Start by identifying whether each assistant sends shoppers to your store or can complete checkout directly, then compare reports only after aligning their scope, dates, checkout path, and attribution model.
What counts as AI-assistant traffic?
An assistant can influence a purchase in at least two distinct ways: it can refer a shopper to your online store, or it can support checkout within its own surface. A referral may leave a recognizable referrer or UTM value in your store’s records. A direct checkout may appear in a commerce platform’s AI-channel sales reporting without producing a conventional visit to your website.

These paths should not be treated as interchangeable. Shopify describes ChatGPT as discovery-focused, with customers completing purchases through the merchant’s online-store checkout, while some other surfaces may support Shopify-powered direct checkout. Shopify’s Agentic sales figure combines referral-based and direct-checkout sales, so it is not simply a count of sales following website referral sessions. See Shopify’s agentic storefront documentation and its guide to managing agentic storefronts.

Which reports show the journey?
| Reporting view | What it can show | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Commerce-platform AI-channel report | AI-channel performance, which may include sales, orders, sessions, and conversion rate. Shopify’s Agentic channel provides per-channel views. | Coverage and definitions are platform-specific. Shopify’s aggregated Agentic sales include both referral-based and direct-checkout sales. |
| Order conversion details | Available order-level context such as session referral, landing page, visit date and time, referral code, and UTM parameters in Shopify. | These fields are available signals, not a guarantee that every assistant will identify itself or that every order has complete referral data. See Shopify’s order conversion summary documentation. |
| Analytics and GA4 BigQuery export | Google Analytics export fields at user, session, and event scope, including source, medium, and campaign fields. | Those scopes represent different points in the journey; retain the scope when reporting. See Google Analytics traffic attribution data documentation. |
| Acquisition reports | Session-based acquisition measures that can be compared with channel and order reporting. | Session definitions and reporting scope can differ, so totals may not match exactly. See Shopify’s acquisition reports documentation. |
How to set up a useful measurement workflow
- Inventory the shopping surfaces. List the AI assistants where your products appear. For each one, establish whether it sends customers to your store, supports direct in-channel checkout, or offers both. Shopify’s documentation covers ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta surfaces; behavior varies by channel.
- Check your commerce platform’s AI-channel reporting. In Shopify, review the Agentic channel’s performance views by AI channel and date range. The documented views include sales, orders, online-store sessions, and online-store conversion rate. Treat the sales figure according to its stated composition rather than assuming it represents only referral visits.
- Preserve raw referral and campaign context. Retain available referrer, landing-page, visit-time, referral-code, and UTM details from order conversion records. Keep the original values alongside any normalized marketing-channel label; do not replace raw source data with a label that makes later reconciliation impossible.
- Keep analytics scope visible. If you use GA4 BigQuery export, distinguish user-scoped first-arrival fields, session-scoped last-click fields, and event-scoped attribution fields. They answer different questions and should not be combined as if they described the same touchpoint.
- Reconcile after aligning definitions. Compare platform channel sessions and sales with first-party sessions, referral paths, UTMs, and order-level conversion details. Align the reporting period, session definition, checkout route, and attribution model. Keep direct or unassigned traffic visible instead of forcing it into an AI-referral category.
Choose and label the attribution model
An attribution model determines how credit is assigned among interactions in a purchase journey. Shopify documents last-non-direct-click, last-click, first-click, any-click, and linear models in its marketing reports documentation. Use the model that fits the question, and label it wherever you publish a result.
#1 Best Overall
- First-click gives credit to the first qualifying interaction, which can help examine discovery.
- Last-click credits the last qualifying interaction before conversion; last-non-direct-click excludes direct traffic from that final credit assignment.
- Linear distributes credit across contributing interactions.
- Any-click gives credit to every contributing click. Because each click may receive credit, the attributed total can exceed the number of orders.
A platform’s channel total and an analytics attribution report may therefore differ even when both are working as defined. Their checkout coverage, scope, session rules, and credit-allocation methods may not match.

Make an AI-shopping report interpretable by recording the measurement choices alongside the figures:
Rank #2
- Reporting period and date range.
- Assistant or AI channel, and whether the figure is per-channel or aggregated.
- Whether the measured outcome is a referral visit, online-store order, direct checkout, or combined sales.
- Data scope: user, session, event, or order.
- Attribution model and any session definition used.
- Whether source values are raw referrer or UTM data, a processed channel grouping, or a platform-reported channel.
- Any direct, unassigned, or otherwise unidentified traffic left outside the AI category.
Privacy settings, cookies, session definitions, and platform reporting scope can also affect comparisons. Treat the reports as complementary views of the journey, not as interchangeable totals or a guaranteed exact reconciliation.
