For a self-custody wallet, the recovery phrase can restore access—and anyone who obtains it may be able to control the associated accounts. Keep it private and offline, maintain a backup you can actually recover from, and treat every request to reveal a phrase or approve a transaction with care.
Know what your wallet recovery credentials do
Ethereum.org describes a recovery phrase as the wallet’s “master key”: anyone who gets it can access the accounts it controls. Its Ethereum security and scam prevention guidance says: “No legitimate service, support agent, or website will ever ask you for these.” Do not share the phrase with anyone claiming to be support, and do not enter it into a site or form reached through an unsolicited message.

A wallet’s app password and its recovery phrase are not necessarily interchangeable. In MetaMask’s phrase-based setup, for example, the password unlocks the app on that device, while the phrase restores the wallet. MetaMask Support advises writing the phrase down, checking spelling and word order, and never giving it to someone claiming to provide support. Other wallets may use different recovery methods, so check the official documentation for yours.
Make a backup that is private and recoverable
A backup has to solve two problems at once: it must survive the loss or failure of a device, and it must stay out of other people’s hands. Bitcoin.org puts the first part simply: “Stored in a safe place, a backup of your wallet can protect you against computer failures and many human mistakes.” Its Securing your wallet guidance also cautions that some wallets manage keys behind the scenes, so copying only visible keys may not capture everything needed to restore access.

Record and verify the recovery information
- Follow the wallet’s official backup procedure; do not assume that every wallet uses a recovery phrase or handles backups the same way.
- If your wallet provides a phrase, copy every word in the exact order and check each word against the wallet’s display before storing it.
- Learn whether the wallet uses one phrase for current and future addresses or has additional account-specific recovery steps. Bitcoin.org notes that deterministic wallets may use one phrase for past and future addresses, but says backup needs depend on the wallet.
Choose storage for your risks
Keep the recovery phrase offline rather than photographing it, emailing it to yourself or saving it unencrypted in cloud storage. Consider whether one secure physical copy is enough for your circumstances or whether carefully chosen redundancy would reduce the risk of loss. Bitcoin.org recommends considering multiple secure physical locations and durable media; it does not prescribe a universal number of copies or one material. Account for theft, fire, water damage, accidental discovery and the possibility that you may no longer be able to reach a storage location.
Choose custody separately from connectivity
Self-custody versus third-party custody is about who controls the keys. Hot versus cold storage is about internet connectivity. These are separate choices: a person can control their own keys in a connected wallet, while a professional custodian may control keys for customers. Investor.gov’s Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors explains the custody distinction and recommends weighing convenience, security, costs and comfort with setup and maintenance.

| Choice | What it means | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Self-custody | You control and protect the keys and recovery method. | You take responsibility for safeguarding credentials and arranging recovery if a device or access method is lost. |
| Third-party custody | A provider controls the keys on your behalf. | You rely on the provider for key control and account access rather than holding sole responsibility. |
| Hot wallet | A wallet connected to the internet, such as a mobile or browser wallet. | Convenient for frequent use, but online exposure can increase opportunities for phishing or device compromise. |
| Cold storage | Keys are kept offline, typically with a physical device. | Can reduce online exposure, but may be less convenient; the device can be lost, damaged or stolen. |
The table describes broad categories, not guarantees. A hardware wallet can reduce online exposure of keys, but it cannot protect a phrase that is exposed or stop you from approving a transaction you do not understand. Bitcoin.org calls hardware wallets “the best balance between very high security and ease of use” in its wallet-security guidance; that is a general characterization, not a promise that a device eliminates risk.

- Keep the wallet app, browser, operating system and device protections current. Get updates and wallet software through official channels.
- Bookmark the wallet’s legitimate website and use the bookmark instead of following wallet links in unsolicited emails, messages or search ads.
- Before signing, inspect the destination address, amount and transaction details on the wallet screen. Confirm that the requested action is the one you intended.
- Review requested token or smart-contract permissions. Ethereum.org advises against unlimited smart-contract spend limits; limit spending approval to what is necessary for the transaction.
- Learn and, where practical, verify the wallet’s recovery process before you depend on it. Use the wallet provider’s official instructions and never test recovery by entering a phrase into an unfamiliar website.
- Where an account offers two-factor authentication, Bitcoin.org recommends authenticator apps or hardware security keys instead of SMS-based codes where possible, because SIM swaps are a recognized threat.
Recognize the common ways wallets are targeted
Attackers often try to get the recovery phrase, redirect a transaction, or persuade a user to install a counterfeit wallet or sign a harmful request. Ethereum.org’s security guidance covers phrase theft, phishing, imitation websites and suspicious email. Bitcoin.org’s Avoid Scams page also discusses counterfeit hardware, QR-code phishing, investment scams and SIM swaps.
- Fake support or recovery services: refuse requests for your recovery phrase or private keys, even if the person claims they can restore funds or fix an account.
- Suspicious links and QR codes: verify the destination before connecting a wallet or signing anything. A QR code is just another way to encode a link or address; it is not inherently trustworthy.
- Urgent giveaways or investment promises: treat pressure to act immediately as a warning sign, especially when a message asks you to send assets or reveal credentials.
- Counterfeit hardware: Bitcoin.org says to buy hardware wallets only from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller, check that packaging is intact on arrival, and generate the seed phrase yourself on first use.
Choose an approach that fits your use
There is no single setup that is right for every user. Consider how often you transact, how comfortable you are maintaining a backup, whether you want sole control of keys, and how you would handle physical loss or an online scam. A connected wallet can suit regular transactions; keeping assets offline can reduce online exposure but adds device and backup responsibilities. Third-party custody shifts key control to a provider, while self-custody leaves the recovery burden with you. Weigh these factors against your own ability to protect and recover access rather than treating “hot,” “cold,” “self-custody” or “custody” as a complete security rating.

If you lose access or lose the recovery phrase
For a self-custody wallet, recovery generally depends on the wallet’s recovery phrase or private keys. Ethereum.org’s wallet FAQ explains that a compatible wallet app may restore a wallet from its phrase; without the phrase or private keys, ethereum.org or another support provider cannot restore it for you. A lost device may be recoverable if you still have the credentials and follow the wallet’s official restoration procedure. If you lose the phrase and have no other usable recovery method, the assets may remain inaccessible.
This differs from an exchange account: an exchange’s support team may be able to help with account access because the exchange provides custody. That does not mean support can reconstruct a self-custody wallet’s missing keys. Never give a purported recovery service your phrase as a way to test whether it can help.
Ethereum.org’s security page was updated February 24, 2026, and its wallet FAQ was updated June 6, 2026. Specific wallet procedures and software labels can change; consult the wallet’s current official documentation before taking recovery or transaction steps.
