PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf your parent refuses mental health treatment, start with a calm, private conversation about what they are experiencing and what they might accept—not an argument over whether they are ill. Offer one small choice, such as talking with a primary-care clinician or making a call together. If someone faces immediate physical danger, call 911; for urgent concern or uncertainty, call or text 988 for crisis guidance.
Start with a conversation, not a diagnosis
Choose a private moment when neither of you is rushed or in the middle of a conflict. Describe what you have noticed in concrete terms—such as a recent change in sleep, pulling away from people, missed obligations, or something they said that worried you. Avoid labeling your parent or insisting that they accept a diagnosis.

Then ask what feels difficult or unsafe about getting help. Listen to the answer before suggesting a solution. Your parent may be worried about cost, privacy, medication, stigma, or losing control over decisions. Understanding the concern gives you a better chance of finding a first step they will consider.

Offer a small, choice-based first step
A parent who is not ready for therapy or psychiatric care may still agree to something less daunting. Offer a few realistic options and let them choose, rather than presenting an ultimatum.
- Ask whether they would talk with a primary-care clinician about how they have been feeling.
- Offer to sit beside them while they make one call or look through provider options.
- Ask whether they want you to accompany them to an appointment.
- Suggest reviewing local care options together without committing to treatment.
Keep ordinary contact going, too. Follow through on practical offers and make time together that is not focused on treatment. Repeatedly turning every conversation into a plea for help can make your parent less willing to talk.

Know what you can—and cannot—decide for them
Adults generally have the right to make their own treatment decisions. You can encourage care, offer practical support, and share observations with clinicians, but you should not assume you can require routine treatment. Involuntary evaluation or hospitalization is a legal process, usually associated with a crisis; the rules and thresholds vary by state. NAMI describes these decisions as complex because they must balance treatment needs with civil liberties. NAMI: How to Help a Loved One

Choose the right crisis response
Suicidal statements, threats to harm someone, self-injury, hallucinations, and severe isolation can be signs of a crisis. They do not establish a diagnosis by themselves, but they warrant attention to urgency. If you are uncertain what to do, you can contact 988 yourself for guidance even if your parent will not call.
| Option | When to use it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Call or text 988 | You have an urgent concern or are unsure how serious the situation is. | A trained crisis counselor can help you think through next steps and connect you with local crisis resources. A family member may call for advice. |
| Call 911 | There is immediate physical danger. | Be clear that it is a mental health emergency and describe specific behavior. A 911 call results in a police response; where possible, ask whether a crisis-intervention-trained responder is available. |
| Ask about mobile crisis | Your parent is unwilling or unable to travel, and an on-scene response may be appropriate. | Ask 988 or your city or county behavioral health agency whether a team is available. Availability, eligibility, and authority vary by location, so a response is not guaranteed. |
| Emergency department or walk-in psychiatric service | Your parent is willing and can be transported safely for an urgent assessment. | A local service can assess urgent needs. County crisis-stabilization options may also be available. |
When speaking with responders, report what you have observed and when it happened. Share immediate safety concerns directly; do not speculate about a diagnosis or promise that a particular response will occur. Make a crisis plan before one is needed
If your parent is willing, make a short plan together while things are relatively calm. Write down warning signs, trusted contacts, local crisis resources, and what each person should do if risk increases. Include medication or medical information only if your parent chooses to share it. NAMI provides crisis-planning guidance through its family resources: NAMI: What to Do When Your Adult Loved One Refuses Help.

Share information with a provider, even if they cannot share it back
HIPAA does not generally prevent you from giving a clinician relevant information about your parent’s behavior, symptoms, prior treatment, or safety concerns. Privacy rules may limit what the clinician can tell you in return. Under NAMI’s explanation, a provider may sometimes share information if the patient agrees or does not object; professional-judgment exceptions can apply when the person is absent or lacks capacity to decide about disclosure. State privacy law may be more protective. NAMI: What to Do When Your Adult Loved One Refuses Help
If your parent is willing, ask whether they would sign a release naming one trusted relative. If they decline, you can still send the provider a concise, factual note and ask that it be added to the record. The provider may not be able to confirm treatment details or respond to you.
Get support for yourself, too
You do not have to manage this alone. NAMI offers Family-to-Family classes and Family Support Groups for relatives and friends. Its Family Caregiver HelpLine is listed at 800-950-NAMI (6264) or by text at 62640; check NAMI’s current information for hours and availability. NAMI: Family Members and Caregivers
