Test a page in Google PageSpeed Insights (PSI), separate real-user field data from its controlled Lighthouse result, then use Chrome DevTools to find whether an image is actually delaying the page’s largest contentful paint (LCP). For site-wide patterns, check Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report. This sequence helps distinguish an image problem from slow discovery, network delay, or rendering work.
Start with a page-level speed test
- Open PageSpeed Insights and enter the full URL of the page you want to diagnose.
- Review the field-data section first, if it is available. PSI combines Chrome UX Report (CrUX) data from real users with Lighthouse’s controlled lab audit; the two sections answer different questions. Chrome for Developers explains the distinction.
- Check whether the field results are for the exact URL or for the site’s origin. PSI may lack sufficient URL-level CrUX data and show origin-level data instead. Origin data describes a broader set of pages, so do not treat it as a measurement of the tested URL alone.
- Then read the Lighthouse diagnostics and opportunities. Use these to investigate possible causes, not as a replacement for field experience.
For a useful comparison, note the exact URL and the report’s data scope. If you rerun Lighthouse, keep the test setup as comparable as you can; a controlled run is a snapshot, while field data aggregates real users and their conditions.

Read Core Web Vitals before chasing a score
Core Web Vitals measure loading, interaction responsiveness, and visual stability. Chrome for Developers documents these “good” thresholds; its accessed guidance does not state a publication year for them.
Recommended Free Tools
| Metric | What it indicates | Good | Needs improvement | Poor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LCP | How soon the largest visible content element, often a hero image or heading, appears | Up to 2.5 seconds | More than 2.5 and up to 4 seconds | More than 4 seconds |
| INP | How responsive the page is to user interactions | Up to 200 milliseconds | More than 200 and up to 500 milliseconds | More than 500 milliseconds |
| CLS | How much unexpected layout movement occurs | Up to 0.10 | More than 0.10 and up to 0.25 | More than 0.25 |
These boundaries are documented by Chrome for Developers. A weak score identifies a symptom or area to investigate; it does not establish that image bytes are the cause.
#1 Best Overall
Find out whether an image is slowing the page
When LCP is slow, establish which element Lighthouse identifies as the LCP element. If it is an image, investigate the whole path from discovery to display rather than assuming compression alone will solve it. Chrome DevTools’ Performance Insights includes image- and LCP-specific diagnostics. See Chrome’s Performance Insights guide.
Check image delivery
In Chrome, open the page, open DevTools, and use the Performance panel’s Insights view. Look for “Improve image delivery.” It can identify opportunities such as serving a modern format like AVIF or WebP and delivering an image sized appropriately for its display. Treat these as targeted suggestions: confirm that the suggested asset and dimensions fit the page’s actual design and device needs.

Inspect the LCP breakdown and request discovery
Use “LCP breakdown” to see the reported parts of the LCP timeline, and “LCP request discovery” to understand why the LCP image request may be starting later than expected. A large gap between first contentful paint (FCP) and LCP can indicate that the LCP resource was not available early enough—for example, if JavaScript controls when an image is discovered—or that browser work is delaying rendering. Google’s LCP guidance recommends comparing lab behavior with field data where possible. Read the LCP optimization guidance.
Do not stop at the image file
The visible LCP element may be an image even when the cause of delay lies elsewhere. Check the reported document request latency and rendering or layout insights too. The request may be discovered late, take time to fetch, or arrive while main-thread work delays display. Follow the timing evidence to decide whether to address delivery, discovery, or rendering.

Use Search Console to find site-wide patterns
PSI helps diagnose a particular URL, while Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report groups similar URLs and categorizes them as Poor, Need improvement, or Good for LCP, INP, and CLS. Use the group view to see whether an issue appears to affect a page family, then test representative URLs individually in PSI or Lighthouse. A group-level pattern is not a substitute for inspecting the individual page. Google’s Search Console help explains the Core Web Vitals report.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recheck after making a change
- Repeat the same page-level test after changing an image or its loading behavior.
- Compare the relevant Lighthouse diagnostics under comparable conditions, including the same URL and test setup.
- Check field evidence as it updates rather than expecting a single lab run to establish how all users experience the page.
A screenshot or one controlled test can help show what happened in that run; it cannot prove that every visitor’s experience improved. Field results represent aggregate real-user conditions, and PSI may report origin-level rather than URL-level data.

For a clean capture of how a page looks, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call screenshot API. This is useful for capturing the page, but it is not a substitute for PSI, Lighthouse, DevTools diagnostics, or real-user Core Web Vitals data.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Frequently Asked Questions
Does a faster Lighthouse result mean Core Web Vitals have improved for visitors?
Not by itself. Lighthouse is a controlled lab run; field data reflects aggregated real-user experience. Compare both views as field evidence becomes available.
Why does PageSpeed Insights show origin data instead of data for my URL?
URL-level CrUX data may not be available for the tested page. PSI can display origin-level data, which covers a broader scope and should not be read as a measurement of that URL alone.
