How to Track Character Relationships and Alliances in Critical Role Campaign 3

The most reliable way to track who is allied with whom in Bells Hells is an event-based relationship log, not a single permanent character chart. Record one row every time an episode changes a bond, label the tie (alliance, patronage, friendship, romance, rivalry, debt or temporary cooperation), preserve the previous status, and attach the exact episode or recap as evidence.

Campaign 3 began on October 21, 2021, is set on Marquet and follows Bells Hells. It concluded in February 2025 after 121 episodes, so you can now build a complete campaign map rather than trying to predict where an unresolved relationship will go. Critical Role’s official Campaign 3 description calls Bells Hells “the unconventional crew … whose unassuming pasts tug the threads of destiny in ways not even the gods could anticipate.”

Why a static relationship chart fails

A conventional chart usually draws one line between two characters and labels it “ally” or “enemy.” That loses the story’s most useful information: when the relationship began, who initiated it, whether the feeling was mutual, and what event changed it. A party member can be a trusted friend, a tactical partner and a political liability at the same time. A patron can provide resources without receiving personal loyalty. Two characters may cooperate in one scene while remaining ideological opponents.

Track relationships as a sequence of dated events. A new row should describe an action or revelation, such as an offer of protection, a public disagreement, a private confession, a separation caused by the Apogee Solstice or a renewed call for help. Never overwrite the old row when the status changes. The resulting history shows the trajectory of a bond and lets you answer questions such as “Which episode changed this alliance?” without relying on memory.

Set up the tracker

Use a spreadsheet, database or notes table

A spreadsheet is sufficient for most viewers. A database is useful if you want to filter by faction, spoiler level or confidence across all 121 episodes. A linked note system works well when each row points to a detailed scene note. Whatever tool you choose, keep one relationship event per row and use consistent names for characters and factions.

Required fields

Field What to record Why it matters
Episode Campaign and episode number, such as C3E02 Lets readers return to the exact point where the edge changed.
Arc Jrusar; Ruidus Rising; Separations and Explorations; Ruidus to Aeor; Downfall; or The End of an Age Places a local event in the campaign’s larger structure.
Subject The character or faction initiating the action Separates an offer, threat or confession from the person receiving it.
Object The character, group, patron, enemy or institution affected Allows one event to be found from either side of the relationship.
Relationship type Party alliance, patronage, friendship, romance, rivalry, debt, family or temporary cooperation Prevents unlike ties from being treated as equivalent.
Status Proposed, active, strained, broken, reconciled, secret or uncertain Captures the current state without erasing earlier states.
Evidence The exact scene, official recap or transcript passage; add a timestamp when available Makes an interpretation checkable and keeps fan speculation separate from what was shown.
Spoiler level Episode-specific, arc-level or campaign-complete Lets you share a useful map without revealing later developments.
Confidence Directly shown, explicitly stated, strongly implied or fan interpretation Signals how firmly the source supports your wording.
Change note What changed from the previous row Explains why a new row exists instead of merely repeating a label.

Use a controlled vocabulary

Choose one spelling for every character and faction, and do not alternate between a nickname and a formal name in the same field. Keep relationship type and status in separate columns: “romance” is a type, while “secret” or “reconciled” is a status. If a scene supports more than one reading, select “uncertain” and explain the competing interpretations in the evidence note rather than forcing a definitive label.

Track different kinds of ties separately

Filtering by relationship type is the difference between a useful network and a misleading web of identical lines.

Type What belongs in it Campaign 3 example or use
Operational alliance Characters who currently travel, investigate or fight together The Bells Hells party relationship, especially while it is still provisional.
Patron or faction tie Missions, authority, money, equipment, intelligence or protection supplied by an institution or individual Lord Eshteross is the early patronage example.
Personal trust Confidants, emotional bridges and strained friendships Orym’s relationship with Dorian demonstrates how a personal tie can connect people outside the core group.
Romance Explicit romantic development, kept distinct from affection or friendship Imogen and Laudna develop a romantic relationship during the campaign.
Rivalry or threat Enemies, coercion, debts and ideological conflict Ludinus Da’leth and the Ruby Vanguard should be tracked as threats and opposing faction ties.
Temporary cooperation A short-term bargain with a person who is not a stable ally Use this when a shared objective does not establish trust or ongoing allegiance.

