1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo track cryptocurrency campaign money in the United States, start with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) committee ID, then inspect the committee’s filed receipts, disbursements, and reports for the relevant election cycle. A blockchain transfer, exchange announcement, or campaign statement is only a lead; the filed Schedule A or Schedule B transaction is the disclosure record you can verify.
The workflow below covers federal campaigns and PACs. State and local treatment is not uniform, so a federal filing cannot be used as a substitute for the applicable state or local disclosure system.

What you can—and cannot—learn from federal records
Federal campaign-finance records show money reported by committees registered with the FEC. They can connect a receipt or expenditure to a committee, date, amount, election designation, transaction type, donor or payee information, and the filing in which the transaction appears. They also let you examine a PAC’s receipts, candidate contributions, independent expenditures, reports, audits, enforcement matters, and advisory opinions.
They do not turn every wallet movement into a campaign-finance event. A wallet address, a crypto exchange announcement, or a campaign press release may help you locate a filing, but none replaces the committee’s filed transaction. Records can also be amended, so the report version and filing date matter.

Federal scope
This method is for elections for federal office. State and local laws may use different definitions, reporting forms, valuation rules, deadlines, and search systems. If the committee or office is outside the federal system, identify the relevant jurisdiction first and use its official records.
Why the committee ID is the key
Names change, committees use similar names, and a candidate can have more than one committee. The FEC committee ID is the stable key that joins receipts, disbursements, filings, audits, and spending records. Record it before collecting transactions; it is the safest way to prevent two committees with similar names from being combined.
Find the right committee before searching for crypto
- Open the FEC campaign-finance data search. Search by candidate, campaign committee, PAC name, or committee ID. The portal provides committee profiles, individual-contributor searches, receipts, spending, filings, bulk data, and links to external sources.
- Confirm the profile. Check the committee name, committee type, connected organization or candidate, and the election cycle shown on the profile. Do not rely on a name match alone.
- Copy the committee ID. Keep the ID with your notes and use it for every later search, download, or API query.
- Set the election cycle. A transaction can be assigned to a particular cycle even when its filing date falls outside the calendar year you expected. Keep cycle and transaction date as separate fields.
- Save the filing reference. Preserve the filing URL or report number shown by the FEC, along with the report type and filing date. If the filing is amended, keep the amended version and identify which version you used.
Pull receipts and filings that can contain cryptocurrency
Use the receipts search and the committee’s filings rather than a generic web search. Filter by the fields that define your question:
- election cycle;
- transaction date or date range;
- contributor or donor name;
- receiving committee;
- amount range;
- transaction type.
For each candidate transaction, open the filing and inspect the underlying Schedule A receipt row. A search-result total is not enough to establish what was reported.
Capture the complete receipt record
Save the following fields in a spreadsheet or database. Keeping the original wording makes later checking and corrections possible.
| Field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Committee name and committee ID | Identifies the reporting entity and prevents name-based mix-ups. |
| Filing URL or report number | Lets another reader open the exact disclosure you used. |
| Schedule A line and transaction type | Shows how the committee classified the receipt. |
| Donor name and address | Helps distinguish people or entities with similar names. |
| Employer and occupation, when disclosed | Provides the identifying information included in the filing; a blank field is not proof of a particular employment status. |
| Amount and transaction date | Establishes the reported value and when the committee recorded the receipt. |
| Election designation | Connects the transaction to the committee’s designated election or cycle. |
| Memo text | Can explain an in-kind item, a transfer, a refund, or another entry that should not be counted as new cash. |
| Amendment status and filing date | Shows whether a later filing changed the original disclosure. |
Search by donor and by committee
Run both directions. A donor-name search can find receipts across committees, while a committee search reveals transactions whose donor name is spelled differently or whose crypto connection is described only in memo text. Preserve the exact spelling and address displayed by the filing; do not merge records solely because names look similar.

