Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Start with the Kindle you already own: open a book, tap the top of the screen, and use the Aa or Page Display controls to make the text and page layout more comfortable. Then adjust how you hold or prop up the device only if you still miss a part of reading print, such as turning pages or resting a book in your hands.
Make the page easier to read with built-in settings
Change one setting at a time, read a few pages, and keep the combination that feels right to you. Kindle options differ by device, software, and book, so you may not see every control described here. Amazon’s text-display guidance lists options including fonts, boldness, spacing, margins, alignment, orientation, backgrounds, and themes.

- Open the reading controls. While a book is open, tap near the top of the screen, then select Aa or Page Display, depending on the device.
- Increase the text size. Raise it until the words are easy to follow. If the lines begin to feel too short or the page too crowded, try a slightly smaller size or adjust the margins.
- Try a font and boldness level. Choose a clear font from the available options. If the letters still look faint, test a modest increase in boldness where that control is offered. There is no single setting established as best for every reader.
- Shape the page. Adjust line spacing and margins to change how dense the page feels. Wider margins or more space between lines can make a page feel airier; tighter settings fit more text on screen.
- Compare alignment and appearance. Try left-aligned and justified text, and test any available background or theme options. Keep the combination that is easiest for you to read without losing the page-like look you prefer.
Amazon says device-level font-size adjustment is supported on Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and higher, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft. On supported devices, changing the device text size may also affect menus and other interface text. For other models, adjust book text through the reading toolbar; Amazon also describes pinch adjustment as an option. Check the instructions for your Kindle rather than assuming the same controls appear everywhere.
Keep the parts of print you enjoy
Reading comfort and the feel of a physical book are related, but they are not the same problem. Text and layout settings change what you see; a case, grip, or stand changes how you hold the device. A page-like background, familiar font, book-style cover, or preferred one-handed grip may preserve parts of your routine. No Kindle setting recreates paper texture, weight, or every tactile detail of a printed book.

- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
A practical sequence is to tune the screen first, then change your holding position, and consider buying an accessory only if a specific annoyance remains. That keeps a purchase from becoming a substitute for settings that are already available.
Check whether the book allows the changes
If the font or layout controls seem to have little effect, the book’s format may be the reason. Amazon distinguishes reflowable books, which can adapt to selected text and layout settings, from fixed-layout content that preserves a designed page. Print replicas, manga, comics, and some textbooks may use fixed layouts, so they may not offer the same customization.

Consider a stand or remote only for a handling problem
If you want to rest the Kindle on a pillow or stand, or turn pages without reaching for the screen, a stand and compatible remote page turner are optional possibilities. Reader discussions describe people using these accessories, including for bed reading, but those anecdotes are not product tests or evidence of an ergonomic or health benefit. See the individual discussions on page turners and reading position and Kindle accessories and stands.
- Check that the remote is compatible with your specific Kindle and case before buying; compatibility is not universal.
- Make sure a clip-on accessory does not cover the screen or obstruct controls you need.
- For a stand or stand case, verify fit and the orientation you plan to use.
- If your main difficulty is seeing the words, revisit the built-in display controls; a remote changes page-turning, not the book’s text format.
If you read in a Kindle app instead
Kindle reading apps have their own display controls, and their menus should not be assumed to match the controls on an e-reader. Amazon documents app-specific options in its accessible reading options for Kindle apps. Use the instructions for the particular app and device you read on.
