You can customize Android Auto from its settings on your phone: organize which compatible apps are available, keep navigation and media controls visible, and adjust text and motion preferences. Set everything up while parked; Android Auto restricts some interactions when the car is moving.
Start with Android Auto settings on your phone
Android Auto is integrated into compatible phones, so Google says you do not need to download a separate Android Auto app. The settings entry is on the phone, but its exact location and labels can vary by manufacturer and software version. Search your phone’s Settings for “Android Auto” if you do not see it in the menus.

Before changing settings, make sure your phone and vehicle support Android Auto. For wired projection, Google lists a compatible phone and car, an active data plan, and a high-quality USB cable. Check that the cable connector fits both the phone and vehicle port; a cable does not make an otherwise incompatible vehicle work. Wireless projection additionally requires a compatible phone with 5 GHz Wi-Fi support and a compatible car or stereo. Confirm your specific vehicle with its manufacturer. Google’s Android Auto setup and compatibility guidance explains the connection requirements.

If an app is missing
First, open the app on your phone and check the launcher again. Google notes that Samsung phones may temporarily disable unused apps to save battery, which can make an app disappear from Android Auto. If that is the cause, opening the app may restore it. You can also look in Samsung’s battery settings for options such as “Auto disable unused apps” or “Put unused apps to sleep”; the precise wording can differ by phone and software version. Google’s Android Auto screen guidance addresses this behavior.
Keep navigation and media controls in view
Turn on Show quick controls for apps in Android Auto settings on your phone to keep media controls and navigation directions visible while a full-screen app is open. Find Android Auto in your phone’s Settings, then look for this option; the route to it can vary by device. Google’s screen settings guidance describes the control.

Set up navigation and messages while parked
Change Google Maps options
Google Maps provides route and display options while navigation is active, including a traffic-information toggle. To set a destination by typing on the car display, put the vehicle in Park first. Some controls and labels may vary with the app and vehicle. Google’s Android Auto navigation guidance explains navigation settings and the Park requirement.
Google Maps’ EV battery predictions and charging-stop recommendations are limited to select countries and select electric-vehicle models. Check availability for your market and vehicle rather than assuming the feature will appear for every EV. Google’s navigation guidance describes those limits.
Use voice for messages
Android Auto can read messages aloud and let you dictate a reply. The assistant repeats the dictated message and asks you to confirm before sending. Use voice interaction where possible, and do not type or adjust settings while driving. Google says Android Auto uses safety lockouts for some actions, including typing messages while moving and scrolling through long lists. Google’s messaging guidance explains voice messaging; its accessibility guidance describes safety lockouts.
