If your Samsung Galaxy charges over USB but its files do not appear on your computer, first unlock the phone, approve any data-access prompt, and change the USB connection mode to Transferring files / Android Auto (or MTP, if that is the label shown). Then check the cable and computer port. Charging alone does not prove the cable carries data.
1. Unlock the Galaxy and allow access to phone data
- Disconnect the phone, unlock it, and reconnect it while keeping the screen unlocked.
- If a prompt asks whether to allow access to phone data, tap Allow. Without permission, the computer may not be able to display the phone’s folders. Samsung’s PC detection instructions describe this permission step.
2. Change the USB mode from charging to file transfer
Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the USB connection notification. Select Transferring files / Android Auto; some devices or menus may show Transferring files or MTP instead. Menu wording and paths can vary by model and software version.

Check this setting early if the phone charges but stays invisible to the computer. Samsung support says the default USB connection mode on Galaxy devices is Charging phone only starting with One UI 8.0. In that mode, the phone can charge without exposing storage until you choose a file-transfer mode. See Samsung’s USB connection mode instructions.

Once the phone is unlocked, permission is granted, and file transfer is selected, look for the Galaxy in the computer’s file browser. On Windows, check File Explorer; on a Mac, check Finder. Open the phone and copy the files you need. Samsung provides file-copy instructions. If it still does not appear, continue with the cable and computer checks below.

4. Check the cable, adapter, and USB port
- Reseat the cable at both ends, then try another USB port on the computer.
- Test with a cable known to support data transfer. Some cables charge only, so a charging phone can still have no data connection. Samsung notes this in its Smart Switch troubleshooting guidance; Samsung Japan also distinguishes charging cables from charge-and-data cables in its connection guidance.
- Check whether the phone and computer have compatible ports. Depending on their connectors, you may need a suitable cable or adapter; there is no single cable type that can be recommended without knowing both devices.
5. Restart the devices and reinstall the Samsung USB driver
If the phone remains undetected after the basic checks, Samsung documents driver troubleshooting for PC or Mac setups using Smart Switch:
- Disconnect the Galaxy and restart the phone.
- Open Smart Switch on the computer, select More options, then choose Reinstall device driver.
- Reconnect the phone. Restart the computer too if it still does not detect the device.

Samsung Canada also recommends installing the latest device USB driver when the phone-data permission prompt does not appear and checking that the driver installed correctly if detection continues to fail; see its PC detection instructions.

6. Use another transfer method if USB is not essential
If you need to move files before resolving the cable or driver issue, Samsung lists Samsung Flow and cloud storage as alternatives in its file-moving guide. These options provide a different transfer route; they do not fix the USB connection itself.
