Make a Threads image post accessible by describing what matters in the image, putting essential wording in text where practical, and checking contrast for any text baked into the image. Meta documented image descriptions at Threads’ 2023 launch and an alt_text field in its API, but those sources do not establish the current app’s controls or defaults.
How do I add alt text to a Threads image post?
Meta’s July 2023 launch announcement said Threads included Instagram accessibility features such as screen-reader support and AI-generated image descriptions that could be edited before publishing. That is a statement about the launch-era experience, not confirmation that the same feature, label, or workflow is available now on every platform. Meta’s Threads API documentation separately lists an alt_text field for an image; an API field does not establish the steps for adding a description in the consumer app.
Because the available official sources do not document current consumer-app steps for iOS, Android, or web, avoid relying on a particular menu path. Check the controls in the version of Threads you use, and make sure an image description is present and accurate before posting if the app offers that option.
Meta’s July 2023 Threads launch announcement and the Threads API documentation describe these features at different product layers; neither verifies today’s consumer-app interface.

What should I write in alt text for a Threads post?
Describe the image’s relevant meaning in the context of the post. The goal is to help someone who cannot see the image understand why it matters, not to list every visible detail. The W3C’s WCAG guidance calls for text alternatives for non-text content; use that principle to provide an equivalent that fits the image and its purpose.
- For a simple photo: identify a person or object when relevant, describe the action or relationship, and include context needed to understand the post.
- For a text-heavy graphic: make essential wording—such as a quotation, instructions, or event details—available as ordinary post text or another text format when practical. Keep the image description useful rather than making the image the only way to access that wording.
- For a chart or infographic: describe the visual’s purpose and add a concise explanation of its main takeaway and relevant data in text. A short image description may not communicate every important point.
- For each image in a multi-image post: consider what that particular image contributes and provide a description for it when the available controls permit. Treat this as an authoring practice; the sources here do not verify Threads’ current carousel-specific controls.
Descriptions should add meaning, not repeat the surrounding post word for word unless the image itself contains wording that needs to be conveyed.

Does Threads automatically add alt text?
Meta said in its July 2023 launch announcement that AI-generated image descriptions were enabled on Threads and could be edited before publishing. The announcement documents what Meta said about the launch, not whether descriptions are currently generated by default, how they are displayed, or which controls are available in each app version. The available API reference confirms an image alt_text field, but does not answer those consumer-app questions.
If Threads offers an automatically generated description, review it before posting. Automated wording may not capture the image’s context or the point it makes in your post. Do not assume a description is present or correct without checking the controls and result in your current app.

How much contrast should text on an image have?
WCAG 2.2, published by the W3C in 2023, sets these minimum contrast ratios for text and images of text:
| Text in the image | WCAG 2.2 minimum contrast ratio |
|---|---|
| Ordinary text | 4.5:1 |
| Large text | 3:1 |
These are WCAG benchmarks, subject to the guideline’s stated exceptions—not a claim that Threads checks uploaded images or enforces these ratios. WCAG generally favors using text instead of an image of text when the same presentation can be achieved in text. Text embedded in a raster image also cannot be resized by a reader in the way ordinary text can.

- Make overlaid text large enough to read and avoid placing it over a visually busy background.
- Check the contrast between the text and the area behind it; do not judge readability from color choice alone.
- Where practical, provide important wording as selectable text in the post or an available text attachment as well as describing the image.
WCAG contrast requirements: Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you add text beyond the image description?
An image description is an alternative for the image; it is not a substitute for making substantial or essential wording available as text. For text-heavy graphics, share the wording in the post or another available text format. For charts and complex visuals, explain the key takeaway and relevant data so readers do not have to infer them from the image alone.

Meta announced in 2025 that Threads would support attaching up to 10,000 characters of text to a post to convey more complex perspectives. That announcement offers a possible place for fuller context, but the attachment does not replace the image’s alternative text. See Meta’s announcement about attaching text to Threads posts.
