To test live WebSocket messages, connect to the endpoint, wait until the connection is open, send a harmless message in the format the application expects, and verify the server’s response or another meaningful outcome. A browser tester is convenient for a quick interactive check; a command-line client is more suitable when the handshake requires headers, authentication, an origin, a subprotocol, or client certificates.

For a one-off message exchange, a browser interface may be enough. Choose a CLI when you need documented connection options or want to reproduce a handshake in a script or terminal. Neither choice alone proves the application processed a message.

What to have before connecting
- The exact WebSocket endpoint URL and the required message format, obtained from the endpoint owner.
- Any required authorization, headers, origin, or subprotocol. An incorrect or missing handshake value can prevent the connection even if the URL is right.
- Permission to test the service, and a harmless message that will not trigger unintended production actions.
- For a real application, prefer a secure
wss://endpoint. MDN recommends HTTPS pages and secure WebSocket connections for real applications and warns about insecure WebSockets in mixed-content contexts. MDN: Writing WebSocket client applications
Test a live message in a browser tester
- Enter the endpoint. Paste the exact WebSocket URL into the tester’s URL field. For example, wscat.dev presents a URL field, a connect control, message input, a send control, and history options. wscat.dev
- Connect and wait for the open state. Do not send while the connection is still opening. The browser WebSocket API has four states:
CONNECTING(0),OPEN(1),CLOSING(2), andCLOSED(3). MDN: WebSocket.readyState - Send a representative test message. Match the format the application expects. For a JSON endpoint, send valid JSON with the documented action or route fields; do not assume an arbitrary string exercises the intended handler.
- Inspect incoming messages and connection events. Look for the expected reply, an error, or a close event. WebSockets support bidirectional communication, so messages may arrive from the server independently of a send action. MDN: WebSockets API
- Close the connection when finished. Use the tester’s disconnect control if provided. For the wscat procedure in AWS’s guide, press Ctrl-C to disconnect. AWS API Gateway example

The wscat project documents a command-line client with connection and listen modes, along with options for authentication, headers, origin, subprotocols, and certificates. Consult its documentation for the option syntax that matches your installed version and endpoint. wscat project

Once connected, enter a message in the format expected by the API; AWS’s examples include {"action":"action1"} and {"message":"test response body"}. The documented example assumes authorization is set to NONE; it does not demonstrate an authenticated connection. Check subprotocol requirements
Some endpoints negotiate a WebSocket subprotocol. The client offers protocol names and the server selects one it supports; in the browser API, the selected value is available through WebSocket.protocol. If the application requires a particular protocol, offer a compatible value in the tester. A client that cannot do so may fail to connect even when the endpoint URL is correct. Interpret the result correctly
Connected does not mean the message was handled
A completed connection indicates that the handshake succeeded. In the browser API, send() queues data asynchronously; it does not wait for the server to process the message. The bufferedAmount property reports the number of bytes queued but not yet transmitted. A successful click or send call is therefore not proof of application-level success. Send only when the socket is open
Calling send() while the socket is CONNECTING throws an InvalidStateError. Data sent while it is CLOSING or CLOSED is silently discarded. If a message appears not to go through, check the ready state before investigating the server. MDN: WebSocket.send() MDN: WebSocket.readyState
A browser handshake failure may not test message handling
The WHATWG WebSockets Standard explains that browser handshakes are restricted and redirects are not followed, because doing so could introduce serious security problems in a browser context. A redirect or handshake failure in a browser tester therefore does not, by itself, establish that the endpoint’s message handler is broken. WHATWG WebSockets Standard

Protect credentials and production systems
- Use only endpoints you are authorized to test, and choose a test message that will not perform an unintended action.
- Do not enter credentials, tokens, personal data, or production secrets into a third-party tester unless its data handling has been reviewed.
- Use
wss://for real applications; avoid insecure WebSocket connections in mixed-content contexts. MDN: Writing WebSocket client applications - Confirm application-level success with a response or another meaningful signal, not merely a connection indicator or a sent-message entry.