Five comparison axes

  • Reciprocity: mark whether both sides acknowledge the bond or only one side acts.
  • Stability: distinguish a durable connection from a one-scene arrangement.
  • Visibility: record whether the relationship is public, private or secret.
  • Power: identify peer, patron, dependent and adversary dynamics.
  • Story function: note whether the tie is primarily emotional, practical, political or a plot trigger.

Anchor the map to the six campaign arcs

The official campaign overview divides Campaign 3 into six major arcs. Use those boundaries as section filters, then add an “event that changed the edge” note inside each arc. The ranges below are campaign-level spoiler labels; an episode-specific log should still name the individual episode.

Jrusar (C3E01–C3E23)

Spoiler level: arc-level. Three adventuring groups meet in Jrusar and gradually form the party known as Bells Hells. Their alliance is intentionally tentative at first, while the group investigates the city’s mysteries and begins working with Lord Eshteross.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.

Event that changed the edge

Log the moments when separate groups choose a shared objective, accept Eshteross’s assistance or begin relying on one another outside a single mission. Use “proposed” or “active” for the party alliance until the episodes demonstrate durable mutual commitment. Record Eshteross under patronage, not friendship, unless a scene independently establishes personal trust.

Ruidus Rising (C3E24–C3E51)

Spoiler level: arc-level. The party leaves Jrusar, confronts the consequences of its earlier investigations and encounters absent friends, potential allies and new enemies. This is where a simple “Bells Hells versus everyone else” diagram becomes too coarse.

Event that changed the edge

Add a row whenever a departure, memory or new encounter changes who can provide information or support. Keep an absent friend’s personal connection separate from the party’s current operational alliance. If a new contact is useful but untrusted, use “temporary cooperation” and “uncertain” rather than promoting the contact to ally.

Separations and Explorations (C3E52–C3E75)

Spoiler level: arc-level. The Apogee Solstice creates separation effects and gives each character new powers or connections. Treat those developments as relationship events even when no one formally changes sides: a new ability, obligation or supernatural link can alter the balance of trust and power.

Event that changed the edge

Create separate rows for the separation itself, the first contact after separation and any new connection that follows. In the change note, state whether the edge became strained because of distance, strengthened through dependence or remained uncertain because the characters lacked information. Do not merge a character’s new power with a faction allegiance unless the story explicitly connects them.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Ruidus to Aeor (C3E76–C3E98)

Spoiler level: arc-level. Bells Hells undertake an intelligence mission to Ruidus and pursue Ludinus Da’leth and the Ruby Vanguard. The tracker should now include faction-to-character and faction-to-faction edges, not only bonds within the adventuring party.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Event that changed the edge

For every intelligence lead, threat or negotiation, record who supplied the information and who benefited from it. A character can be operationally aligned with Bells Hells while remaining connected to an outside faction. Mark that distinction in the power and visibility fields so a secret source is not mistaken for a public ally.

Downfall (C3E99–C3E101)

Spoiler level: arc-level. Downfall presents an Aeor memory sequence as a separate historical layer. Its relationships should not be placed directly on the present-day Bells Hells graph.

Event that changed the edge

Create a separate “historical layer” value or a second sheet. Use the same character and faction fields, but add a layer column identifying the Aeor-era sequence. This prevents an ancient alliance, betrayal or ideological conflict from being read as a current relationship without an explicit connection to the present story.

The End of an Age (C3E102–C3E121)

Spoiler level: campaign-complete. The final arc includes reconciliation, calls to old allies and heroes, and the decision about Predathos. This is the point at which earlier provisional edges either become durable, break, or are deliberately left unresolved.

Event that changed the edge

When a character calls an old ally, record the earlier relationship type and the new purpose separately. “Reconciled” describes a status change; it does not erase the rivalry or debt that made reconciliation necessary. For the Predathos decision, record ideological alignment and practical cooperation as different edges so agreement on one action is not mistaken for permanent friendship.

