For most subscription products, let customers manage billing through Stripe’s hosted Customer Portal. Enable customer-detail edits and saved-payment-method updates separately, then create a portal session on your server when an authenticated customer chooses Manage billing. If you need a fully custom account page, Stripe also lets you update billing details on an attached PaymentMethod—but those fields are distinct from the Customer’s profile.
Choose between Stripe’s portal and a custom flow
| Option | What it updates | What you control | Identity and access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stripe-hosted Customer Portal | Selected Customer fields and, separately, saved payment methods, depending on enabled features. | Configure portal features and which customer fields customers may edit; Stripe hosts the interface. | Create a short-lived session for the Stripe Customer mapped to the signed-in user. |
| Custom application flow | A custom form can update an attached PaymentMethod’s billing_details; this is not equivalent to editing every Customer field. |
Your application owns the interface and must implement the desired actions. | Enforce that the Customer and PaymentMethod belong to the authenticated user. |
For a typical subscription product, the portal is the simpler default: it is Stripe’s hosted interface for subscription and billing management. A custom flow is appropriate when your product requires a tailored experience or update behavior that the portal configuration does not provide. The comparison above describes implementation responsibilities, not a performance or security benchmark.

Configure the portal’s editable features
Stripe treats Customer profile updates and saved payment-method changes as separate capabilities. In the portal configuration, enable features.customer_update to let customers edit selected Customer fields. Set its allowed_updates list to the fields your billing process actually needs. Documented options include address, email, name, phone, shipping, and tax_id. Billing address (address) and shipping address (shipping) are distinct choices. [Stripe portal configuration]

Enable features.payment_method_update separately if customers should be able to change a saved payment method. Turning on customer-profile edits alone does not enable payment-method changes. Review the current configuration reference and your Stripe account’s API version before implementing API parameters; a preview API-version value shown in an example URL should not be copied into production by default.

- Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
- Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.
Create a portal session when the customer needs it
- Add a Manage billing action. Put it in the authenticated area of your application, where customers can reach their subscription and billing settings.
- Resolve the Stripe Customer on your server. Use your trusted account-to-Customer mapping; do not accept an arbitrary Customer ID supplied by the browser as authority.
- Create a portal session for that Customer. Generate the session server-side when the customer requests billing management, and configure an appropriate return destination in your application.
- Redirect to the session URL. Treat the URL as short-lived, not as a permanent account link. Stripe says: “Create sessions on-demand when customers intend to manage their subscriptions and billing details.” [Stripe Customer Portal Session documentation]
- Test before release. Check the configured portal features and end-to-end session flow with test data and the API version used by your Stripe account.

What changes in a custom payment-method form
Stripe’s PaymentMethod update endpoint accepts billing_details for a PaymentMethod attached to a Customer. Those details belong to the PaymentMethod; they are not a general-purpose instruction to update every field on the Customer object. Stripe describes PaymentMethod billing details as information that may be used or required by particular payment methods. [Stripe PaymentMethod update API]
Rank #2
- Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
- Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
- Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
If you build your own form, validate on the server that the PaymentMethod is attached to the intended Stripe Customer and that this Customer belongs to the signed-in account before applying an update. Implement any separate Customer profile edits explicitly rather than assuming a PaymentMethod billing-details update changes the Customer’s name, email, or address.
Do not confuse billing management with Checkout prefill
Checkout can prefill information for an existing customer in documented circumstances, but it is a checkout convenience—not a persistent billing-management interface. Stripe’s prefill behavior has conditions, including a saved card and compatible allow_redisplay and billing-details values. Do not promise that Checkout will always prefill saved payment or billing information. See Stripe’s existing-customer Checkout guidance.
