To test your internet speed in Windows 11, connect to the network you want to check, open a browser, go to Speedtest.net, and start the test. It reports download speed, upload speed, and ping. For a result you can use, reduce other network activity and repeat the test under similar conditions; one low reading alone does not show whether your internet provider or your Wi-Fi is responsible.
Run a speed test in your browser

Connect your Windows 11 PC to the network you want to measure. To compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection, connect the PC to your router with Ethernet first, if both devices have Ethernet ports and you have a suitable cable.

Before comparing readings, close apps using the internet and, if practical, pause other devices’ heavy network use. Google Fiber recommends reducing network interference and using Ethernet for a wired measurement. Google Fiber’s Speedtest guidance notes that browser tests may not accurately represent connections above 3 Gbps; this caveat concerns very high-speed service, not ordinary home plans.

Repeat the test under similar conditions. Record whether each run used Wi-Fi or Ethernet, the room or location, the time, and any visible test server. Microsoft recommends taking a baseline and repeating tests when checking Wi-Fi performance or evaluating changes. Microsoft’s home-layout guidance discusses baseline and repeat testing.

Ping, also called latency, is response time measured in milliseconds. Lower response time generally means less delay in interactive tasks. Ookla describes ping in terms of response time or lag. See Ookla’s explanation of connection quality.

A speed test measures the connection between your device and the selected test server at that moment. It is a snapshot, not a guarantee that every website or app will perform identically. Results can change with network activity, test conditions, and the connection between your PC and router.
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet to narrow down a slowdown
If you can connect the PC to the router by Ethernet, run one test over Wi-Fi and another over Ethernet while keeping other conditions as similar as possible. Ethernet is an optional comparison, not a requirement to run the test, and a cable does not increase the speed included in your internet plan. Microsoft recommends checking cabling and trying another cable when diagnosing a possible Ethernet cable fault. Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance covers cable checks.

If Ethernet results are consistently better than Wi-Fi, the wireless link or its conditions may be limiting performance. If both are similarly slow, that still does not by itself identify the cause: compare another device on the same network, check for heavy background activity, and repeat the tests before drawing a conclusion. Microsoft suggests checking signal strength, background network use, and another device when investigating slow Wi-Fi. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps provide further checks.

Account for Wi-Fi location and band
Wi-Fi readings can vary from room to room because of distance, obstacles, the wireless band, and competing traffic. Microsoft describes general tradeoffs: 2.4 GHz typically reaches farther and penetrates obstacles better, while 5 GHz generally supports faster throughput. 6 GHz can offer strong performance near the router when both the router and client support Wi-Fi 6E. These are broad characteristics, not a promised speed for a particular home or device. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance explains the tradeoffs.

When testing in more than one place, keep a note of the room and, if known, the Wi-Fi band. A reading in a distant room should not be treated as a direct comparison with an Ethernet test beside the router unless you account for those different conditions.
Use Windows tools for diagnosis, not throughput testing
Windows 11’s network settings show connection status and properties, but they do not measure internet download or upload throughput. For connection problems, use the Get Help network troubleshooter and follow Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance. Microsoft’s network settings overview describes connection information and settings.
For Wi-Fi diagnostics, an elevated Command Prompt can generate a wireless report with netsh wlan show wlanreport. The report contains recent Wi-Fi session and event information; it is not a speed test and does not report download or upload throughput. Microsoft’s wireless network report instructions explain how to use it.

For each run, note the connection type, location, Wi-Fi band if known, time, other household network activity, test service or server if shown, and the separate download, upload, and ping readings. Change one condition at a time where practical—for example, compare Wi-Fi and Ethernet from the same room and close together in time. That makes it easier to see whether the difference tracks with the wireless connection, location, or changing network activity.
