A wrong character set can corrupt text, a wrong separator can merge or split columns, and an ambiguous date can be interpreted in the wrong order. The filter syntax described here is LibreOffice-specific; check the help for your installed version before using it in a production conversion.
Make the conversion reproducible
Record the input and output filenames, the command you ran, your installed LibreOffice version, and the CSV options used. LibreOffice allows CSV filter options to be included in the conversion filter specification; the documented options include the field separator, text delimiter, character set, the row where import begins, and per-column formatting. See LibreOffice’s CSV filter parameter documentation for the option positions and syntax. Check your local version’s help before copying a filter string: the documentation does not establish that every version uses identical behavior.

For each file, compare its actual requirements with the settings you intend to use:

- Character encoding for reading the source and writing the output.
- Field separator and text delimiter.
- Import language or locale.
- Date order and, where possible, the format assigned to each column.
- Whether the output must retain multiple sheets, formulas, or formatting.
Fix encoding errors and garbled characters
First identify the source file’s character encoding from the system that produced it or from a trusted file specification. Choose that character set explicitly for import, and choose the intended output character set explicitly for export. In the LibreOffice filter options, the character-set token controls the file encoding; the documentation includes a Windows-1252 export example.

Do not assume the encoding from the filename extension. After conversion, inspect rows with accented letters or other non-ASCII characters and compare them with text known to be correct. If the encoding is unknown, there is no universal detection procedure established here: test plausible candidates against known text and, where possible, confirm the encoding with the file’s producer.
Fix delimiter errors and incorrect columns
CSV is delimited text, not a guarantee that every file uses commas. A field separator can be a comma, semicolon, tab, or another character. The text delimiter is a separate setting: it marks the start and end of a text value. A value containing the field separator must be quoted so that the separator inside it is not treated as a column break.

- Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices
- Inspect a raw input line. Identify the character between fields and the character, if any, enclosing text values.
- Set both options explicitly. In the LibreOffice CSV filter settings, choose the field separator and text delimiter to match the file; do not treat them as interchangeable.
- Check the import preview. When importing through Calc, enable the filter settings and inspect the preview to see whether values divide into the intended columns. LibreOffice’s CSV import and export help describes the import settings and delimiter controls.
If a value that should occupy one cell appears in multiple columns, check whether it contains the separator without being quoted, or whether the selected separator is wrong. If several fields appear in one column, check whether the file uses a different separator than the one selected.

Set the import language or locale deliberately. LibreOffice notes that language settings affect how numeric strings are read. For date columns, use an explicit column format when possible; Calc’s available date-order choices include DMY, MDY, and YMD.

Strings such as 03/04/2025 are ambiguous when both the day and month are 12 or less. The characters alone cannot establish whether this means March 4 or April 3. Confirm the producer’s convention before conversion, or keep the values as text until you can verify it. After import, check dates that appear to have moved to the wrong month or year rather than trusting automatic conversion.
Know what CSV export keeps
CSV is a text interchange format, not a complete spreadsheet document. LibreOffice states that exporting to CSV saves only the current sheet; formulas and formatting are omitted. If the recipient needs multiple sheets, formulas, or presentation formatting, keep or provide a spreadsheet-format file instead. See LibreOffice’s CSV import and export help.
