The right internet speed depends on what your household does at the same time. Start with the most demanding simultaneous activity, then allow for other streams, calls, downloads, and users. Download speed matters for receiving video; upload speed matters for sending your camera feed and other content. A single app’s recommendation is not a whole-home plan guarantee.
How much download speed does streaming need?
Netflix’s recommendations are per stream: 3 Mbps or higher for 720p, 5 Mbps or higher for 1080p, and 15 Mbps or higher for 4K. These are stable-connection recommendations for Netflix playback, not totals for a household with multiple active devices. Netflix notes that several factors can affect streaming quality. | Netflix video quality | Recommended connection per stream |
|---|---|
| 720p | 3 Mbps or higher |
| 1080p | 5 Mbps or higher |
| 4K | 15 Mbps or higher |
For example, two simultaneous 4K Netflix streams each call for 15 Mbps or higher under Netflix’s guidance, before accounting for calls, downloads, or other household use. Other streaming services may set different requirements.
How much speed do video calls need?
Video calls use both directions: download receives other participants’ video, while upload sends your camera and microphone data. Zoom’s bandwidth examples vary by call type and resolution; Zoom describes its figures as a general guide rather than a guarantee for every connection. Zoom’s bandwidth guidance
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Zoom call example | Upload | Download |
|---|---|---|
| One-to-one, 720p | 1.2 Mbps | 1.2 Mbps |
| One-to-one, 1080p | 3.8 Mbps | 3.0 Mbps |
| Group meeting, 720p | 2.6 Mbps | 1.8 Mbps |
These are Zoom estimates for the listed call scenarios, not whole-household plan recommendations. If more than one person is on a call, or a call overlaps with uploads, cloud backups, or other video calls, household upload demand can be higher than the figure for one call. The FCC’s 2024 order discusses simultaneous household use and cites Zoom requirements including 2.6–3.8 Mbps upload for group calls and 3.8 Mbps upload for a higher-quality one-to-one call. FCC 24-27
What speed do you need for online gaming?
There is no universal Mbps figure supported here that guarantees good online gaming. The available FCC household guide identifies online gaming among high-demand activities, but its estimates date to 2014 and do not establish a current universal minimum for download speed, upload speed, or latency. - OneMesh Compatible Router - Form a seamless WiFi when work with TP-Link OneMesh WiFi Extenders
- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
Check the current support information for the specific game or platform if it publishes a connection requirement. Also distinguish bandwidth from responsiveness: a speed tier alone does not establish how quickly the connection responds. Stability and latency are separate considerations, and advertised maximum speeds do not guarantee the same performance in every room or at busy times.
How to estimate speed for your household
- List what will be active at once. Count the number and resolution of streams, video calls, large downloads, game sessions, and people using the connection.
- Estimate receiving demand. Use the relevant streaming service’s per-stream recommendation and account for simultaneous streams and other downloads.
- Estimate sending demand separately. Include video-call upload requirements and any other activity sending files or backups. Do not choose a plan based on download speed alone if video calls matter.
- Compare the total with both plan speeds. Check the advertised download and upload speeds, and leave room for activity beyond the examples above. Application requirements do not add up to a guarantee of actual household performance.
- Investigate connection quality if performance still disappoints. A speed test or advertised plan maximum does not prove that every device, room, or time of day will perform identically. Consider stability, latency, and where the problem occurs separately from the bandwidth estimate.
The FCC’s 2014 guide distinguishes one high-demand activity from multiple high-demand activities and cautions that network capacity may need to exceed application estimates to avoid buffering, packet loss, and delay. Its figures are historical context, not current minimums. FCC 14-113

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
How to interpret broadband benchmarks
The FCC’s 2023 notice proposed a fixed-broadband benchmark of 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload. That is policy context—not a minimum for an individual app or a personalized recommendation for every home. The same FCC notice cites a Consortium for School Networking recommendation of 12 Mbps upload per student, an education connectivity benchmark rather than a general household video-call minimum.
