. On Windows, quit Drive for desktop before removing the old mirrored folder.
