Preview Stripe customer portal changes safely in a sandbox, from Dashboard invoicing checks to verifying which configuration your application’s portal session uses.

Test customer portal changes in a Stripe sandbox, using a representative sandbox customer to inspect the customer-facing experience. Stripe’s documented Dashboard preview flow is specifically for invoicing management; for other changes, use the sandbox and customer context to exercise each affected portal journey before release.

What the Stripe sandbox lets you check

A Stripe sandbox is an isolated test environment. Stripe says, “Nothing you do in a sandbox affects your live setup.” Its customer-portal guide also notes that customer quick view is unavailable for live-mode customers, so use sandbox customers for this preview workflow. The portal configuration controls what customers can do and see. Depending on your setup, relevant behaviors include subscription plan and quantity changes, prorations or end-of-period downgrades, promotion codes, cancellation timing and reason collection, billing-information changes, payment-method management, invoice history, branding, business details, and redirect behavior. Review only the paths your configuration enables, and test the resulting customer experience rather than treating a successful save as proof that the change works.

Preview invoicing management in the Dashboard

  1. Open or create a Stripe sandbox. Make the portal change in the sandbox rather than live mode.
  2. Choose a representative sandbox customer. Prefer a record whose subscription, invoices, and billing details let you inspect the behavior affected by your change.
  3. Create a new invoice for that customer. Stripe specifies this step for previewing invoicing management.
  4. Open the customer portal. On the customer’s page, use the overflow menu and select Actions > Open customer portal.
  5. Inspect the affected journey. Check the relevant settings in context—for example, whether the customer can reach the intended invoice or make the permitted billing change. For subscription changes, verify the displayed timing and billing consequences, including prorations or scheduled downgrades where applicable.

The Dashboard guide documents this customer-record workflow for invoicing-management preview. It does not say that every portal setting has its own preview button. For other changes, use sandbox customer records to test the affected path and its outcome. Stripe: Configure the customer portal

Check the configuration your application actually uses

Previewing a configuration in the Dashboard is not enough if the application creates portal sessions using a different configuration. Stripe’s portal-session API accepts a customer ID, a return URL, and an optional configuration ID. If your application omits the configuration ID, Stripe uses the default configuration. Confirm that the sandbox session selects the configuration you intend to release, explicitly or through the expected default. Stripe: Create a portal session

Configuration and session objects expose a livemode field. Keep this check in test mode: use sandbox resources for the customer, configuration, and session, and confirm the environment before drawing conclusions from the preview. The configuration reference URL identifies API version 2025-03-31.preview; check the API version used by your integration when applying its details. Stripe: Create a portal configuration

Build a release check around changed behavior

Use a short checklist tied to the change, not a generic screenshot review. A customer without the relevant subscription or invoice may not expose the path you need to test.

  • Customer state: Select sandbox records with the subscription, invoice, or billing details needed to reach the changed feature.
  • Configuration selection: Verify the configuration ID used by the session, or confirm that the default configuration is the intended one.
  • Customer action and result: Complete the affected journey, such as changing a plan or quantity, cancelling, updating a payment method, or viewing invoice history.
  • Billing consequences: Check the displayed timing and outcome under your rules; a downgrade may be scheduled for the end of a billing period rather than applied immediately.
  • Return behavior: Test the session’s return URL and confirm that the customer reaches the expected destination after leaving the portal.
  • Environment: Confirm the preview uses sandbox/test resources and does not rely on a live-mode customer.

Stripe’s configuration and session references describe the available settings and session context, while the Dashboard guide supplies the customer-specific invoicing preview steps. Together, they support testing the configured path end to end in a sandbox before changing the live setup.
