Use an unlock calendar to spot scheduled supply releases, then verify important dates and amounts against project disclosures or vesting-contract data. Track the recipient, release size relative to circulating supply, date certainty and market liquidity. An unlock means tokens may become available—not that recipients have sold them or that a price drop is certain.
What a token unlock tells you—and what it doesn’t
A token unlock is a scheduled release of previously restricted tokens. It is not proof that the tokens have entered exchange circulation, been claimed by beneficiaries or been sold. Recipients may sell, hold, stake, transfer or otherwise use them.

Keep four events distinct when reading a schedule or discussing market activity:
- Unlocked: restrictions have ended or tokens are eligible for release.
- Claimed or transferred: a recipient has taken custody or moved the tokens.
- Circulating: the tokens are counted as available in the market under the tracker’s or project’s definition.
- Sold: a holder has exchanged tokens; this requires evidence beyond the calendar entry.
Calendars are useful for monitoring possible supply overhang. They are not price forecasts.

Choose a calendar, then verify its coverage
Start with a calendar or tokenomics dashboard for discovery. Tokenomist’s documentation describes overview measures for cliff unlocks and average daily linear releases; its token pages cover emissions, unlock progress, allocations, vesting schedules and events. See the Tokenomist documentation and Tokenomist. CoinMarketCap’s token unlock listing provides fields including circulating supply, unlock progress, the next unlock and its date. These interfaces and features can change, so check the current product rather than assuming a field is always available.
When comparing trackers, look for evidence behind the schedule as well as a convenient event list. Tokenomics.com also provides a live token unlock calendar; its displayed listings and figures are snapshots that can change.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Source and verification | Project disclosures or contract data can help validate a tracker’s entry. |
| Date precision | An exact contract timestamp is different from a date estimated from a month-level vesting description. |
| Release type and allocation | Cliffs, linear vesting, issuance and recipient categories describe different kinds of supply entering availability. |
| Relative size | Token amount and its share of circulating supply are more informative than dollar value alone. |
| Claims visibility and revisions | A scheduled release is not a confirmed claim or sale; schedule changes may also make an older entry stale. |
A repeatable workflow for tracking material unlocks
1. Build a watchlist and set a review horizon
Add the tokens you follow to a calendar or dashboard and review upcoming events over a horizon that suits your monitoring needs. Calendars can surface several forms of supply movement, including one-off cliff releases, linear vesting and ongoing issuance. Treat the list as a way to find events worth checking—not as a complete or authoritative record by itself.

2. Record the event details that affect its significance
For each material event, log the fields below. Tokenomist’s documentation distinguishes cliff unlocks from linear unlocks or issuance and describes next-event value and percentage-of-circulating-supply fields: Tokenomist documentation.
- Token amount and date, including time zone or timestamp if stated.
- Whether the release is a cliff, a linear vesting installment or ongoing issuance.
- Recipient allocation, such as investors, contributors, community or ecosystem.
- Amounts already unlocked and the circulating-supply figure used for comparison.
- The event’s size as a percentage of circulating supply.
- Available trading liquidity and market depth around the asset.
A release’s dollar value can obscure its relative scale. Compare the quantity with circulating supply, then consider whether the market has enough liquidity and depth to absorb possible selling. This is an analytical comparison, not a formula that predicts price impact.
3. Check how the date was derived
Read the tracker’s methodology or precision notes before treating a date as fixed. Tokenomist explains that broad descriptions such as “monthly vesting after TGE” require an assumption; its documented example uses the same day of each following month after identifying the TGE date. A timestamp taken from a vesting contract is different from a date inferred from imprecise project language. Check project announcements, token documentation and contract data where available before relying on an estimated date.

4. Check who receives the tokens and what has actually happened
Allocation gives context, but it does not reveal a recipient’s plans. A community or ecosystem release may have a different use from an allocation to early investors; neither label proves that recipients will hold or sell. If the distinction matters, investigate relevant on-chain claims or wallet movements rather than treating the scheduled event as evidence of a sale.
5. Revisit the event before and after its date
Set reminders to review the schedule ahead of the event, on the listed date and afterward. Public information can affect price or positioning before tokens become available. Check whether the project has revised its schedule, whether tokens moved or were claimed, and how liquidity and market conditions changed. A calendar entry alone is not a trading signal.

It can contribute to selling pressure if newly available tokens are sold, but the schedule alone does not establish that they will be. Market participants may anticipate a public event before its date, and actual effects depend on factors such as release size, recipient behavior, liquidity, positioning and wider market conditions. No single percentage converts unlock size into a reliable expected decline.

In a 2023 analysis, 6th Man Ventures’ Mustafa Qazi and Carl Vogel examined more than 5,000 unlock events across 20 protocols, checking schedule data against on-chain information and/or protocol teams. They reported that small events increasing circulating supply by 0% to 1% had no meaningful relationship to price in that dataset, while larger unlocks correlated with a noticeable negative relationship. Their reported median price line fell further after unlocks, and the relationships varied by timeframe. The authors also discussed anticipatory price behavior, outlier market events and short squeezes as complications. These are historical observational findings, not a safe threshold or a prediction for a particular token. Read the 6th Man Ventures analysis.
How to avoid being surprised by selling pressure
- Use a calendar to identify upcoming events, then verify material entries against project sources or contract data.
- Write down whether the listed date is exact or estimated, and what assumption produced it.
- Compare the release with circulating supply, recipient allocation and available market liquidity—not just its dollar value.
- Watch for actual claims or transfers after the unlock instead of assuming the scheduled supply was sold.
- Review changes and market behavior on both sides of the date; a public schedule may already be reflected in positioning.
This process can reduce the chance of overlooking a supply event. It cannot eliminate market risk or turn an unlock date into a dependable trade prediction.
