Track visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini with a repeatable prompt set and dated records of answers, brand mentions and cited sources—not a single blended “AI visibility” score. Separately, use Google Search Console’s generative AI performance report to measure links shown in Google Search’s AI Overviews and AI Mode. These are different observations: a brand named in an answer, a link cited by an answer, a Google Search impression and a referral visit do not measure the same thing.
What does “brand visibility in AI” mean?
Start by deciding which outcome you want to measure. A response can name your brand without citing your site, cite your site without recommending your brand, or mention neither while still influencing a later visit. Keep these measures separate:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Brand mention: The answer text names your brand. Record the context, and whether it presents the brand as a recommendation, an option, a comparison or something else.
- Owned-source citation: The answer links to a URL on your site. This is evidence that the page was cited in that sampled answer, not proof that the brand was discussed positively.
- Answer prominence or recommendation: The position and role the brand has in the response. Define your coding rules before tracking it; there is no shared platform-wide standard for this measure.
- Google Search generative AI impression: A link to your site was shown in a generative AI feature on Google Search. It does not mean your brand appeared in the answer text or that anyone visited.
- Referral visit: A visit recorded in analytics with an AI product as its referrer, where that referrer is available. It captures visits, not all people who may have seen or been influenced by an AI answer.
Do not add these into one score unless you define exactly what the score represents and preserve the underlying counts. There is no universal impression denominator for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini in the sources cited here.

Build a small, stable sampling process first. The aim is a documented record of what each product returned for the same questions under recorded conditions—not a claim to measure every answer a user could receive.
#1 Best Overall
- Choose buyer questions. Include questions from awareness, comparison and purchase stages. Use wording your customers actually use, including queries that do not name your brand.
- Fix the prompt set. Save each prompt exactly as run. Avoid quietly rewriting prompts between periods; if you change them, mark a new series or record the change.
- Record the conditions. For each run, note date, platform, visible product mode, language, location, and whether search grounding or personalization was enabled when observable. Record the model or version if the product shows it.
- Run prompts separately on each platform. Keep a separate observation for each prompt, platform and run. Do not assume a response from one product represents the others.
- Capture the answer and citations. Save the full response or a durable excerpt, whether your brand appears, its context, any cited URLs and domains, and competitor mentions. Note errors and missing responses rather than silently dropping them.
- Repeat on a chosen cadence. Choose a schedule your team can sustain, such as weekly or monthly, and use it consistently. A single answer is a snapshot; it is not a trend.
- Keep an audit trail. Log changes to prompts, collection method, product mode or version. Start a new measurement period when a product or method change makes earlier and later observations difficult to compare.
Use a log that preserves the evidence
A spreadsheet or database can use one row per prompt run. Useful fields include:
- Run date and time; platform and visible mode or version
- Prompt ID and exact prompt text
- Language, location and observable search-grounding or personalization settings
- Full answer or saved excerpt, plus a link to the stored capture if applicable
- Brand mentioned: yes/no; context or sentiment using your defined coding rules
- Owned URL cited: yes/no; cited URLs and domains
- Competitor names and answer prominence, if your team has defined how to code them
- Run status, including errors, unavailable responses and exclusions
Keep the original response alongside any labels or scores. That lets another analyst check how a mention, citation or recommendation was classified.
Calculate rates with explicit denominators
For internal reporting, you can define a brand mention rate as valid runs with a brand mention ÷ valid runs, and an owned-source citation rate as valid runs citing an owned URL ÷ valid runs. These are operational definitions for your own sample, not official metrics from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google.
Report the prompt set, platforms and modes, geography, period, number of valid runs, and treatment of errors or missing answers beside each rate. If the prompt mix or collection conditions change, the rate may no longer be comparable to the previous period.
How often does ChatGPT mention my brand?
There is no evidence here for a fixed, universal frequency. The answer can vary with the prompt, product mode, date and other conditions, so the useful answer is the result from your repeated, documented sample—not a claim that ChatGPT always or usually mentions a brand.
Use the same prompt set across repeat runs, report how many valid runs contained a mention, and retain the answer text so the context can be reviewed. If you want to distinguish a passing mention from a recommendation, define that classification before calculating a rate.
How can I see which sources Perplexity cites?
For each recorded response, capture the cited links and domains shown with that answer, and mark whether any link points to an owned URL. Keep the citation list tied to the exact prompt, date and mode; a domain appearing in one response does not establish how often it is cited across all answers.

How do I measure visibility in Gemini?
Use the same sampling logic: a fixed set of relevant prompts, recorded platform conditions, saved answers, and separate mention and owned-citation labels. Report Gemini results on their own rather than treating them as interchangeable with ChatGPT or Perplexity results.
If you compare products, state the modes and conditions sampled. The available evidence does not establish that a single API or monitoring interface reproduces the answers a typical signed-in user sees in a consumer product.
What does Google Search Console measure?
Google provides a first-party generative AI performance report for its own Search features. Google’s announcement, dated June 3, 2026, says the worldwide rollout was complete as of August 31, 2026. The report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search; it is not a tracker for ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini. Google Search Central describes Search Console as the way to measure visibility in Google’s generative AI features. Google Search Central’s announcement and the Search Console Help page explain the report’s scope.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe report’s impressions count how many times links to your site were shown to a user in a generative AI feature on Google Search. It does not count brand mentions in answer text, visits or conversions. Available dimensions include page, country, date and device. Dates use Pacific Time; Search Labs experiments are excluded. Google also notes standard Search performance limitations, including row and date-range restrictions, and that chart and table totals can differ because aggregation differs. Discover has a separate report.
Rank #4
To use it, open the generative AI performance report in Search Console for your property, then review its impressions over time and break them down by page, country or device as needed. Read the report alongside your prompt-log observations, not as a replacement for them.
How should I connect AI visibility to visits and business outcomes?
Use ordinary analytics and referral data to examine sessions that arrive from AI products when a referrer is present. Treat those sessions as an observable subset, not a complete count of people influenced by AI answers: referral information may not be present, and people may visit later through another route.
Keep referral visits distinct from Search Console’s generative AI impressions and from sampled answer mentions or citations. The sources cited here do not establish a universal attribution method that connects an AI answer to a later conversion across platforms.
What can code automate—and what can it honestly claim?
Code can help organize a repeatable log, calculate rates from saved observations, and flag missing fields or changed prompts. It cannot turn a set of sampled responses into a complete count of platform-wide visibility. An API-generated response should be labeled as an API observation, not as an exact reproduction of what a typical user sees in a consumer interface, unless that equivalence has been tested and documented.
Best Value
The current sources cited here do not verify API endpoints, terms, quotas or parity with the consumer-facing ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini products. For that reason, this workflow does not present runnable provider-specific code or claim that an API-based result is equivalent to a consumer-product sample. Before automating collection, verify the relevant provider’s current official API documentation and usage terms, and preserve platform, model or version, prompt and run date with each result.
What should teams change based on the findings?
Use the records to identify which questions produce useful or inaccurate descriptions, which owned pages are cited, and where the brand is absent from the particular sample. Treat those observations as evidence for reviewing content and technical accessibility, not as proof of a hidden ranking factor.
Google says its generative AI Search features rely on core Search ranking and quality systems, and that existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant. Its guidance emphasizes useful, original, people-first content and crawlable technical foundations; it says no special schema.org markup is required for generative AI Search. Google Search Central also states: “For Google Search, you can ignore tactics like ‘chunking’ content, creating unnecessary AI text files (like llms.txt), or pursuing inauthentic mentions.” See Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI features on Google Search. Google cautions that third-party tools do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems, so a vendor score should not be represented as an official Google measure.
