Uploading videos to Hetzner only transfers the files; it does not put them on YouTube. For a continuous YouTube playlist, upload your files to a Hetzner Storage Box or Cloud server, then run a separate playback and encoding process on an always-on host that sends the feed to YouTube Live. A Storage Box can store files, but it is not an interactive server or encoder.
Choose the right Hetzner destination
Hetzner Storage Box and Hetzner Cloud servers are different products. Use a Storage Box when you need remote file storage. Use a Cloud server or another always-on host when you need to run playback and encoding software. A Storage Box supports file access, not interactive SSH sessions on port 22.

- Storage Box: transfer files using SFTP or SCP over port 22. Enable External Reachability in the Hetzner Console for external connections. See Hetzner Storage Box documentation.
- Cloud server: use it as a general-purpose host for the playback and encoding stage, with file transfer configured for that server. Secure SSH and open only the firewall ports your actual setup requires. See Hetzner Cloud server documentation.
Do not assume the Storage Box’s connection settings or capabilities apply to a Cloud server. Check the product-specific Hetzner instructions for your destination before connecting.
Upload the video files and verify them
You can transfer files with a graphical SFTP client such as WinSCP or FileZilla, or from a terminal using SFTP or SCP. Authenticate using a password or a supported SSH key. Before accepting an SSH host fingerprint, verify it through an independent trusted source. Do not put passwords or YouTube stream keys in commands, scripts, or shared screenshots.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- In the Hetzner Console, enable External Reachability if you are connecting to a Storage Box from outside Hetzner’s network.
- Connect to the documented Storage Box hostname using SFTP or SCP on port 22, or use the correct connection details for your Cloud server.
- Upload the video files to the destination directory you intend to use.
- Check that the files appear on the server and that their sizes match the local originals. If playback software is to read the files from a Storage Box, confirm that your chosen host can access that storage using a supported method.
SFTP and SCP move files; they do not create a YouTube broadcast. You still need an encoder and a running playback process.
Set up the playback and encoding stage
YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. For a playlist that repeats continuously, the host must be able to read the source files, play them in the intended sequence, and send the resulting feed to YouTube Live. The official Hetzner and YouTube guidance cited here does not validate a particular player, playlist-loop command, service manager, or server size for a specific resolution. Choose a playback and encoder stack, consult its current primary documentation, and test the exact configuration before relying on it.

Plan for an always-on host and a process that can be monitored and restarted. A continuous broadcast also needs a recovery plan for host restarts, network interruptions, and encoder failures. With self-hosting, you are responsible for security updates, backups, monitoring, and availability; Hetzner’s network or a successful file upload alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
Prepare YouTube Live and connect the encoder
- Check eligibility first. YouTube says livestreaming requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restriction during the past 90 days. Its getting-started guidance states a minimum age of 16. Review the current YouTube livestreaming requirements for the channel you plan to use.
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the stream setup flow.
- Copy the ingest details into your encoder. Use the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: keep it secret, and reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed.
- Use an encrypted ingest protocol where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. Confirm that the selected encoder and host support it.
- Check the YouTube preview before relying on the stream. Confirm that video and audio are present and continuous in Live Control Room, then monitor the live page and the host.
Encoder settings to check
YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Hetzner server can encode a chosen resolution in real time. Test the actual host, source files, and output settings before running continuously. See YouTube’s recommended encoder settings.

If you are considering HLS ingest
YouTube also documents HLS ingest for supported encoders. Its requirements include TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and a rolling ingest playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. That rolling list is part of the HLS transport protocol; it is not the creator’s playlist of prerecorded videos. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. See YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.
Protect content rights and plan for archives
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to every video and audio track in the stream, including music rights. A prerecorded loop remains subject to YouTube’s copyright enforcement, Community Guidelines, and applicable laws. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and Community Guidelines before broadcasting.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a continuous stream that runs longer than that threshold. If you need a retained copy, create a separate recording and archive plan, and check storage capacity and retention yourself.

Troubleshooting a Hetzner-to-YouTube playlist
- The Storage Box connection fails: confirm External Reachability is enabled, use its documented hostname and port 22, and verify the authentication details. Remember that Storage Box access is for files, not an interactive SSH shell.
- The encoder cannot read uploaded files: check the file path and permissions, and verify that the playback host can access the Storage Box or that files have been copied to the host. A successful SFTP upload does not make files automatically available to an encoder.
- YouTube does not receive a feed: confirm the channel is eligible, the correct stream URL and current stream key are configured, and the host can make the required outbound connection. Check the encoder logs and Live Control Room preview.
- The feed appears but playback is not continuous: inspect the playback process and its playlist configuration. Test transitions and the end-of-list behavior with the specific player you chose; the YouTube encoder guidance does not specify how that player should loop source videos.
- The stream stops after a host interruption: check whether the playback and encoder processes restart and whether they reconnect to YouTube. Add monitoring and a tested recovery procedure; continuous operation requires more than uploading files once.
- The video or audio is unstable: compare encoder output settings with YouTube’s recommendations, then test whether the host can sustain the selected workload and network connection. The recommended settings do not establish a server-size requirement.
- The stream key may have leaked: reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old key in your encoder configuration.
Self-hosting or a managed cloud service?
Running playback on a Hetzner Cloud server gives you control over the host and configuration, but you also own deployment, monitoring, updates, and recovery. A managed prerecorded-live service shifts much of the server operation to the provider, while adding a separate service and its terms to evaluate. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams; that listing by itself does not establish current pricing, service terms, or availability in every territory.
