How to Test Your Balance at Home and Track Progress

A cautious home balance check starts beside a sturdy support. Learn the distinct NHS and CDC test approaches, safe setup, and how to keep a useful progress log.

You can check your balance at home with a timed one-leg stand beside a sturdy chair or counter, but treat the result as a snapshot—not a diagnosis. For a repeatable record, use the same test and conditions each time, and stop if you feel unsafe. The NHS inform one-leg check and CDC’s four-stage test serve different purposes and use different timings, so their results should not be combined.

Choose the right kind of home balance check

There are two useful approaches, but they are not interchangeable:

Approach What you do Timing and purpose Who it is for
NHS inform one-leg stand Stand on one leg, using a nearby support as needed. The guide uses a 30-second hold to help choose an exercise level. General exercise guidance; it is not presented as a medical diagnosis. NHS inform
CDC STEADI 4-Stage Balance Test Progress through side-by-side, semi-tandem, tandem and one-foot stances. Attempt each stance for 10 seconds as part of a structured fall-risk screening protocol. A clinical protocol used with older adults. Its interpretation is not a universal fitness benchmark. CDC STEADI (2017)

If you simply want a cautious home check, the one-leg stand is straightforward. Use the CDC sequence only if you understand it as a separate, structured protocol; do not treat the scores from one method as equivalent to the other.

Set up safely before you start

  • Choose a clear, uncluttered area beside a fixed counter or a sturdy chair that cannot slide. Stay close enough to touch it. A wall or stable chair nearby is recommended for balance exercises. NHS balance exercises
  • Wear comfortable, flat shoes. Do not exercise when you are unwell. If you have been inactive and this is your first attempt, consider asking another person to be nearby. NHS inform
  • Keep any support you need within reach. A clinical protocol’s instruction not to use an assistive device is not a reason to remove a support during an unsupervised home check.
  • Do not try an unsupported or harder position if it feels unsafe. If you are worried about your balance or mobility, have fallen, or have a condition affecting balance, seek advice from a clinician. NHS falls guidance

How to do a one-leg stand at home

  1. Stand beside the fixed counter or sturdy chair, with the support close enough to grasp.
  2. Begin with support available. Lift one foot and balance on the other; hold the support if needed.
  3. Only let go if you feel confident and safe. Do not force yourself to continue unsupported.
  4. If you are following the NHS inform exercise-level check, use its 30-second hold as the guide’s way to choose an exercise level—not as a diagnosis or a general pass/fail standard.
  5. Stop if you feel unsafe, need to grab the support, or cannot maintain the position. Record what happened rather than trying to maximize the time.

The NHS inform check is a single-leg stand. Its purpose differs from the CDC test, which uses four progressively harder positions.

How the CDC four-stage test differs

CDC STEADI’s 4-Stage Balance Test has a defined sequence. In its clinical protocol, the person keeps their eyes open and attempts each stance for 10 seconds, stopping the progression if a stance cannot be held. A stopwatch is listed as equipment; a phone timer or watch may be a practical alternative for a home record, but the protocol is intended for clinical screening. CDC STEADI protocol

  1. Side-by-side: Stand with feet together.
  2. Semi-tandem: Place the instep of one foot so it touches the big toe of the other foot.
  3. Tandem: Place one foot directly in front of the other, heel to toe.
  4. One-foot stand: Stand on one foot.

Attempt each position for up to 10 seconds. The CDC protocol says to stop if a stance cannot be maintained for that duration. In that older-adult screening context, inability to hold tandem stance for at least 10 seconds signals increased fall risk; it is not a diagnosis and should not be used as a universal target for everyone. The protocol’s no-assistive-device condition belongs to clinical assessment, not to an unsupervised home test where you need support to stay safe.

Record results so you can compare like with like

Use the same test and similar conditions at each check. The following fields make a practical log; they are not a validated scoring system:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Date and the name of the test or stance.
  • Which side or foot you tested.
  • Seconds held.
  • Whether you used a handhold.
  • Whether you touched a foot down, stepped, grabbed support or were interrupted.

Do not compare an NHS inform 30-second exercise-level check directly with the CDC’s 10-second stages: the protocols have different purposes. The cited guidance provides timed protocols, but does not establish a validated home retest schedule or a minimum meaningful improvement. Avoid turning a balance exercise into a daily maximum-time challenge.

Build balance safely between checks

For exercise rather than testing, the NHS gives a one-leg stand example: hold for 5 to 10 seconds and do three repetitions on each side. It advises building repetitions gradually and exercising near a wall or stable chair; its guidance recommends balance exercises at least twice weekly. These are exercise suggestions, not requirements to test your maximum standing time every day. NHS balance exercises

CDC fall-prevention guidance also recommends strength and balance activities and discussing personal fall-prevention methods with a healthcare provider. In its STEADI guidance, older adults who cannot maintain tandem stance for at least 10 seconds may be considered for physical therapy or an evidence-based fall-prevention program such as Tai Chi. Availability and suitability depend on the person and local services. CDC fall-prevention guidance

When to ask for professional advice

Do not rely on a home score to decide whether a fall or balance problem needs attention. Contact a clinician if you have concerns about balance or mobility, have had a fall, or have a condition affecting your balance. NHS advice specifically recommends seeing a GP if you are worried about balance or mobility or after a fall. NHS falls guidance