Step-by-step workflow for each episode

  1. Choose your spoiler boundary. Before watching or sharing the sheet, set a filter for episode-specific, arc-level or campaign-complete information. Label every new row with that level.
  2. Start with the episode identifier. Enter the campaign and episode number in a consistent form such as C3E02. Add the arc name from the six-arc structure.
  3. Describe one observable event. Write a neutral sentence about an action, statement, revelation or consequence. Avoid combining several scenes into a broad conclusion.
  4. Assign subject and object. The subject initiates or reveals the change; the object receives, responds to or is affected by it. For a faction-wide action, use the faction as the subject rather than guessing which individual speaks for it.
  5. Select the relationship type. Choose alliance, patronage, friendship, romance, rivalry, debt, family or temporary cooperation. If two types apply, make two rows with the same episode and different evidence notes.
  6. Set the new status. Use proposed, active, strained, broken, reconciled, secret or uncertain. “Uncertain” is preferable to a confident label that the scene does not support.
  7. Attach evidence. Link or cite the official episode recap, transcript passage or exact scene, adding a timestamp when available. Fan-wiki summaries can help you find a scene, but consequential claims should be checked against the episode, official recap or transcript.
  8. Rate confidence. “Directly shown” is for an observable action; “explicitly stated” is for a clear declaration; “strongly implied” is for converging clues; “fan interpretation” is for a reading that the text does not settle.
  9. Write the change note. Explain what is different from the previous row: a proposal became active, trust became strained, a secret became public or a temporary bargain ended.
  10. Never delete the previous state. Append the new event so a sort by episode reveals the full trajectory.

Examples of useful relationship records

Party alliance in Jrusar

A row can identify one adventuring group as the subject, Bells Hells as the object, “party alliance” as the type and “proposed” as the initial status. A later row changes the status to “active” when the groups repeatedly choose to continue together. The evidence field should point to the episode scene or recap, while the confidence field distinguishes an explicit agreement from an inference based on repeated cooperation.

Lord Eshteross as patron

Record Eshteross’s missions, resources or authority under “patronage.” Do not collapse those entries into the party’s friendship network. If the characters later disagree with his priorities, add a “strained” patronage row while retaining the earlier active rows.

Orym and Dorian

Use a personal-trust row for Orym and Dorian, separate from the Bells Hells operational-alliance rows. This preserves the way a relationship outside the core party can act as an emotional bridge. Add only what the episode or recap shows, and mark any interpretation of motivation as strongly implied or fan interpretation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Imogen and Laudna

Keep their romantic development in a romance filter rather than treating every intimate conversation as proof of romance. When the campaign establishes the relationship, add a new row with the relevant episode evidence and retain earlier friendship rows. A romance status can be secret, active, strained or reconciled without changing the operational alliance between them.

Ludinus and the Ruby Vanguard

Track Ludinus Da’leth as a subject or object in both character-to-faction and faction-to-faction rows. Record threats, ideological conflict, coercion and intelligence separately. The rivalry filter should show the campaign’s opposing structure without implying that every Ruby Vanguard member has the same personal relationship with every Bell.

How to read the finished relationship map

Find the episode that changed an alliance

Filter the two names, sort by episode, and compare each status with the preceding row. The first row whose change note describes a new commitment, breach, separation or reconciliation is your candidate turning point. Verify it against the scene rather than choosing the episode where a later character summarizes what happened.

Distinguish centrality from importance

A character with many operational links is not automatically the most important relationship in the story. Count neither alliances nor “most important” bonds as objective statistics; no independent source establishes such a ranking. Instead, compare the five axes: reciprocity, stability, visibility, power and story function.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Share safely with other viewers

Duplicate the sheet before revealing later arcs. An episode-specific version should include only rows through the viewer’s current episode. An arc-level version can include all rows in one completed arc. The campaign-complete version can show the final statuses and the historical Downfall layer.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • One line per pair: Replace it with one row per event so reversals and reconciliations remain visible.
  • Mixing romance and friendship: Use separate relationship-type values and cite the scene that supports the romantic label.
  • Treating every fight partner as an ally: Use temporary cooperation when the shared objective is limited.
  • Overwriting a status: Append a new row and explain the change from the previous state.
  • Using a fan interpretation as fact: Set confidence to fan interpretation or uncertain and describe the evidence honestly.
  • Ignoring power differences: Add patron, dependent and adversary values so an authority relationship is not read as peer friendship.
  • Blending Downfall with the present: Keep the Aeor memory sequence in its own historical layer.
  • Leaving out spoilers: Put the spoiler level on every row, not just in the sheet title.
  • Relying on memory for a turning point: Check the official episode description, recap or transcript and capture a timestamp whenever possible.

Further reading and episode access

Critical Role’s official Campaign 3 page provides character descriptions and episode recaps, while the official FAQ records the October 21, 2021 start date and the February 2025 completion after 121 episodes. Use those official materials as the evidence layer for your tracker. You can also watch the Campaign 3 episodes on Beacon, subject to its current availability and access terms.

For a printable or shareable version, include the six arc names, the controlled vocabularies, the spoiler filter and a short legend for confidence levels. The map then remains useful to a first-time viewer without spoiling the campaign for someone who is catching up.
