Then use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to see what visitors from those countries do after they arrive. The two tools answer different questions, and country is only a reporting dimension in both. It tells you where activity came from. It does not tell you whether the right localized page, language or market setup is working. This guide gives you a repeatable workflow that keeps those questions separate.
Step 1: Measure search visibility by country in Search Console
Open the Search results Performance report. Its core metrics are:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Clicks and impressions: whether Google Search results produced visibility and activity.
- CTR: clicks divided by impressions, useful for comparing how appealing or relevant your result is across markets.
- Average position: a directional visibility measure. It is an average, not a promise that a user saw a fixed rank, so read it next to queries, pages and impressions.
- Choose a date range, then use the compare option to set a like-for-like earlier period.
- Switch to the Countries tab to rank markets by clicks and impressions.
- Click a country to filter the report, then open the Queries and Pages tabs to see what drives that market.
- Where useful, add a device filter. Mobile and desktop mixes often differ by country.
These figures describe Google Search only. They exclude other search engines and are not a count of total site visits.

Step 2: Check that the intended local page is the one showing
With a country filter applied, look at the Pages tab. For each market, ask whether the URL you built for it is the one collecting impressions and clicks. Typical warning signs are a global English page dominating a market that has its own localized version, or a local page with impressions only in a different country.
#1 Best Overall
Several setup points affect this check:
- Keep each locale variant on its own crawlable URL, and describe the language and region relationships with hreflang annotations or sitemaps.
- Avoid locale-adaptive delivery, where one URL changes content by visitor location or language. Google notes it can make some versions harder to crawl and index, and its guidance says IP analysis is difficult and unreliable for adapting content.
- Do not look for a country-targeting setting in Search Console. The International Targeting report has been deprecated, and Google says its Search Console country-targeting feature is no longer supported. Hreflang remains supported.
Step 3: Measure what visitors do in GA4
Search Console stops at the click. GA4 shows engagement and outcomes, but only if tagging and key events are set up correctly. Use GA4’s country dimension with organic search traffic, and pick the right scope. GA4 traffic-source dimensions come in user, session and event scopes. When the question is what brought a session to the site, use the session-scoped dimensions.
For each country, review sessions, engagement measures and the key events that matter to your business, such as sign-ups or purchases. GA4 sessions and Search Console clicks are different measurements and will not match, so do not treat the gap as an error by itself.

Step 4: Combine both sources with the Search Console link
If you want landing pages, search metrics and analytics outcomes in one place, link the correct Search Console property to the GA4 web data stream.

It can be broken down by country and device.
- The Search Console report collection in GA4 is unpublished by default. An editor or administrator may need to publish it before it appears in navigation.
- The Queries report can be drilled down only by Search Console dimensions, not arbitrary Analytics dimensions, because the integrated measures support a restricted set of dimensions.
- According to Google’s integration help, these reports do not offer time-series charts.
For long-term trends, or reporting that spans several systems, export your Search Console reports on a schedule and keep a consistent series. Search Console exports are documented in the Performance report help.

Keep comparisons clean
Most apparent discrepancies come from mismatched settings. Before drawing conclusions:
- Match the country and device filters in Search Console and Analytics, as Google recommends.
- Compare the same property or page scope and identical date windows.
- Do not treat the newest days as final. Search Console data can take up to 48 hours to reach Analytics, and the latest Search Console data can be preliminary.
- Expect small differences between chart totals and table totals in Search Console, which come from aggregation differences rather than tracking faults.
- Remember that Search Console keeps data for up to 16 months, so export anything you need for longer-term comparisons.
A comparison grid for each market
| Question | Where to look | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Is there demand and visibility? | Search Console, Countries tab | Impressions and clicks against the market’s own previous period |
| Is the result appealing? | Search Console | CTR, read with the query mix |
| What is the ranking context? | Search Console, Queries tab | Average position beside queries and impressions |
| Is the right page showing? | Search Console, Pages tab with country filter | Intended locale URL against the URL actually receiving traffic |
| Do visitors engage or convert? | GA4, session-scoped organic traffic by country | Engagement and key events |
| Do both tools agree? | Linked Organic Search Traffic report | Same country, device and dates |
Google publishes no universal benchmark for these numbers. Judge each market against its own baseline and goals, not against another country’s results.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Build a routine
- Record a baseline for each target country: clicks, impressions, CTR, top pages, top queries and GA4 key events.
- Review on a fixed schedule, such as monthly, with the same date comparison each time. This cadence is practical advice. Google does not prescribe one.
- Annotate changes to localized URLs, content, hreflang, technical setup and local campaigns, so a country-level shift has context.
- Investigate before concluding. A rise or fall in one country shows that something changed, not that localization caused it.
