Use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() to capture an RTL page and compare it with a reviewed baseline. Make the application’s RTL locale or mode explicit in the test, stabilize the page before capture, and run baseline creation and comparisons in a consistent environment. A screenshot checks rendered appearance; it does not prove that the correct locale, direction, or accessible structure is configured.
Set up an explicit RTL scenario
Use the application’s actual locale or RTL-mode mechanism rather than relying on a browser default. Set the route, locale, viewport, and relevant test data as part of the scenario, then assert that the page has reached its intended state before taking the screenshot. The route below is illustrative: replace ?locale=ar with the locale or fixture mechanism your application uses.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('Arabic landing page renders right to left', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('/?locale=ar');
// Replace this with an assertion that identifies your app's RTL-ready state.
await expect(page.getByRole('main')).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing-rtl.png');
});
Keep separate baselines for states that are meant to look different—for example, the landing page with its navigation closed and open. Name screenshots so the locale and state are apparent during review.

Create and review the baseline
On the first run, Playwright has no reference image to compare and reports the missing baseline. Generate the reference using the team’s normal snapshot workflow, inspect the image, and commit it through version control. Later runs compare the captured page with that stored image.
If an intentional design change should alter the reference, update snapshots with:
npx playwright test --update-snapshots
This command replaces reference images; it does not establish that the UI change is correct. Review the updated screenshots and diffs before accepting them.

Stabilize the page before capture
Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the final capture with the baseline. That can help avoid capturing a render that is still changing, but it does not make application data or state deterministic. Arrange stable test data and state yourself.
- Control the scenario: use a known route, locale, viewport, and test data; wait for a meaningful application-ready condition rather than an arbitrary delay where possible.
- Keep rendering conditions consistent: browser rendering can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Create and compare baselines in the same environment where practical.
- Account for hover: hover styling appears if the pointer is over an element at capture time. Move it away or onto an element without hover styling when hover is not part of the scenario.
- Mask only truly volatile content: screenshot styling can hide dynamic regions, but masking should not conceal behavior or layout that the test is intended to verify.
See the Playwright documentation on visual comparisons and its PageAssertions API for screenshot assertion behavior.
Cover RTL-specific visual risks
Choose checks based on the patterns your product actually uses. An RTL visual suite may need independent screenshots for supported RTL locales and important interactive states, not just one page at one width.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
- Navigation placement and the direction of directional icons or controls.
- Text alignment, form labels, inputs, and validation messages.
- Mixed Arabic or Hebrew text with Latin text, numbers, or punctuation, if those combinations occur in the product.
- Desktop, tablet, and mobile widths that are part of the product’s supported experience.
- Menus, dialogs, or other state changes whose RTL layout should be checked separately.
Pair visual comparisons with ordinary assertions for functional outcomes: for example, verify that a menu opened or that expected text is present. A screenshot can reveal a visual difference, but it does not explain whether an interaction succeeded.

If the requirement includes accessible roles, names, or hierarchy, add an ARIA snapshot assertion for the expected accessibility tree. Playwright’s ARIA snapshot matcher compares the current tree with a template; it complements a screenshot rather than replacing it. See Playwright’s ARIA snapshots documentation.
Tune screenshot diffs only after inspection
Playwright documents threshold as the acceptable perceived color difference per pixel, with a documented default of 0.2. maxDiffPixels limits how many pixels may differ and is unset by default. Start with settings strict enough to surface meaningful changes. If a diff is noisy, inspect it and identify the rendering variation before adjusting tolerances; increasing them just to clear an unexplained failure can hide a regression.

These values and behaviors are described in the visual comparison documentation; verify the settings against the documentation for your installed version.
Choose coverage around risk and maintainability
- Locale and state: select the supported RTL locales and interaction states that deserve independent baselines.
- Viewport: include widths where the layout changes materially, rather than multiplying snapshots without a specific risk to cover.
- Browser and platform: test environments that matter to your product and keep each environment’s baseline process consistent.
- Assertion type: use screenshots for appearance, interaction assertions for behavior, and ARIA snapshots for accessible structure.
- Stability versus sensitivity: mask dynamic regions narrowly and justify pixel tolerances by reviewing actual diffs.
Troubleshoot common failures
The first run reports a missing screenshot
Cause: no baseline exists yet for that test and screenshot name. Fix: generate the reference with your normal snapshot workflow, inspect it, and commit it. Do not treat baseline creation as a passing comparison.
The test fails with a large or unexpected diff
Cause: the locale, page state, viewport, test data, or rendering environment differs from the baseline—or the UI changed. Fix: check those inputs first, inspect the expected and actual images, and update the baseline only for an intentional, reviewed change.

The capture is inconsistent between runs
Cause: changing page state or differing render conditions. The assertion’s consecutive-match wait does not control the application’s data. Fix: make the test data and state repeatable, wait for a meaningful ready condition, and use consistent browser and host conditions where practical.
A hover style appears in the screenshot
Cause: the pointer was over an element with hover styling at capture time. Fix: move the pointer away or onto an element without hover styling unless hover is the state under test.
RTL visuals pass, but direction or semantics are wrong
Cause: a pixel comparison checks appearance, not whether the application selected the intended locale or exposed the right accessible structure. Fix: assert the application’s RTL-ready state and add interaction or ARIA snapshot assertions for requirements that images cannot establish.

If you need a screenshot API rather than a Playwright visual-regression test, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it is not a substitute for Playwright’s stored-baseline comparison. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients.
