Use Playwright Test to open a modal through its normal trigger, check its accessible identity and keyboard behavior, then compare a screenshot of either the dialog or the full viewport with a reviewed baseline. Visual comparison catches appearance changes; it does not prove that focus, keyboard controls, or dialog semantics work correctly, so test those separately.
Choose the modal states and defects you need to catch
Start by deciding what the test is meant to protect. A useful scope may include the dialog’s initial open state, a validation error, a confirmation state, or a responsive layout. Pick states that represent distinct behavior or meaningful visual changes rather than taking many nearly identical screenshots.

Choose the screenshot boundary to match the contract:
- Dialog element: use a locator screenshot when you care about the panel’s contents, spacing, and styling.
- Viewport or page: use a page screenshot when alignment, clipping, dimmed backdrop, overlay coverage, or the modal’s relationship to the underlying page matters.
Playwright supports screenshots of both pages and locators, with assertions that compare the current rendering against stored expected images. See the Playwright visual comparisons guide and page screenshot assertion reference.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Write a visual test that opens the dialog normally
Use the same user-facing control a person would use. The example below assumes the page has an “Open settings” button and a dialog named “Settings”; adjust those names to match the application. This is an illustrative example, not a test run against a particular app.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('settings dialog matches its expected appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/settings');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Open settings' }).click();
const dialog = page.getByRole('dialog', { name: 'Settings' });
await expect(dialog).toBeVisible();
await expect(dialog).toHaveScreenshot('settings-dialog.png');
});
The first run creates the expected screenshot. Review and commit that baseline with the test. Later runs compare the captured result with it; inspect the actual and diff images before updating the expected file, and accept a new baseline only when the change is intentional. Details and options are in the visual comparisons guide.
Capture the whole viewport when the backdrop is part of the requirement
If a defect could leave the overlay too small, misplaced, or behind page content, assert against the page rather than only the dialog locator:

await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('settings-dialog-page.png');
A page screenshot is broader and may include unrelated content. Prefer the narrowest boundary that still detects the defect you care about.
Check dialog semantics and keyboard behavior separately
A matching image cannot establish that assistive technology can identify the dialog or that keyboard focus behaves correctly. Add focused assertions for the dialog’s accessible role and name, important controls, error messages, and other required text. Playwright’s accessibility snapshot guidance can help compare accessibility-tree structure, but a targeted assertion is often clearer than a brittle snapshot of the entire tree.
For a modal dialog, the WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices Guide says focus moves inside when it opens, remains within the dialog during tab navigation, Escape closes it, and focus ordinarily returns to the invoking element. The pattern also describes exceptions, such as when the invoking element no longer exists or workflow logic moves focus elsewhere. Follow the application’s documented close behavior and the WAI-ARIA modal dialog pattern.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
await expect(dialog).toBeVisible();
await expect(dialog.getByRole('button', { name: 'Save' })).toBeVisible();
// Check the application's expected focus behavior with explicit assertions.
await page.keyboard.press('Tab');
// For example, assert that the next expected control is focused.
await page.keyboard.press('Escape');
await expect(dialog).toBeHidden();
Complete the focus checks for your interface rather than treating a single Tab press as a full focus-containment test. W3C’s H102 technique for native HTML dialog lays out checks for keyboard activation, focus entry, containment, and return. Use it where the app uses the native <dialog> element; custom dialog implementations still need their own verified keyboard and focus behavior.

Screenshot output can vary with the operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other environmental details. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment where possible. Playwright’s guidance is explicit: “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” See the visual comparisons guide.
- Keep the operating system, browser version, viewport, device scale, fonts, and test setup consistent between baseline generation and comparison.
- Control animated, time-based, randomized, remote, or user-specific content that can change between runs.
- Mask or hide only regions whose variation is irrelevant to the requirement. Do not mask the dialog or meaningful content.
- Use a narrow, explained difference tolerance only when unavoidable rendering noise requires it. A broader tolerance can conceal real regressions.
Playwright’s screenshot assertions wait until two consecutive page screenshots match before comparing the final capture with the expected image. That stability check can help with changing renders, but it does not make a changing application state deterministic; stabilize the page and its data as well. See the assertion API reference.

Troubleshoot failures without weakening the test blindly
The dialog locator is not found
Check that the test uses the real trigger, that the page has reached the state where the trigger is available, and that the dialog exposes the expected role and accessible name. If the UI uses different wording or a non-semantic custom element, correct the application or use a selector that reflects the actual contract; do not assume a screenshot assertion can identify a dialog by appearance.
The first screenshot differs from the baseline
Open the actual and diff images and identify the changed region. If the visual change is intentional, review and update the baseline. If not, stabilize the environment, fonts, viewport, device scale, or variable content before considering any tolerance adjustment.

The screenshot changes from run to run
Look for animations, clocks, random values, user-specific content, remote assets, or inconsistent browser and host setup. Control only irrelevant variability; dynamic text or layout that users rely on should remain part of the comparison.

The image passes but the modal still fails accessibility checks
That is expected: visual assertions test rendered appearance, not focus containment, accessible naming, or keyboard operation. Add explicit role/name, focus, close, and focus-return assertions appropriate to the dialog. Use an accessibility-tree snapshot when it gives useful structural coverage, not as a substitute for behavior checks.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot outside a local Playwright test—for example, a one-off capture—ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A direct API call can capture a URL as an image; it is not a replacement for a Playwright baseline test or for modal keyboard and accessibility assertions.
For modal testing, open the app’s ordinary route with the dialog already in the desired state, or use an application URL/state that reliably opens it. This one-call example saves a screenshot of the target URL:
