Yes. Linux command-line tools such as LibreOffice Calc and Gnumeric can convert Excel workbooks, and their documentation describes support for Excel formats and formula-related features. But conversion support is not a guarantee that every workbook will retain all sheets, formulas, or Excel-specific behavior unchanged. Work on a copy and verify the result in the application that will use it.

soffice --headless --convert-to xlsx --outdir output_dir input.xlsx
Use an input file in a format Calc can open and choose an output extension appropriate to your workflow. The documented conversion syntax and filter list are at LibreOffice’s command-line conversion help and file-filter documentation.

Gnumeric’s ssconvert
Gnumeric describes ssconvert as a command-line spreadsheet format converter and documents Excel importers and exporters. Its manual also lists a --recalc option, which recalculates formulas before writing the output. Consult the ssconvert manual for supported formats and options.

Some exporters allow sheet selection. If you need the complete workbook, check that your command does not select just one worksheet; the available sheet-selection behavior is documented in the ssconvert man page.

Do multiple worksheets and formulas survive conversion?
They can in common cases, but no general guarantee establishes that every workbook will survive conversion unchanged. LibreOffice Calc recognizes Excel A1 formula syntax, including cross-sheet references such as =Sheet2!C4. That syntax support does not establish that every Excel function, reference, or workbook feature behaves identically after conversion. See Calc’s formula syntax documentation.
One documented compatibility caveat concerns Excel external sheet addresses built inside INDIRECT: in the described case, they are not automatically translated to Calc address syntax. Workbooks using this pattern need specific testing; details are in LibreOffice’s INDIRECT help.

How to check a converted workbook
Convert a duplicate, keep the original intact, and validate the output in the application that will consume it. Check the properties your workbook actually depends on:
- Open the output and compare worksheet names and count with the original.
- Inspect cross-sheet formulas to confirm they remain formulas, point to the intended sheets, and return expected values.
- Test external references and formulas that rely on Excel-specific behavior.
- If relevant, check charts, named ranges, formatting, macros, and data connections for usability.
For an automated workflow, treat successful file creation as only the first check. Confirm the exported workbook’s contents, and use the recipient application for final validation when fidelity matters.

How to choose between LibreOffice and Gnumeric
