A camera alert or receipt discrepancy is a prompt for review—not, by itself, proof of deliberate theft. What a system can see and what happens next depend on the retailer and the technology.
What the different checkout cameras do
“Self-checkout camera” can refer to several systems, and their functions should not be conflated.

These are examples of disclosed systems, not a universal checklist of features. Retailer policies do not establish that every checkout camera uses automated theft detection or identifies a shopper.
Why a self-checkout camera might flag you
A scan-assistance system can monitor whether an item appears to have moved through the checkout without being included in the scanned transaction. Woolworths says its Scan Assist may alert the shopper and nearby staff when an item may have been mis-scanned or left in a trolley or basket. A short, low-resolution clip then appears on the checkout screen for review. Woolworths’ description of in-store technology explains that system’s stated operation.

An alert identifies a possible issue for review; it does not establish why it happened or prove intent. The retailer’s description explains the prompt, but it cannot tell a shopper why staff intervened in a particular incident.
Other camera functions are different from missed-scan alerts
Produce recognition
Woolworths says Picklist Assist uses produce characteristics such as color, shape, and size to narrow the choices shown at checkout. The company says this function recognizes fruits and vegetables and does not collect, capture, or store customer images, although a hand may briefly enter the camera’s view. That disclosure applies to Picklist Assist, not to cameras generally. Woolworths’ in-store technology disclosure also describes its other named systems.
Scan-free checkout
In some Tesco stores, scan-free checkout is a separate form of automation: cameras and measurement technology record activity around products, and images are analyzed to determine what has been picked up so items can be added to the basket at the till. This is not a description of every conventional self-checkout. Tesco describes the process in its privacy policy.

General store cameras
Retailers may also use CCTV for security and operational purposes. Walmart’s privacy notice says cameras and automated technologies operate in and outside its retail stores in the United States and Puerto Rico, and that checkout images may be captured to help deter theft or improve store design. Lowe’s says checkout cameras may capture customers and purchased products; in some states, it uses image matching and analysis after an incident to assist Asset Protection and Store Operations investigations. Those are retailer- and location-specific disclosures, not a description of every store’s practice.

How an exit receipt check can work
A manual receipt check and a camera-assisted exit check are different processes. In its explanation of Sam’s Club technology, Walmart Global Tech describes a camera arch capturing multiple images of a cart as it passes. Computer-vision models interpret features such as item size, shape, color, labels, and logos; software matches the identified cart contents against an outstanding receipt; and the comparison is sent to an exit associate in real time. Walmart Global Tech’s account of Sam’s Club exit technology describes this workflow.
Sam’s Club says its Exit Arches confirm items against a receipt. The company also states that the arches do not perform facial recognition or capture fingerprints. These statements concern the named Sam’s Club system; they do not show that all retailers use camera arches or automatically compare every cart with a receipt. A mismatch or staff request is a reason to clarify or review a transaction, not evidence on its own of a shopper’s intent. The available descriptions explain possible system workflows but cannot establish why a particular customer was asked to pause or show a receipt.

Privacy claims apply to particular systems. Woolworths says Scan Assist does not use facial recognition; it also says faces are blurred in on-screen clips and payment PIN pads are obscured. For its Scan&Go trolley cameras, which face downward to check that scanned items match trolley contents, Woolworths says faces are blurred if captured. These are the company’s stated safeguards for named technologies, not an industry-wide guarantee. Woolworths’ technology and privacy page gives further detail.

Retention periods also differ by system and retailer:
- Tesco scan-free checkout: Tesco says images and information derived from them are usually deleted within five days. This is the stated usual period for that system, not a general store-footage limit. See its privacy policy.
- Woolworths in-store technologies: Woolworths says images or footage are usually kept for up to 60 days. It lists exceptions for legal reasons, investigations, incidents, or team-member training. See its in-store technology disclosure.
The two periods concern different retailers and systems; neither establishes a standard retention period for all checkout cameras.
What these systems cannot establish on their own
A camera prompt, staff alert, or receipt comparison can identify something for review, but the retailer descriptions do not say that such a signal determines a shopper’s intent. They also do not establish a universal legal rule about store surveillance, biometric analysis, or whether a customer must participate in a receipt check. Those questions can depend on jurisdiction, store policy, membership terms, and the specific technology; the disclosures cited here are not legal advice.
