For most demanding games—especially at 1440p or 4K—check the graphics card first. But there is no upgrade that delivers the biggest FPS gain on every PC: the answer depends on your games, settings, target frame rate and current hardware. A CPU can be the more important limit in CPU-heavy games or when you are chasing high frame rates; RAM is worth upgrading when its capacity or configuration is holding the system back.
Start by identifying what limits your games
Do not choose an upgrade from a generic “bottleneck” label. Run the games you actually play at your usual resolution and settings, and observe frame rate, GPU utilization and CPU behavior. These readings are clues, not proof: frame caps, game engines and settings can affect utilization. Then compare benchmarks for the same game, resolution and settings, including average FPS and low-frame consistency when those figures are available.

- If performance is mainly GPU-limited, a compatible graphics card is the most relevant upgrade to investigate.
- If performance is CPU-limited—particularly at high frame rates or in a CPU-heavy game—compare processors that fit your platform.
- If memory capacity or configuration is inadequate, address that specific problem rather than assuming a faster memory generation will fix FPS.
Resolution is useful context, not a guarantee. Higher resolutions and demanding graphics settings often put more work on the GPU, while CPU-heavy workloads and high frame-rate targets can leave the processor as the constraint even at 1440p.

For demanding high-resolution gaming, the GPU is usually the strongest general starting point. In Tom’s Hardware’s test of 16 CPU/GPU combinations, the GPU was the main bottleneck in nearly every game at 4K Ultra. In that older test suite, changing from a Core i7-8700K to the tested Core i9-13900K or Ryzen 7 7800X3D improved performance by 8–9% at 4K Ultra. Those figures describe the tested games and hardware, not the gain to expect from a current purchase.

The graphics-card advantage is less decisive when resolution or settings shift more work to the processor. In the same Tom’s Hardware comparison, the spread between tested CPUs reached 36% with an RTX 4080 at 1440p Ultra rasterization. That is a comparison among those CPUs in that test, not a forecast that every CPU upgrade at 1440p will improve FPS by 36%.
Before buying a GPU, check that it fits your case and that your power supply and other system components can support it. Compare performance for your own games and desired features, such as ray tracing or upscaling; the evidence here does not establish a universally best current card or value pick.

When to prioritize a CPU instead
A processor upgrade can matter when the game is CPU-bound, when you want very high frame rates, or when a fast graphics card is paired with an older CPU. TechSpot’s 2026 Spider-Man 2 Ultimate ray-tracing test found the Ryzen 7 9800X3D averaged 44% faster than the Ryzen 7 5800X3D at 1080p. TechSpot reported that the CPU-relative margin remained at 1440p because the test was already CPU-limited. This is a result for that game, setting and pair of CPUs—not an expected gain from any CPU upgrade.

Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 Gears of War: E-Day test measured the Ryzen 7 9800X3D 42% ahead of the Ryzen 5 7600X at 1080p High. In its selected 1440p testing, the game became GPU-bound around a 130 FPS ceiling. The article noted that most of its other tested Unreal Engine 5 games did not show similarly large CPU scaling.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
Check the whole platform before choosing a processor. Socket, motherboard support, BIOS compatibility and memory compatibility all matter; a CPU change can require a new motherboard and may also require replacing system RAM. Include those costs and compatibility checks in the comparison rather than considering the processor’s price alone.
When a RAM upgrade can improve FPS
RAM is a targeted upgrade, not the default answer to low frame rates. It makes sense to investigate when the installed capacity or configuration is inadequate for the games and other applications you use. First establish that memory is actually a constraint; do not buy a new kit simply because another memory generation is available.

In a Tom’s Hardware comparison published November 20, 2025, the gap between the extreme tested configurations—DDR4-2133 C15 and DDR5-6400 C36—was around 8% in gaming performance. But DDR5-6400 C36 was only 2% faster than DDR4-3200 C15 in that test, with 1–3% gaps between the best DDR4 and DDR5 configurations in several individual games. These results apply to the tested configurations and games. Tom’s Hardware’s conclusion, “Don’t buy DDR5 for gaming,” is an editorial takeaway from those tests, not a rule against upgrading memory when capacity or configuration is a problem.

- Your games and settings: Prefer results from the titles, resolution and graphics settings you actually use.
- Frame-rate behavior: Consider average FPS and low-frame consistency where benchmarks report them, not just one headline number.
- The limiting component: Separate a GPU limit from a CPU or memory problem before spending.
- Total cost: Add any required motherboard, RAM, power-supply or cooler changes.
- Compatibility: Check physical fit, electrical requirements, socket, motherboard and BIOS support, and memory compatibility as applicable.
- Desired features: Account for features such as ray tracing and upscaling, which may change which GPU suits your priorities.
Benchmarks explain tendencies, not your machine’s exact outcome. Without your component list, monitor resolution and refresh rate, games, budget and local availability, no model-specific recommendation or fixed FPS gain is established.
