For most OLED gaming monitors, a sound starting point is to select the highest refresh rate the monitor supports at your resolution and connection, enable compatible variable refresh rate (VRR) for gaming, and set brightness to suit your room and the monitor’s documented SDR or HDR controls. Leave the panel’s protection features enabled. Exact limits and menu labels vary by model, so check your monitor’s manual before changing settings.
Set the supported refresh rate in your computer’s display settings
Check the monitor manual or specifications for the maximum refresh rate at the resolution and input you use. Then select that supported mode in your operating system. The monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) may show the active refresh rate, but it may not be where you change it. Dell directs users to Windows Display Settings for this change in its gaming monitor FAQ.

The model’s listed maximum is not universal: LG specifies 240Hz for the 27GX704A-B and 480Hz for the 27GX790A-B. These are product specifications, not a promise that every computer, cable, input, or resolution can use those rates. Your system must output the selected mode, and a game needs to render enough frames to make full use of a high refresh rate.

- Open your computer’s display settings and select the supported maximum for that setup.
- Check the monitor’s information screen, if available, to confirm the active signal matches your selection.
Enable VRR when the monitor and gaming system support it
Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a compatible display adjust its refresh timing to the frame output of a game. Manufacturer-listed terms include AdaptiveSync, NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible, and AMD FreeSync. LG describes its listed sync technologies as reducing tearing or stuttering; the compatible options depend on the monitor model and the connected GPU or console.
#1 Best Overall
- Samsung’s 27” Odyssey OLED G6 Gaming Monitor is engineered for perfection with a QD-OLED Display featuring QHD resolution made to deliver high brightness and a wide range of colors for gameplay
- OLED Safeguard technology supports performance by actively helping to prevent burn-in with a thermal modulation system
- Glare Free Technology keeps screen clear of reflection from external light sources
- The Pantone Validated screen accurately reproduces 2100+ lifelike colors and 110+ skin tone shades
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth and more realistic scenes
Enable the monitor’s supported adaptive-sync option and the corresponding setting on your computer or console. The exact names and paths differ, so use the monitor manual and the system’s graphics or display settings rather than assuming every combination is supported. A product page listing a VRR technology does not establish compatibility with every GPU, console, port, or connection.
Adjust brightness for SDR, HDR, and your room
There is no single brightness number that is best for every OLED gaming monitor. Separate ordinary desktop use in SDR from HDR gaming: the available controls and brightness behavior can differ between modes and between models. Start with a comfortable image for the room, then use the monitor’s documented picture controls for the content you are viewing. Do not assume that setting brightness to 100 is a universal recommendation.

For scale, LG lists 275 nits standard luminosity and 1300 nits peak brightness for the 27GX704A-B. Those are specifications for that model, not a target that applies to other OLED displays or a guide to full-screen brightness in every mode. ASUS notes that QD-OLED generations can differ in peak and full-screen brightness, efficiency, panel durability, reflections, and pixel layout.

LG’s 27GX704A-B page describes brighter setup choices that include turning off Smart Energy Saving, choosing Gamer 1, raising brightness, and setting Peak Brightness to High. LG warns that these choices can increase power consumption and burn-in risk. Treat them as model-specific options, not a general OLED setup recipe; consult your own monitor’s instructions before applying similar controls.

Keep OLED protection features enabled
Use the protection functions provided by your monitor, such as pixel shifting or screen movement, a screen saver or logo dimming, and pixel or image cleaning. ASUS explains that prolonged display of a static, high-contrast image can cause image persistence or burn-in, and that pixel shifting moves displayed pixels slightly. LG cautions that its protection method may not prevent every afterimage or instance of burn-in. These features reduce risk but are not guarantees.
Follow the monitor’s own prompts and maintenance instructions. For example, Dell’s FAQ describes Pixel Refresh for applicable models as an automatic process after at least four hours of use, taking six to eight minutes. It also describes a separate Panel Refresh around a 1,500-hour accumulated-use threshold, taking about an hour. These are Dell-specific details, not a schedule for OLED monitors generally; do not manually run another brand’s maintenance process or override its prompts based on Dell’s timings.

For instructions on your display’s protection features, refer to its manual and support information, including the ASUS OLED monitor protection FAQ.
Quick Recap
What to check when a setting is unavailable
- Refresh rate is missing: Recheck the monitor’s supported rate for the selected resolution, input, and cable, then consult the operating system and monitor instructions.
- VRR cannot be enabled: Confirm that the monitor, connection, and GPU or console support the same VRR mode, and check both the display and system settings.
- Brightness changes between modes: Check whether the monitor is in SDR or HDR and use the controls documented for that mode.
- A cleaning prompt appears: Follow the monitor’s instructions. Do not substitute another manufacturer’s refresh or cleaning schedule.