How the FEC treats bitcoin in a campaign filing
The FEC’s Bitcoin contributions guidance says the Federal Election Campaign Act defines a contribution to include “any gift, subscription, loan, advance, or deposit of money or anything of value made by any person for the purpose of influencing any election for Federal office.” The guidance treats bitcoin as money or anything of value for this purpose.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Valuation at receipt
A committee values bitcoin at its market value when received and reports the initial receipt as an in-kind contribution. The amount you analyze is therefore the value reported by the committee at the receipt date, not a later market price and not an amount inferred from a blockchain exchange rate.
Held bitcoin and the offsetting disbursement
When the committee holds the bitcoin rather than liquidating it, the FEC guidance calls for an offsetting disbursement. That second entry is part of the reporting treatment for the asset; it is not automatically a second contribution. Read the receipt and the related disbursement together and use the memo text to understand the relationship.
Do not overgeneralize beyond the guidance
The cited FEC guidance specifically addresses bitcoin. Do not assume that every token, stablecoin, exchange credit, or other digital asset receives identical treatment without checking the committee’s filing and the applicable FEC guidance. Report what the record establishes: asset description, value at receipt, classification, and any related entry.
Separate direct contributions from PAC spending and independent expenditures
Crypto-related political money can appear in different records. The committee, transaction type, date, cycle, and purpose determine what the entry means.

How to research which PACs spend crypto-related money
PAC research requires both sides of the ledger. A receipts-only search can show who funded a PAC while missing how that PAC used the money.
Review PAC receipts
Start with total receipts and itemized contributions for the selected cycle. Look for donor names, reported occupations and employers when present, transaction dates, amounts, committee transfers, and memo text. If a bitcoin receipt is reported, capture the valuation and the associated filing rather than estimating value from a wallet balance.
Review PAC disbursements
Inspect total disbursements and the individual spending records. Separate:

- operating expenses and other spending purposes;
- transfers, refunds, and entries that explain or offset another transaction.
For an independent expenditure, record the candidate named in the filing, whether the expenditure is for or against that candidate, the date, amount, payee, purpose, and filing. Do not infer support or opposition from a vendor name alone when the filing supplies a purpose description.
Check filings and compliance history
Open the PAC’s reports, amendments, audits, enforcement actions, and advisory opinions. Note whether a filing was amended and whether the FEC issued a request for additional information. A compliance document can change how confidently you interpret a transaction, even when the original receipt or disbursement remains visible.
Build a PAC comparison table
When comparing committees, use one row per committee and one consistent cycle. Include the following columns:

Use OpenFEC API queries or bulk data for repeatable analysis
The FEC portal is suitable for one committee or a small number of transactions. For multi-committee, multi-cycle, or donor-level work, use OpenFEC API queries or bulk downloads so another researcher can reproduce the result.
- Define the unit of analysis. Decide whether each row represents a receipt, disbursement, filing, committee, or candidate. Do not mix units in one total.
- Start with committee IDs. Use the IDs collected from committee profiles as the join key for receipts, disbursements, filings, and spending.
- Fix the cycle and date rules. Write down the election cycle and transaction-date range before running the query. Keep the same rules for every committee in the comparison.
- Apply explicit filters. Record contributor, committee, amount, transaction type, and date filters. If you search for a donor, save the exact spelling and any address or employer filter used.
- Download the underlying records. Keep the raw API response or bulk file alongside the cleaned table. Never overwrite the source when correcting names or normalizing amounts.
- Log retrieval details. Save the query parameters, bulk-file name, and retrieval time. This makes it possible to explain why a later download differs after an amendment.
- Document exclusions. Note whether you excluded memo entries, refunds, transfers, offsetting disbursements, amended originals, or transactions outside the cycle.
The OpenFEC API documentation includes terms restricting commercial solicitation use of contributor lists. Treat contributor data as disclosure information for lawful analysis, not as a prospecting list.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify a crypto donation before publishing or sharing it
Use a two-source check: an external clue can lead you to a committee, but the FEC filing must establish the political transaction.
- Match the identity. Compare the wallet transfer, exchange announcement, or campaign statement with the committee name and ID in the filing.
- Confirm legal permissibility. Check that the reported donor or entity is legally permitted to make the contribution under the federal rules that apply to the transaction.
- Confirm the amount basis. Use the value reported at receipt. Do not substitute the transfer’s token quantity, a later sale price, or a current market quote.
- Confirm the transaction type. Decide whether the entry is a receipt, a direct candidate contribution, an independent expenditure, a transfer, a refund, or an offsetting entry.
- Confirm the cycle. Check election designation and cycle separately from the calendar date.
- Read memo text and related rows. Look for an in-kind explanation, a held-asset offset, a refund, or another note that changes how the amount should be counted.
- Check amendments. Use the latest applicable filing and retain the earlier version when the amendment explains a change.
- Record uncertainty precisely. If the filing does not identify the asset, wallet, or purpose, say that the record does not establish it. Do not fill the gap with blockchain inference.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Treating a wallet transfer as a filing
Problem: A public blockchain transaction is presented as proof of a campaign contribution. Correction: Locate the committee’s Schedule A entry and report the filed value, date, classification, and memo. If no filing is found, describe the blockchain event only as an unverified lead.
Searching only for the word “crypto”
Problem: A filing may identify bitcoin through transaction type or memo text without using a broad cryptocurrency label. Correction: Search the committee and donor, inspect the underlying schedules, and review all relevant memo text.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Combining election cycles
Problem: A multi-year total combines transactions assigned to different cycles. Correction: Filter and report each cycle separately, then label any combined total as a deliberate aggregation.
Best Value
Counting an amendment twice
Problem: The original and amended rows are added together. Correction: Identify the latest applicable filing and use the earlier version only to explain what changed.
Counting an offsetting disbursement as new political money
Problem: The bitcoin receipt and the related disbursement are treated as two contributions. Correction: Pair the rows and follow the FEC’s reporting treatment for held bitcoin.
Calling independent expenditure a donation
Problem: A PAC’s expenditure for or against a candidate is added to that candidate’s receipts. Correction: Keep the PAC’s spending record separate and preserve the for-or-against designation.

