To compare Wi-Fi speeds fairly, test each device in the same place, with the same speed-test service and server, one device at a time. Repeat the tests, and compare them with a capable computer connected to your router by Ethernet. That wired result helps separate the broadband connection reaching your router from the wireless connection to a particular device.
Set up a fair speed comparison
- Use the same test and server. Choose one reputable speed-test service for every device. If it allows server selection, keep the same server selected; distance and server load can affect results. Google notes that its own tests may measure different paths, such as a device to a server or a Wi-Fi point to Google’s servers, so results from unlike tests are not directly comparable. Google’s Nest and Wifi help describes its product’s speed test.
- Keep the location consistent. Test one device at a time in the same place, ideally near the router for a best-case comparison. Record whether each test uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet, along with the device, location, time, selected server, download speed, upload speed and latency. Ofcom recommends testing more than once because speeds can vary by day and time. Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi guidance includes advice on testing and troubleshooting.
- Reduce competing network activity. For a clean comparison, close apps using network resources and temporarily pause active downloads, updates or streams on other devices. Household traffic can affect a result; this is a temporary diagnostic step, not a reason to keep household devices disconnected. TP-Link’s wired and wireless speed-test instructions also recommend consistent test conditions and closing apps that use the network.
- Repeat the measurements. Run each test again, and test at another time if the result matters. A single reading is only a snapshot, not a promise of constant performance.
- Get a wired baseline if possible. Connect a capable computer directly to the router by Ethernet and run the same kind of test. Check that the computer has an Ethernet port or a compatible adapter, and that the cable can support the service speed. The cable provides a comparison point; it does not increase Wi-Fi speed.
Why different devices report different Wi-Fi speeds
Identical internet plans and routers do not guarantee identical results on every phone, laptop or tablet. Device network capabilities differ, and the signal each device receives depends on its distance from the router, walls and other obstacles, interference, and network activity. Test-server distance and current load can also change a reading. Ofcom puts the distinction plainly: “A slow Wi-Fi test does not always mean there is a fault with your broadband line.” Ofcom’s consumer guide discusses these factors.

Compare like with like: the same device position, connection type, time window, server and household activity. Download speed measures receiving data; upload speed is relevant to tasks such as video calls and sending large files; latency (often shown as ping) indicates delay and matters for responsive live applications. A device-to-server test and a router-to-server test may follow different paths, so their numbers should not be treated as measurements of one unchanging property.

Every device is slow, including over Ethernet
If repeated tests show low speeds on multiple devices, including a wired computer, check whether your internet provider reports an issue. If the problem persists, contact the provider about a possible service-line fault. A test alone cannot establish the cause.

Ethernet is fast, but one Wi-Fi device is slow
This pattern points attention toward the wireless path or that client rather than proving a broadband-line problem. Restart the device, close unused apps and check for updates. Then compare it with another device in the same position and consider the client’s Wi-Fi capability, distance, obstacles, interference and competing traffic.
Wi-Fi is slow only in certain rooms
Try moving the router to a more open, central and elevated position with fewer obstacles. Temporarily pausing active transfers on other devices can help establish whether network activity is contributing. If coverage remains weak in a larger home, mesh equipment may help, but placement and provider compatibility matter; Ofcom cautions that too many mesh units can make problems worse. Check support for your service and equipment before buying.

The result changes between tests
Variation can come from time of day, active devices, test-server distance or load, and the location of the client. NETGEAR explains these sources of variation in its speed-test guidance. Repeat the comparison under consistent conditions rather than relying on one unusually high or low reading.

- Device and whether it used Wi-Fi or Ethernet
- Room or test position relative to the router
- Test service and selected server, if shown
- Time of each test and whether other devices were active
- Download, upload and latency results
Keeping these details together makes it easier to tell a one-off fluctuation from a consistent difference between a device, a room and the wired connection.
