To track U.S. federal lobbying and campaign contributions tied to a defense contractor, search the company’s LDA filings, FEC individual-contribution records, PAC committee records, and applicable bundling disclosures as separate datasets. They describe different activity: a person listing a contractor as an employer is not the same as the corporation giving money, and a PAC is a distinct committee. Keep the categories separate, use a defined date range, and verify database results against filed reports.
Start by identifying the entities and names
A contractor’s activity may be filed under different names depending on whether it lobbied in-house, hired an outside lobbying firm, or sponsored a political committee. Before searching, make a name list that includes the corporate legal name, known subsidiaries, PAC name, and any lobbying registrants or clients you can associate with the company.
Search both the lobbying registrant and client fields. In-house lobbying may be disclosed under the company; an outside firm may file reports identifying the company as its client. Do not combine similar names automatically: confirm that each variant or subsidiary belongs in the company group you are measuring. The LDA public system provides registrations and quarterly activity reports and supports searches of report records.

Find lobbying registrations and quarterly activity
Search LD-1 registrations and LD-2 quarterly activity reports by registrant, client, filing year, issue, government entity, and other available fields. LD-1 records registration; LD-2 reports describe lobbying activity, including issues and government contacts, and report income or expenses under the applicable reporting method. Read the filing itself rather than relying only on a search-result summary.
For each result, record the report period, registrant, client, issue descriptions, agencies or government entities, reported amount, filing ID, and filing link. Check for amendments or later filings and preserve them in your notes. The LDA filing guidance includes a defense-contractor example involving a CEO lobbying a covered Department of Defense official about renewing a government contract, illustrating how procurement matters can appear in disclosures.

Use LD-203 for the separate contribution-reporting trail
Search LD-203 contribution reports for relevant contractor or registrant names and lobbyist names. Review the report period, contribution date and type, contributor, payee, and honoree to understand what was reported and by whom. The LDA public system includes contribution reports as well as registrations and activity reports.
LD-203 is a specific disclosure channel, not a complete census of political activity connected to a business. Treat each entry as a report with its own filer and named parties; do not turn a search result into a company-wide campaign-spending total.

Search FEC records for individuals and committees separately
Individual contributions
Search the FEC individual-contribution database by employer using the company name and reasonable variants. Narrow the results by recipient committee, contributor, geography, date, and amount. FEC records include contributor name, reported employer or occupation, city and state, transaction date, amount, and receiving committee.
Describe these results as contributions from “individuals listing [company] as employer.” The employer field is a reported attribute of an individual contributor; by itself, it does not show that the contractor directed or funded the personal contribution.

PAC receipts and disbursements
Search FEC committee records for the contractor’s PAC and inspect that committee’s receipts and disbursements separately from employees’ personal contributions. Attribute activity to the committee as reported, not automatically to the corporation. OpenFEC documentation covers committee and receipt endpoints and the Schedule A data underlying itemized receipts; its API data are updated nightly, but the filed reports remain important for verification. See the OpenFEC API documentation.
Check bundling disclosures without misattributing the money
Where relevant, review lobbyist-bundling disclosures. Certain contributions collected or bundled by current Lobbying Disclosure Act registrants, or by their established or controlled PACs, trigger special reporting under FEC rules. The FEC bundling guidance explains the applicable disclosure framework.

A disclosed bundler link describes fundraising activity. It does not establish that the company supplied the contribution funds or that every contribution associated with a lobbyist was bundled in a reportable way.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the measures separate when comparing contractors
Lobbying amounts, personal contributions by people listing a contractor as employer, PAC activity, and reported bundling are not interchangeable. If comparing companies, use separate fields and a common time window rather than one blended “political spending” number.

| Measure | What to record | How to describe it |
|---|---|---|
| Lobbying activity | Reported amount, report period, issues, agencies or government entities, registrant and client | As reported on the LD-2 filing, with its reporting period and method |
| Individual contributions | Contributor, employer as reported, recipient committee, date, amount | Contributions by individuals listing the contractor as employer |
| PAC activity | Committee identity, receipts and disbursements, dates and amounts | Activity of the named PAC or committee |
| Bundling | Reported bundler, contribution details, date and applicable disclosure | Fundraising or bundling disclosure, not a company contribution |
| LD-203 reports | Filer, contribution type, named contributor, payee or honoree, date and report period | A separate LDA contribution-reporting record |
For a reproducible comparison, document the date range, companies and subsidiaries included, entity-name matching rules, and whether figures come from filed or amended reports. Preserve filing IDs and links. The OpenFEC API offers search and access to underlying filed records; because records and amendments can change, verify totals against the source filings.
Why there is no ready-made sector total
The official databases describe their filing systems and search tools, but they do not provide one current all-company total for defense-contractor lobbying and political contributions. A sector-wide figure therefore requires a defined contractor list, years covered, inclusion rules, and explicit treatment of subsidiaries, employees, PACs, and outside lobbyists. Without those choices, a single total can combine unlike records or count activity inconsistently.