Assuming federal rules apply everywhere
Problem: A federal bitcoin treatment is applied to a state ballot measure or local candidate. Correction: Identify the jurisdiction and consult its official filing system and law.
How to compare committees without losing context
Use a consistent set of comparison axes when examining several campaigns or PACs:
- election cycle;
- committee ID and committee type;
- receipt source and donor identity as filed;
- crypto asset description and valuation method;
- total receipts and total disbursements;
- direct contributions to candidates;
- independent expenditures for or against candidates;
- spending purpose, date, and geography when the filing supplies them;
- amendment status and any FEC request for additional information.
Do not rank committees by a single crypto-related receipt. A PAC can receive one digital-asset contribution and spend its funds through several unrelated purposes; a candidate committee can report an in-kind asset without the asset becoming a PAC expenditure. The records must remain separated by committee and transaction type.
Put crypto activity in the scale of federal filings
The FEC’s FY2025 Agency Financial Report counted 502.7 million transactions, $28.3 billion in receipts, and $28.0 billion in disbursements during the 2024 election cycle. The same report recorded more than 648 million FEC API hits during that cycle. These are overall federal campaign-finance figures, not crypto-only totals. They show why a reproducible committee-and-transaction method is more reliable than trying to infer a national cryptocurrency subtotal from headlines or wallet activity.
An end-to-end workflow for one investigation
Suppose an announcement says a federal campaign accepted bitcoin from a named donor. A defensible investigation proceeds in this order:
Quick Recap
- Search the FEC portal for the candidate and confirm the campaign committee ID.
- Set the election cycle associated with the announcement and search receipts by donor name and date.
- Open the filing containing the match and copy the Schedule A row, including amount, address, employer and occupation when disclosed, election designation, transaction type, and memo text.
- Check whether the filing describes bitcoin or another in-kind contribution and note the market value reported at receipt.
- Search the same committee’s disbursements for a related offsetting entry if the asset was held rather than liquidated.
- If a PAC is involved, inspect the PAC’s receipts and disbursements separately, including candidate contributions and independent expenditures.
- Check amendments, audits, enforcement actions, advisory opinions, and requests for additional information before drawing a conclusion.
- Match the final filing record to the original announcement and state exactly what the filing confirms, what it does not identify, and which cycle and date the amount belongs to.
Publication checklist
- Scope is identified as federal, state, or local.
- Committee ID is recorded and used as the primary key.
- Election cycle and transaction date are both stated.
- Schedule A or Schedule B filing reference is preserved.
- Donor, address, employer, and occupation are copied only when disclosed.
- Crypto value is reported at the committee’s stated receipt valuation.
- In-kind receipts and related offsetting disbursements are paired.
- Direct contributions, PAC spending, and independent expenditures are not merged.
- Amended filings and FEC requests for additional information are checked.
- API parameters or bulk-file details and retrieval time are saved for repeatability.
- Blockchain or campaign announcements are treated as corroborating leads, not substitutes for filed records.
- Any state or local claim is verified in that jurisdiction’s own system.
