If an interviewer or background investigator asks about an old or troubling social media post, answer truthfully, explain the context without using it as an excuse, and show what you have learned or changed. A clear explanation can help an agency assess the facts; it cannot guarantee that a post will be overlooked or that you will pass vetting.
Could police recruiters review your social media?
Assume that public posts may come up, but do not assume every agency searches the same accounts or at the same stage. California requires a social media check for peace officer candidates under the cited POST guidance. Nottinghamshire Police says social media accounts are checked as part of its vetting process, after its interview stage. These are examples of specific jurisdictions, not a universal procedure.

Selection interviews and background or vetting interviews are not always the same event. In California, POST guidance describes social media review as part of the background investigation and says a discrepancy interview may be used if an issue or inconsistency arises. Nottinghamshire describes checks after the interview stage. Follow the recruiting agency’s instructions and ask its recruiter or background unit if you need to know when or how a check is conducted.

For England and Wales, the Vetting Code of Practice says each case should be considered on its own merits, with relevant information and risk taken into account. That code, updated 20 July 2023, sets expectations for forces in England and Wales; it does not establish a single outcome for every applicant or post. Read the Vetting Code of Practice.

How to answer questions about a post
Use this practical framework to keep your explanation accurate and focused. It is a preparation aid based on official guidance, not a required script.
- Identify your connection to it. Say whether you wrote it, reposted it, endorsed it, or were only tagged. If the attribution is wrong, explain the factual reason rather than simply denying it.
- Give concise context. Explain when it was posted and any circumstances that help clarify what happened. Do not use context to dismiss the post’s impact or excuse what it said.
- Take responsibility where it is yours. State plainly what was wrong, or why the content could reasonably call your judgment, respect for others, impartiality, or suitability for the role into question.
- Describe what you understand now and what changed. If true, point to specific actions—such as correcting or apologising for the post, learning from the incident, or sustained changes in conduct—that support your account. Do not claim growth you cannot substantiate.
- Answer follow-up questions directly. Do not guess what an investigator wants to hear or invent details. If you do not remember a date or fact, say so and offer to verify it.
New Zealand Police’s general interview guidance encourages candidates to focus on their own actions and outcomes, and says: “Honest reflection – even about imperfect experiences – helps us understand your potential and how you might grow within Police.” That is interview guidance, not a promise about a vetting decision. What an agency may consider
The content itself is only part of the picture. Official guidance points to factors such as the post’s seriousness, context, frequency, recency, the applicant’s age when it was made, elapsed time, identifiability, and whether it forms a pattern. The applicant’s explanation and whether it is consistent with disclosures and verified information can also matter.

California POST’s Background Investigation Manual says social media review should focus on candidate statements, posts, or endorsements relevant to suitability and comply with state and federal law. It advises investigators to assess substance, context, frequency, and recency, consider positive attributes that may mitigate past behavior, and document results. It also describes a discrepancy interview in which the candidate receives a written description of each issue and an opportunity to explain it. These are California-specific procedures and guidance, not a guaranteed format elsewhere. Read California POST’s Background Investigation Manual.

A January 2024 College of Policing consultation draft for England and Wales also lists the applicant’s age at the time, time passed, platform, identifiability, pattern, and whether activity appears discriminatory, abusive, misogynistic, oppressive, harassing, bullying, victimising, or offensive. It says concerning open-source material should be recorded as evidence for a vetting interview. Because this is consultation material, it should not be treated as a statement of final current professional guidance. Read the January 2024 consultation draft.
What not to do
- Do not misrepresent authorship or involvement. If the investigator has information that conflicts with your account, an inaccurate denial can become a separate credibility concern.
- Do not rely on age, deletion, privacy settings, or “everyone said it” as a defense. Those facts do not establish that the concern disappears. Answer disclosure forms and questions accurately.
- Do not claim “out of context” unless you can explain the context precisely. A context explanation should clarify facts, not erase the words or their likely effect.
- Do not assume honesty alone resolves serious conduct. Being candid helps the agency assess your account, but does not ensure a favorable decision.
California POST says discrepancies should be put to the candidate for a complete explanation. In the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office says employers conducting public social-media checks for pre-employment vetting should justify the need, tell candidates about the check, consider their comments, and avoid relying on online information alone as a fair or reliable basis for a decision. That is UK employer guidance, not a universal legal rule for every police jurisdiction. Read the ICO’s pre-employment vetting guidance.

What the available findings do—and do not—show
There is no established population-wide statistic in the cited material for the odds that an applicant with problematic posts will pass vetting. Two inspection and audit findings illustrate why broad predictions are unreliable:

- HMICFRS reported that none of the reviewed applicant files containing concerning social-media information led to rejection. That finding describes only the files included in that inspection; it is not a pass rate and does not show that such posts are harmless. The inspection recommended detailed rationales and records of identified risks. Read the HMICFRS inspection report.
- A 2021 California State Auditor report reviewed five departments and found social-media screening was often limited or poorly documented. Among those departments, only San José Police documented broader searches for accounts beyond those applicants disclosed. This audit does not establish current practice at every California agency. How to prepare before the interview
- Review the agency’s application instructions and be ready to answer its disclosure questions accurately.
- If you know a particular post may be raised, write down the facts you can verify: your role in it, when it appeared, its context, and what you did afterward.
- Separate what you know from what you do not remember. Do not fill gaps with a guess.
- Prepare to explain your reflection and any genuine change in conduct with specific examples, without promising more than you can support.
- If you need clarification about the process, contact the recruiter or background unit. Do not assume another force’s timing or policy applies to your application.
